It’s Official: P Mac to play at Iowa

Yesssss! I was hoping Patrick would pull the trigger early, and help us land Carton, or other 2019 prime recruits. Go Hawks!

Fantastic news!!

Some really nice quotes from P-Mac in this article.

"...I’m going to work on some of my friends that are pretty good and try to get them to come with me." :D:D

Welcome to Hawkeye nation, as if you weren't already a member .

Patrick committing early gives us a big boost...besides the length and skill set he will bring to the program, he has a big time personality. Would not surprise me if we land one or two more 4 stars in his class as he will be our best recruiter. Need DJ Carton to jump on board next! Exciting times now and on the horizon for Hawkeye hoops!!

I'll be really curious to see if we are put in another situation where we may need to play with the scholarship situation. With how far ahead we've been in recruiting, it seems we've been looking to build relationships with higher rated guys in future years. Could that effort finally pay off and bring more 4*+ players?

Fran has obviously shown he's willing to do that with his kids (and no, this has nothing to do with whether they deserve a scholarship - all about maximizing our chances at winning while playing within the rules). Can you imagine the practices if two of our walk-on players are Connor and Patrick? We'd have two full teams of players that are legitimate B1G contributors going at it pushing each other to be better.

Congrats to Patrick on his decision (and the journey to get here) - I know I'm really looking forward to seeing his career progress.

Any shots at a 5***** player? Does Patrick move up in the rankings?

Fran likes to play 10-11 guys but it makes no sense to try and get 14-15 4* players on the team, people are worried about how the minutes are going to be spread out now. can you imagine how trying to spread the minutes out between 15 potential starters?

not worth the headaches.

Not sure I understand your point.

For one, while Fran has certainly upgraded the talent on this team, this team is far from loaded with 14-15 Top 50 players. Iowa is not Kentucky or Duke.

Second, it's called competition. Usually a good thing for a team who wants to compete at the highest level. If there are scholarships available, you get the best talent (character and academic stuff applies) you can get.

If Patrick can help do that, this is a good thing. And a "headache" I think Fran is willing to deal with.

my point is getting 13-15 4* kids will just lead to players leaving because 4* players want to play not sit, 8-10 4* players will be enough with the extra 3-4 players in the 3* range, will do just fine.

Who cares if kids leave because they are unhappy with their playing time. That happens at every program. What star rankings they have is irrelevant. You have to prove yourself on the court, in practice, etc., every day. Just because a kid is a lowly 3-star player doesn't mean they are satisfied with coming in to be a 4-year bench warmer. They will fight and compete for minutes too, thinking they are under the radar and just as good as some kid who was rated a 4-star in high school.

Again, though, that is irrelevant. You get the best talent you can. Period. Let the competition begin. No program is going to pass on an opportunity to land a Top 25-caliber player because they are afraid of offending 4-star players who might transfer out if they lose PT.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time, I just don't get the premise of your argument.

my thought are its difficult to find that on one team players that are willing to be unselfish at one time, look around at these Elite schools not even they have as many highly rated players on 1 team not even Kentucky,

you ask for the improbable.

Also players transferring may also mean we aren't winning players mostly are willing to stick it out if the team is winning and the future continues to look bright

there are only 5 players on the floor, I can't recall the need to go 3 deep at each position, at one time the NCAA allowed teams to have 15 scholarship players and very few team used all 15, then the NCAA reduced the number to 13.

I read on every year that Fran needs to cut the rotation to 7-8 players and yet every time at this time of the year its the same tiring lets get as many players as we can. my question is which is it having 15 or more players or cutting the rotation to 7-8 player.

Players get hurt. Players graduate. Players go through slumps. Players don't pan out. Players don't carry their classroom responsibilities. Players make mistakes off of the court. Players rethink their commitments.

Get the most talented players you can get. Raise the program to a more visible and familiar point. The talent flow would become a bit easier, potentially.

I'm rich, but if someone offers me more money, I'll take it. If the dollar bills feel offended, hit the road.

I'm not rich.

The more you play against really good players, the better you get. Give me a top PG in the 2019 class, and I will be happy with any other kids that Fran brings in. Getting another PG in the 2020 class would really set us up for some years of competing for the B1G championship.
