It’s official this defense is hands down the worst at Iowa for at least a decade

This game sealed it.

24 points should’ve been enough to win this game.

Can’t decide if the D backs or D line were the worst group for the season as a whole.

Probably a tie but each unit would underperform the other on a game to game basis.
back end was awful
Cook carved their a$$es up all afternoon .
X is a bust
CAstro disappeared this year.
Bad bad secondary

Did we even defend a single pass? Seemed like every incomplete was a drop.
Just posted this exact same thing in another thread.

I was texting friends that we might as well blitz all 11 because every receiver for them was wide open on every pass for literally the whole game.

The only way we stopped them was when they dropped wide open passes. 🤦🏽‍♂️

It’s also weird to me how Phil seemed defensive to questions throughout the year when the defense was questioned. He seemed to question the narrative that they weren’t playing well. He didn’t demand better he defended the poor play. Very strange.
phil’s probably tough on them in person but defends them publicly to keep morale. no way he thinks that secondary passes muster

@HawkeyesCFPorBust_oops welcome back! Now get back over here and finish sucking everyone off.
He’s a Nebber & it sucks that his team beat us that one time this last decade.

1-9 is more than satisfactory for him. And all Nebbers actually.

Think about this, Nebber has more wins against Iowa in the last decade than they have conference titles in the last 25 years.

That’s ridiculous

Obviously Phil’s plan was to keep Cook in the pocket for the most part. But I’ve never seen a game where our 4 d linemen basically didn’t even try to pressure him. We were great against the run but at what point do you look in the mirror defensively and continue to let teams get big 3rd down conversions? 24-14 we had them 3rd and 10 and let Cook sit back all day and convert. Which then lead to the bomb and eventual score. It does no good to stop the run and have teams 3rd and long and play soft cover.

Cook was in the top 2 of all QBs we faced this year. I think if you put him on Ohio St instead of Will Howard, they probably beat Oregon earlier this year.

That’s our other problem. We’ve been able to get away with this kind of D because of how bad the QB play is in the Big Ten. Cook is a little above average QB. But he’s better than anyone else we faced this year which is more of an indictment of the B1G.

We lost by 3 to the #19 team with an exceptional QB and some are acting like the world is ending.
He’s not exceptional. And he’s probably still wearing his jersey because Phil decided to play our d line as only run stoppers.

I agree, but more specifically it’s an indictment of the Big Ten West and the talent level at the QB position. I would suggest Ohio St, Penn St, and Michigan have all had much better QBs than anything we have seen in the west and why we have gotten not just beaten by them but obliterated lately.

Not sure what people are upset about, this is how his defense plays when a team has talent.

When you go up against Big10 west or have cold weather later in the year the defense does very well

Every once and a while the defense shows up against a Michigan or Penn State

And yes this year the defense didn’t shut down every average to bad team like it has in the past.

What’s insane is that Iowa fans seem to believe the only way to win is for the defense to never give up 20something points.

If Iowa is to make the playoffs, they will have to score more than 30 points against that level of competition. Unless it’s an outdoor game and weather is miserable, the elite teams are going to score.

The defense does need some playmakers on DL and in secondary. But i trust Phil a lot more in development than i do anyone on offense

How many times did we blitz??? Seriously it seems like this year we did very little of it. We also haven’t talked about getting LBers in the portal.. gotta imagine that position takes a step back. Schulte is gone and he was a liability out there and X has potential but hasn’t seemed to progress. Get a CB and LBer.
Also did Allen play??? I always expected him to be a great pass rusher out there but didn’t see him much this season.
Lots of question marks and hopefully Phil hits the drawing board tomorrow

I don’t disagree with this at all. I’m of the mind that you may have to win multiple ways, including getting into a “shootout” type of game, which is why I don’t see Iowa ever doing well in the playoff. Not to mention, I don’t ever see Iowa winning the conference again so they won’t get a first round bye which means they will most likely be a higher seed and have to go on the road to play against a good/very good team.

Look at the lesser teams in this years playoff, I’m not sure we could outscore SMU or Indiana and those teams honestly didn’t belong.

Indiana had a good team but the ND DL just destroyed them and their QB never recovered

they say defense wins championships and it should be Defense Lines win championships

Iowas best defenses over the year had that guy or two who could make the plays in backfield

How in hell did Indiana become an offensive juggernaut? Granted they got handled by any rated team they faced this year. But if they can do it. So can Iowa.

Cignetti is a damn good coach. Don’t forget that they hung 55 on Nebraska when we could only put up 13. We didn’t want any part of Indiana this year. Our defense wasn’t up to par and our offense was not good especially if the team stacked the box, even with KJ.

They have had far better WRs than us for awhile now….i think the stars aligned for them this season. It will be interesting to see if they can sustain it. A few years back their 4th string WR would have seriously been the #1 WR at Iowa.

But to answer your question - I agree, if they can figured it out offensively, no reason we can’t…

We lost our sneaky athletic NFL corners is what happened. DLee got abused, that jump ball defense was awful, barely left the ground. All Nkwampa did was potentially target a guy.
