People are speculating it may have been Jack and the fact we haven't heard anything about the driver in the two weeks since the accident happened leads one to reasonably conclude that there is someone with sway/power behind the scenes delaying the release of that information.

Additionally, if I was Jack (or Fran) and people were speculating about something this serious that I wasn't involved with I would be squashing those rumors immediately. It's been radio silence on that front.

The driver being a minor is a reasonable circumstance that could keep the information from being released, especially if there was no aggravating delinquent activity. The driver's name may never officially be released regardless of who the driver's parents are and that doesn't mean there is a conspiracy.

Let's be real, even though us dorks on a message board don't know who was driving (nor do we need to), the entire HS community knows through their own social media, as would anyone who would try to maliciously use the information for whatever reason. good point; a reminder for all of us (whether walking or jogging) to make sure when walking/jogging past the stopped car to make sure the next lane doesn't have a car coming our way

As a driver, one time I was in the far right lane at an intersection, at a red light, with a large SUV to my left. The light changed to green and since I couldn't see to my left and the SUV didn't move, I didn't move; a split second later a car sped thru the intersection, running the red light.

As a runner myself, there is no chance I’d cross at that spot, car stopped on one lane or not, without being triple certain another car wasn’t coming in that second lane that didn’t see me.

And as others have said, if you were in the left lane and saw a car in the right lane stopped or slowing, it would be very easy to assume they were making a right hand turn into that development. I can 100% see how easy it would be to hit someone in this scenario. I find myself asking if the runner was wearing headphones and distracted himself or if they were worn could gave caused him to be unaware of another car coming.

Lastly, in my opinion I think one would have cause to suggest the city themselves is at fault here for placing the crosswalk in this spot. Not at an intersection. Not lighted. Not warned with a flashing sign. Crossing a road where almost everyone on it is driving 35+. In addition the obvious 2 lanes of traffic going the same way. I bet a good attorney will be able to point to other municipalities that have forbidden these sorts of crosswalks for this exact reason. I know in my area, a prime running trail that crosses a busy 2 lane road at a non intersection is controlled with a light and a crosswalk that senses runners or bikers at the area and triggers a stop light for oncoming traffic.

This is simply tragic for all involved and I feel for everyone. This is on the city in my opinion. Not the runner or the driver. Laws notwithstanding. It is a horrible design that was simply waiting for the stars to cross wrongly and end up tragically.

Definitely a dangerous spot that the city needs to improve. Sad that it took someone dying to make this clear. We will probably never know exactly what contributed to the tragedy. If the young driver was driving carelessly, I hope he learned from this and has expressed his sincere apology to the family. Sometimes concerns for legal and civil issues stand in the way of doing the right thing...

Now, a plausible explanation for what happened is that the offending vehicle was shielded by the other car, or worse, was behind the other car and changed lanes to pass him and struck the pedestrian. These are the 2 most likely scenarios. If the offending vehicle changed lanes and was speeding, charges/damages could be much more significant. People can be charged with vehicular manslaughter under similar circumstances.

I just hope the driver was not distracted by his phone when the collision occurred. That's the first thing I think of when accidents like this happen (looking down at your phone instead of paying attention to the road).

I know of a gal who TWICE has rear ended someone, causing the car she hit to plow into the car in front. Both times, 3 cars were significantly damaged. No one ever said/admitted if she was on her phone or not. Hopefully she's learned her lesson!

I agree. This is a situation where, no matter the name of the minor, they would not be named. People are making too much of this.

At some point I’d expect a statement, carefully worded through attorneys, to come from the family. I think that’s the best anyone can hope for in that regard.

As a father of kids his age, and myself being close to the age of the victim, I can’t imagine the grief and devastation they both are experiencing. As a father you’d want nothing more than to put yourself in your sons place and shield him from this tragedy. But it won’t work like that. I hope Jack has the resilience to see this was an accident and not blame himself because then two lives have been lost. So heartbreaking.

It is normal for ICPD to not release the name of a minor involved in a traffic accident unless criminal charges are filed. And even then the names are rarely released.

This breaks both ways. At times celebrities are treated more aggressively to prove that a prosecutor is not star struck, and for purposes of self promotion. I'd say the Alec Baldwin charging was an example of this.
There is no confirmation as to who the driver was. If indeed it was then JM is not a celebrity, and his parents do not wield the power to influence an investigation or prosecutorial decision like Terry Branstad did.

yes this was in HS I did have a farmer licenses to drive farm equipment on the roadways. which is really wanted or needed. once I got my permit my 1st car was a 1965 Mustang. it got me from point A to point B just fine.

Karnack, back when you were Herbie or Kilroy you posted some difficult things that have happened to you in your life, and I have always tried to approach you with empathy as a result. But you make the message board toxic by attacking incessantly. You treat any criticism of the Hawkeyes as a personal attack on you. You don't seem to have a filter for sarcasm or ordinary banter.
