Jack McCaffery: Officially Not Considering Iowa

This one's jarring isn't it? I mean, being up front about not even considering Iowa...

Like it's proof of the existence of a kind of fundamental animosity between the McCaffery family and us, the Iowa fans.

Doesn't feel like a healthy relationship going forward and I can't help but think the end is close. Not that I couldn't be wrong on all this and he just personally wants to leave Iowa City that badly.

I agree, but I said this over a year ago on this site, and was laughed at and assured there was NO WAY Jack didnt come to Iowa. Its been pretty clear from public statements from Mama bear that she's been more then a little displeased with how "the fans" have treated the two older sons over the last several years. I'd have been shocked if Jack came to Iowa. The bad part is, I'll bet without any hesitation that Jack will be the best of the three brothers by far, as a well rounded talent. Yes we'll be fine, but you could see this coming for sometime now....
They'd all do themselves a world of good by GTFO social media.

what's sad is a lot of the social media attacks come from people hiding behind a handle; they could be anyone from any fan base

Could be just as much about Fran telling his family that he likely won't be here when Jack goes to college.

Jack stated that he's been thinking about leaving Iowa City for a while. Fran obviously told him there's no guarantee he will be at Iowa thru 2029 and that if he chose another school there's no guarantee that head coach would be there thru 2029.

It's too bad for Iowa basketball because Jack right now is 6'9 and really good; imagine what he will be like 2 years from now when he will be entering college. But this is what the Iowa fan base wants! No more McCafferys on scholarship at Iowa!

Back to the original quotes:

"I don't think I will go there. I made that up in my mind a while ago. I want to get away from home. I talked to my parents and brothers about it and I think that's the best thing for me."

Or it could be he just wants to determine his own path and make his own friends. I certainly don't blame him for that. It could be he wants to a break from everything, including the day to day with his family. Yes there is baggage with the fan base but there's also baggage with his family as well. I'm not trying to imply he doesn't care about his family, but we all reach a point where we need to determine our own direction. If he goes somewhere else, he no longer is Fran's kid, or Patrick/Connor's brother. He doesn't have to hear the day to day issues of his dad and his brothers. As someone who had older siblings, I can remember all the issues I lived through. It was nice to go to college and only worry about myself. Jack deserves the same thing. I personally believe this is the right decision for Jack and I think he's making the right decision for him. I give him credit for making the tough decision. And who knows, maybe he'll learn to play defense (oops, did I say that).

It’s Time. It’s probably better for the Kid to play somewhere else and for Fran to move on. It’s been 13 years. I personally think Patrick would be a much better player if he had played for someone else. It’s not easy or lot of times good playing for dad, especially at a D1 school. I am personally exhausted with the whole McCaffery saga.

What Iowa fans have wanted all along is fair distribution of playing time which Fran has proven he is totally incapable of when his kids are involved. Iowa fans have also wanted well rounded players who play basketball that is competent enough on both sides of the ball where a sweet 16 is possible. Iowa fans want a coach that can handle his emotions, who doesn't have complete meltdowns on the floor that builds resentment among the refs and embarrasses the school/fans.

Fran has been a failure with all of these things. He does know offense and has kept the program respectable with a very nice run of tournament berths but if he wants to bail he can leave now. There has been adversity but the U of Iowa and the fans have done a ton for that family too and if they can't see that then it's time to go

Better or worse than Tanya Alford?

I was living in out of state during the Alford years lol... But in 2015 I saw Margaret go absolutely f'ing nuclear on a poor Carver usher down on the floor level. One of the most appalling, inappropriate things I've ever witnessed. Highly doubt Tanya Alford (or any wife for that matter) could approach the pure depravity of that incident.

Probably best for everyone. I’ll always appreciate that Fran pulled us out of the dumpster fire that was Lick…but it’s been 13 years, and not a ton to show for it…plus all of the controversy.

It’s time for a fresh start. I’m ready to enjoy and follow Iowa basketball again. I’ll take my chances on a new hire. Not every coach is Todd Lickliter folks…

I say just let it be. 2 years is enormous in a teen's life.
If he does move so be it.
Fran has brought Iowa BB a lot of exciting games and players...made it fun to watch.
Clearly he is in the home stretch of his career so he may hang it up after a couple of years...or not.
He and his staff are still out there pitching the program to recruits as they always have. He is working as hard as ever so not ready to draw any conclusions from this news.
Please lay off the family.

Well said.

I can speak from experience, as I, too, left the state of Iowa when I went to college. It was one of the most important things I ever did, as far as developing my own identity, independent of my family. (Like Jack, I am also a youngest sibling.)

Whatever the specific reasons for Jack’s decision, I am proud of him for having the courage to make it.

I am ambivalent to Jack's announcement yesterday. I think it is difficult to work for or play for your Dad. Dad's alway expect and want more for their kids. Jack seems to have a lot of ball skills which Iowa could use but a third McCaffrey on the team may not be the best thing for him or his Dad. So I respect his decision.

Fran's on court behavior aside, I truly believe he loves his players and they feel the same way towards him. I think Fran has left Iowa in a very good place and should hold his head high for his accomplishments. Big Ten tourney championship, National Player of the year, Numerous drafted NBA players, numerous NCAA invites and top 5 Big Ten finishes.

I do think that Fran is on the wanying side of his career. With a new AD on the horizon, his consternation with the pay-for-play environment in college basketball and the microscope he and his family has been under for 13 years - can you blame him for retiring?

Thanks Fran for doing things the right way. Graduating players and providing many great memories.

I can't hold this against Jack one bit. Would love to see him as a Hawkeye obviously, but maybe he doesn't want to experience college in the town he grew up in. Maybe he doesn't relish having his father as his coach, just needs a fresh start after seeing his family roasted by various fans and wants to get out of this small town mentality and atmosphere. I hope he changes his mind, but I kind of doubt that he will. Margaret has been hinting at this possibility for many years.

Smart, smart decision by the McCaffreys. Many nasty and vile fans.
Iowa has probably some of the best, easy going, hospitable fans in college sports. Have you been anywhere else? Read any other sites? Just try the OSU or FLA or USC sites if you want to wake up to what fans say. Putting your kids on a team you coach has problems written all over it. I get why it gets done and Fran seems to be the type to make it work, but it didn't work out the way anybody envisioned. Jack leaving is not a done deal, IMHO, but I don't blame him for thinking Iowa is not for him

Best of luck to Jack at prep school this fall and wherever he ends up playing in college. I think a change of scenery will be better for him and the entire family.

Obviously a few people know more on here what really happened but don’t want to say, and that’s fine. But if he was the driver moving forward sticking around Iowa City would be super tough for the young man. Going to weigh on him the rest of his life no matter where he goes but staying in IC would be really tough. And again, just a rumor.

These people are rich, locally famous, most of you kiss their asses, what's there not to love? The old man is probably going to retire and move to a bigger city and his vaunted kid will have a nice mediocre career at no one cares university. The old man will get a job in broadcasting or some corporate gig that all rich white guys get, if he wants to. Until then, I'll bring out my world's smallest violin and serenade.

The fans at games have cheered for the coach and his sons. I'd agree that social media is the catalyst. It is impossible to avoid negativity. That doesn't mean most fans feel this way.

We had a Chiefs fan on this site wanting Mahomes traded. He took his team to a super bowl and won the game and MVP of the game while being visibly hurt.

Connor had a really solid senior year and I'm assuming Patrick will finish his career strong.

And don’t forget the regular season big ten title and a final four.
shared BT Championship and then losing in the 1st game of the NCAAT.

Fran has a NIT 2nd place finish 1 BTT Championship that was not shared now has the #3 and #4 best 4 year stretch of winning BB.

the longest stretch of NCAAT invites in IA's history. may have been longer if not for Covid.
