Jasper County is losing its only birthing practice. A county of 37,000 is losing their Ob/Gyns

This is the future of Iowa, I'm only slightly surprised it was a county as big as Jasper, and a city like Newton that went so fast. We have seen other smaller cities and counties lose their practicing lady parts doctors, but it is clear that Iowa is becoming a health care desert for reproductive services. This isn't abortion care that is leaving Jasper County, this is basic, fundamental reproductive care that will now require an extra 30-45 minutes in the car to receive. Precious minutes many women might not have.

Doctors should stick around. People still need their service. They're leaving their community in a lurch.

What happens when Ob/Gyns start leaving Des Moines? I suspect you'd say differently about a 40 minute drive in an emergency.
Iowa is turning into a health care desert. Anecdotally Mrs. Lucas told me UIHC isn't getting the robust level of inquiries as they have in the past years for residents in the field.
They won't leave DSM. Volume dilutes the high malpractice and overhead costs so they are still profitable.....and with the smaller county hospitals dropping OB they are having higher birthing rates to the point that sometimes it's a full hou$e.

You may even see the largest DSM hospitals expand their maternity floors.

In addition to that passage I read another article that specifically mentioned prenatal care.
The article here states prenatal visit appointments will be honored through October 15th. And then that remaining doctor will transition to family practice.

The AMA is hardly a trade union, jack-off! It’s a professional union made up of physicians….and it “negotiates” better legislation for their employees….doctors. It’s not carrying signs, working picket lines and collecting dues for pensions.
Including limiting the number of residents/doctors thus increasing their salaries. It’s a union under the disguise of a association.

I dont think anyone said it's a good thing. I might have missed it.

You didn't read the article if you come out with your politics bullshit. There was none of that unless you wanted it there and put it in there in your own head.
You 100% support the policy that is causing this so maybe don't lecture anybody else when you're against women having the same rights as men.

Iowa is last in the country in Ob/Gyn specialists per capita. 2/3 of counties in Iowa have adequate access to Ob/Gyn care.
Is this directly relate to Iowa's high infant and maternal mortality rates? This article is 2 years old, but I doubt access to care has gotten better in this time.
https://dailyiowan.com/2022/11/09/i...-per-capita-nationwide-regent-report-reveals/
Iowa’s infant mortality rate is 17th lowest in the country. Better than the national
average. Better than Illinois. Better than Michigan. Better than Hawaii. Better then Maryland. And Virginia. And Delaware.

So if they’re achieving that ranking with the lowest per capita number of ob/gyns then those doctors must be doing a hell of a job.

And infant mortality rate in Iowa also increased by 30% from 2021 to 2022

I dont remember voting for anything decades ago. What policy did I vote for when I was 20 that caused this ongoing issue?

Less health care for women. Nobody but you and Northern are talking about abortion, it's you two who kept dragging abortion into the conversation. Iowa's women are tremendously underserved. That is the actual issue.

Look below Lucas. I am not the one bringing it up. You are confused. Try just reading what I wrote and not lumping people together.

That’s largely because Iowa’s infant mortality rate in 2021 was the lowest it has been in recent history. Comparing any recent year to 2021 would seem like a major jump. But in reality 5.20 is only 6.6% higher than Iowa’s 9-year average. And, again, it’s better than the national average and better than numerous blue states where abortion access has remained unchanged since Dobbs.

2014 - 4.76
2015 - 4.23
2016 - 5.96
2017 - 5.31
2018 - 4.98
2019 - 5.02
2020 - 4.43
2021 - 3.99
2022 - 5.20

In any decent sized city you drive 20-40 minutes if you are in the burbs. DM is an easy drive from Newton. Not a big deal imho.
How much would an ambulance ride from Newton to Des Moines cost? Who's going to eat those costs when it starts occurring regularly? Losing access to specialized medicine is a big deal. I already know you voted for Trump without you saying it.

This is what's so effed up about the MAGA crowd. They are confident when they should question things. AMA is a union. How the eff do some of these guys survive daily? That's a simple fact.

The people that explain this stuff to them aren't their ONE accepted truth teller. They live in a world of alternative "facts".

Typical thread is typical. Please go on with your outrage.

They made a movie about this a few years ago, BTW.

Doc Hollywood (1991)

"A little known fact about that 1991 movie was that the real reason the small town of Grady, South Carolina was struggling for doctors was because of abortion restrictions."
- Probably Lucas

It's not a union. Please stop trying to claim otherwise. it has none of the constructs of a union. NONE.

Why can't the MAGA crowd admit they were wrong? Why do you always have to double down on stupid?

I am done with their abject stupidity. If their lives suck it's not my problem and based on the rhetoric I see on here it's most likely their own doing. If you can't get simple facts straight your life if mostly likely going to suck.

No population…really rural…really conservative…maybe “no deals or working agreements” coukd be arranged between health care providers and doctors? Could be a million reasons..
But this time it has to be the new law right? Makes sense.

Keep in mind that for some of these smaller hospitals, delivering babies doesn’t bring in a lot of money, especially when you consider they need to have anesthesia available 24/7 too. Plus there’s a much higher risk of malpractice suits. I would imagine that if some of these small hospitals did not stop delivering babies they may eventually need to close, which is worse for even more patients. Still incredibly sad and concerning they are done with deliveries though.

On a side note, it’s too bad the Des Moines hospitals being in the center of the state and all, aren’t as capable in high risk situations as UIHC.

Blank Childrens Hospital?
Idk about Blank but I’ve heard Mercy and Methodist will rarely if ever transfer patients across town to the other one. They’re in competition and always send them to the university. I don’t think it’s that they can’t handle some of this stuff if you get what I’m saying.
