First off I need to say that I am a JoBo fan and have been all 5 years. I love his grit, determination and gamesmanship! It is a true shame that an excellent shooting guard has been forced to play out of position for 5 years because Fran hasn’t been able to recruit a true point guard that he feels comfortable playing. However, while losses are a team effort, 5 of the 6 losses were largely due to ineffective point guard play by the starter. 5.2 ppg on 9-41 shooting (22%) with 3.0 A and 1.4 TOs per game in 29.4 minutes are not very good numbers. JoBo’s 18 points and 6 assists against the Buckeyes gave the Hawks a chance, but it wasn’t to be. The next 5 games are going to be huge in determining whether the Hawks are a 2 or 3 seed at the dance, or a 6 or 7 and JoBo’s play will be a major determining factor in the outcomes. Here’s hoping we get to see his A game. Now let the bashing begin by those of you who don’t like to be confused with the facts!

You like JoBo guarding 6’4’’ shooting guards? You can play Jordan at shooting guard in some matchups but your pretty much relegated to playing zone when he’s at shooting guard. I know he’s not a great defender against the opponent’s pg but an even worse mismatch against most shooting guards.

LOL yeah yeah sure you are..

OK, I'll play - and I won't attempt to bash.

If your point is that -

1. JBo isn't a natural PG, I agree. But, he isn't a natural SG either. He is undersized and slow for a B1G guard.

2. Iowa needs JBo to play well to be successful, I agree with that as well.

3. He should only play when he is playing well, good luck with that plan.

4. Fran should have better players .... ok.

5. JBo shouldn't be playing - I disagree

Or, perhaps I missed your point.

He can play SG and still guard the opposing PG (or whoever is less athletic of the two guards on the other team). He could play SG and guard the Center if he wanted to.

If you take out the 32 and 17 that Garza put up at Minnesota that gave us a fighting chance, lower than average production from him really cost us in 5 of 6 of our losses. In the other 5 losses he averaged:

22.2 PPG
7.0 RPG
51.2% FG
25.0% 3FG

This may come as a shock to the OP, but when your best players struggle, you tend to lose games.

If Jordan was more in line with his brothers in terms of height, he would have an easier time being a SG. Or if we had a tall PG like Dev Marble next to him, he would be ok.

We saw the same issue with Jok as we have seen in some games with Jbo. When Iowa's offense stagnates and / or teams play tight man on the guards, the shots aren't there. I don't recall all the games but I think there have been a couple when Jbo had an off night and missed some good looks (it happens). In the other games teams made him a focal point and the only shots he got were hurried, deep and contested. Any shooter is going to struggle in that scenario.

As we saw against MSU, ball movement is critical. IMO the team got a little too focused on forcing passes to Garza in the string of losses vs. assessing the situation and reversing the ball if Garza is blanketed. Garza was trying to do too much which compounded this. The result was 4 guys standing around essentially deferring to Garza vs. playing through him as an option.

Credit Fran for what appeared to be some tweaks to the offense with guys back cutting, better / faster decisions being made by Garza and others when there wasn't a passing lane or he knew the double was coming. Even if they can get a pass to Garza, his position is critical. Lobbing it to him under the basket with defenders collapsing is a recipe for disaster. It seemed that the team had much better situational awareness against MSU--hope it continues.

Yes, that’s what they did 2 years ago with Connor playing pg. and it worked pretty well. But when you pair him with Joe T it doesn’t work as well. You really want Joe T and his quickness and athleticism to harass the opposing pg. kind of defeats the purpose of having Joe T on the floor. Good luck having Jordan guard the center. It actually happens now and then and all Jordan can do is intentionally foul.

He was good against OSU and in the second Indiana game (BPM was 3rd highest behind Joe and Keegan). So we should probably dismiss these games. Focusing on the four games we lost where he wasn't good:

Bohannon was terrible vs Gonzaga (we lose even if somebody else plays more minutes, this was never a close game despite what we want to believe)
Indiana first game possible win if Joe plays a bunch more.
Illinois, he still had a higher BPM than Joe.
Bad against Minny loss. However, our entire bench was terrible as well with worse BPM's. No other option. If Jabo is shooting FT rather than Joe, we win. However, he wasn't the only reason we lost this game.
So in summary in our losses, maybe we win Indiana first game.

However, do we win @ Rutgers without Bohannon? No
What about UNC?
NW at home?
Do we beat Minny the second time when he led Iowa with the highest BPM and Ortg? Not sure.
What about Rutgers at home, when CJ, Connor, Joe, Nunge, and Perkins were all bad when they got in?

Finally, looking at just our losses and with the constant attention on Jbo's defense. Here is Jbo vs Joe Drtg.
Gonzaga:Jbo 119, Joe 121
Minny: Jbo 136, Joe 142
Indiana:Jbo 125, Joe 108
Illinois: Jbo 122, Joe 114
OSU: Jbo 132, Joe 130
Indiana: Jbo 101, Joe 112.
Split 3-3

True story.

He is what he is, which is a lazy assessment I know. One thing that puzzles me...is seemingly the lack of sets we run for him to get open looks. The one thing he’s known for is shooting, I think it would benefit us to have a few more set plays for him. Connor at point with bigger lineup, Joe T in smaller situations.

Granted I’m fine getting Joe W and CJ those looks. But Jbo seems like a different dude when an early 3 drops.

He’s back on Twitter. Talking about what it would have taken for him to go to Wisconsin. I’m not pleased. He seemed to play better when he was not starting sh*+. Oddly enough, no one asked me though.

We are ranked 11 in the country and people still find time to say how bad we are. I get it, the stretch we went through sucked, but most teams do this. Especially this year in the big. Now, the next few games will determine how well we have improved our D.

If CJ is healthy, Iowa can afford for JBo to be off but with CJ out the margin for error gets smaller.

If you are a big JoBo fan as you claim, then you understand that Jordan is at his best when he has the ball in his hands. He wants the ball in his hands. This, very simply, is why he gets the Point Guard minutes. I believe Fran is using him to his maximum effectiveness and I bet Jordan would agree.
