Iowa faces a season without Peter Jok and his 19.9 points per game, his clutch 3-balls, his jaw-dropping scoring frenzies. And Brady Ellingson will be looked to for a chunk of that void, at least from beyond the arc.

"(Head) coach (Fran McCaffery) has said, obviously, there’s going to be some more minutes available," Ellingson said Thursday at the Prime Time League, "but you’ve got to work for it and you’ve got to be aggressive, confident.

"I'll be ready."

If last year is any indication, the redshirt junior seems ready for a bigger role with the Hawkeyes.

Ellingson led Iowa in 3-point shooting (47.1 percent, 32-for-68). He didn't start a game, but he played in all 34 and gradually earned more minutes as the season wore on. He averaged 12.7 minutes during nonconference competition; that number jumped to 15.7 in Big Ten Conference play.

"I think he’s up for the challenge, for sure," Jordan Bohannon said of Ellingson. "Obviously, he can really shoot the ball. He’s going to get his shots. And it’s going to help when me and him are on the court at the same (time) — when me, (Moss) and him are together. Just because we’re all shooters, we’re all going to open up each other’s games.

"(Ellingson's) mechanics are some of the best in the country. He has that shooter’s mentality where the last shot doesn't matter. He’s going to keep shooting, he’s going to keep filling it up."

"He’s just a smart player," Bohannon said. "He’s not going to turn the ball over. He’s not going to rush or anything. He’s going to make the right read at the right time. And his defense is improving. He's one of the best defenders now on the team. He’s able to move laterally.

"You’re really going to be able to see that this season. That’s going to help him play a lot more this upcoming season."

Getting billed as one of the best defenders is HUGE (assuming it's that he has improved and not that everyone else has regressed/are just not good defensively -- just playing devil's advocate). If we can play JoBo, Ellingson, Baer while being able to defend the perimeter... think about the spacing that will be there (or the open 3s that will rain down).

The only way for someone to be open will be if the other team has to double team someone, anyone. Until one of our players requires a double team or can drive around the defender, we're not going to see a lot of open shots.

Theres also screens to get open. Both off and on ball.

A couple of our bigs should force the defense to sag a bit then it will depend on how well they can pass out of it.

Hopefully Moss and Williams can provide an element of penetrating ability.

Also I think Cook will be able to isolate at mid post against most bigs and go around them.

In my opinion, if you are shooting 47% from 3pt, then you aren't shooting nearly enough. Ellingson is the type of player who only seems to shoot when he's wide open, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, when Bohannon, Jok, Cook, and Moss were all on the bench last year and we were struggling to find points, it would have been nice to see Brady be a bit more aggressive shooting the ball, even if it means forcing a shot from time to time.

JBO has himself playing with Ellingson and Moss at the same time. That seems interesting to me.

I couldn't disagree more.

If defenders are that worried about shooters, we will be able to play inside/out which will create double team situations. One way or the other, our shooters are going to get shots. Most of our bigs are good passers and will hit cutters effectively as well.

Correct. The comment we responded to completely neglected the motion offense and our passing.

Did I not say that someone will need to be double teamed?

You said “the only way” for someone to get an open shot would be if someone was double-teamed. My point is that ball movement and motion offense create open shots, not just a double-team.

I also mentioned being someone being able to drive past a defender.

This thread is about BE and him getting more minutes with JB. While I like him, he's shown he's not going be effective unless he's got space. I include JB to be similar but has a much farther range. Sure I'll give you ball movement and motion offense will create some open shots but for us to be good, we're going to need guys who can create double teams on a consistent basis.

The team played really well without Jok last year. I see no reason why they shouldn't be just fine without him this year. I thought Brady had a really nice floor game. He's a good passer and he made good decisions. I'm looking forward to seeing his continued development.

Brady is too reluctant to shoot. I commented in season that he was passing up too many open shots.

Brady's defense also improved. He gets posterized about once a game but otherwise has become pretty solid in our zones. He's become respectably good at cutting off fast breaks. Improving as a player and definitely deserving of more time this season.

That's something I noticed last season. Brady was shooting more and that's quite a contrast to when he was more of a willing passer. Hope that trend continues.

Jordan is correct when he said that they were all shooters. Add to that, Garza, Moss, and Kreiner (very impressed with his outside shooting), and of course Cook, Nunge, and Baer. If Brady gets into a "groove", then look out. We could be headed for a high finish in the BIG.

I hope Fran has made them write 1000 times on the blackboard, "Defense". J/K but if the "D" is there, then Jordan nailed it for a winning season once again. :)

I'm trying to think of how often I've seen guards being double teamed. Even Jok. How often was he double teamed? We've got the exact guys back, minus Jok....

How is it again we've suddenly got a problem with our offense?

I think the offense is going to be better without Jok. The ball won't stick in one place. Jok was great for the Hawks but we could be better offensively without him.

I expect the offense to be pretty good, once the rotation gets figured out. The defense is a work in progress. Ellingsen as our best defender isn't going to strike fear in BIG back courts but he can't be worse than Jok on that end. I think Williams has the chops to be a good on ball defender if he embraces that roll.

Absolutely.

The worst thing that happened last year was when Jok would get hot and everyone else stopped looking at the basket and tried to force the ball to him instead of playing normally.

It doesn't take the defense long to figure that out and you end up with allot of turnovers and bad shots.

Williams and Moss could both be excellent defenders.

While I agree if he can get his shot off, he should be shooting more...I just don't recall him passing up that many shots. He is not quick and he has a slow release and he needs a few feet of clearance to get his shot off...his hot 3pt shooting meant most teams made it a point to defend him at the 3pt line. A couple teams didn't and they paid the price.

I dont think his release is slow, but its not high, and he's not tall.

Hes also not much of a threat to drive so defenders can play him close.
