Joe T

He needs more respect from Iowa fans. I still think that there will be a trio of 1-2 guards each playing ~25 minutes/game, including Joe T, JoBo, and CJ. Any 2 of those 3 should be on the floor at all times.

He’s my favorite player. He plays HARD on both ends. I graduated from UI in 1989 and I can’t recall another like Joe T

Dude - did you miss the 90s? The kid reminds me a lot of Woolridge. Joe T is obviously quicker but always finds a way to get to the rim. Just needs to get pull-up elbow shot down and we could have Dre 2.0

He will get better and better. He's the quickest player Fran has ever had.

It was nice too see him battle through a few rough spells...not lose confidence and come back and make plays.when he got his chance on the court. He earned his starting position.

Joe reminds me a LITTLE of Ronnie Lester. I'm saying his playing style and funky shot have some similarities to Ronnie. Ronnie didn't have the smooth looking shot but he got the job done and was a great distributor and Joe can be that too. He needs to let the game slow down for him some. He's faster than Ronnie but plays hard all the time like Ronnie.
Let's hope that by the time he's a senior he is like Ronnie.

Nobody is faster than Ronnie, the whole Big 10 had to zone Iowa since no one guy could cope with Ronnie’s speed. Joe T is damn fast though

Impressive compliment from Anthony Cowan Jr...

Joe T will be nearly unstoppable if/when he enhances his outside shooting. He looked like he wasn’t too far off to being reasonably effective on his outside shooting last year to me.
I was really impressed with his sudden change of direction move where he reverses direction 180 degrees when cut-off on a drive putting his off-hand on the floor like the axle of a revolving wheel. Never seen that before. Agility plus!

Woolridge was a much different player from body type to size to quickness etc.

Woolridge was 6' 190
Toussaint is 6' 185

Woolridge was effective at getting to the rim with his strength, which Joe T will be able to do as he develops. Quickness wise, definitely Joe T is quicker. If Joe gets his shot to be more consistent, I see them as very similar players.

He gets plenty of respect from Iowa fans. Just because people point out that he was prone to turnovers, sometimes in bunches, doesn't mean he wasn't respected. There is plenty of talent there, but he was a freshman that played out of control at times.

I agree with you about the out of control sometimes comment. But I didn't see his named mentioned in the starting 5 - I still think he should be in there as a starter, then bring JoBo off the bench and to finish games. I think the change of pace between the 2 would benefit both and cause issues for opposing teams. Plus, I like the fast starts with Joe T, and having a great ft player on the floor to close out games with JoBo.

Well here's a fan who has seen the light on Joe T. Not thrilled at his recruiting on signing day, not down but not high either. Everything that has happened since has shown me that we now have a talented and high potential player.

Last summer my friends in IC that still have some access to players said we would love Joe T and CJ. Spot on. Joe just kept improving until the season ended. Hit some nice threes down the stretch. Iowa fans should love this kid!

The incoming freshmen might be pretty good players before they're done but next season there is no reason that two of the three (Jordan, CJ and Joe T) should ever be off the court in a competitive game.

Nobody will match Lester's "teardrop" shot.

My favorite Joe T moment SO FAR:

late first half against wisconsin, rookie mistake and gives up an ill advised foul to give a 1 and 1, leads to 2 pts. With seconds left drives the length of the court and goes THROUGH the biggest Wisconsin player on the court for and-1.
How many true freshman keep their head up through that, let alone stay the aggressor? His speed and athleticism will make him good, his head will make him great.

And how was Joe T NOT respected by Iowa fans? I think his upside is revered by fans. He is raw but the upside is undeniable.

Joe T made some dumb mistakes last season, and they tended to come in tranches. Not always turnovers but silly freshmen mistakes. The beautiful thing for Iowa, for the first time in a long time, we had a very viable reserve to play those minutes when Joe's head was spinning.

Next season with Joe and Jordan ahead of Ahron we should have the luxury of Ahron learning in practices and blowouts rather than the pressure of tight games.

I seriously doubt that Fran is going to bench JBo in favor of JT. I like them both, but JBo did not return to be a sub. I do like JT and think he has a ton of talent.

J Bo has earned the right to start and Joe T has earned minutes. Teams who aren’t deep at guard have some long nights ahead of them when they face Iowa.

When considering starting JoeT, it’s not a matter of who’s “earned” it. Of course, JBo has. It’s a skills rotation issue. It probably won’t happen. But consider the possibility from what skills are needed when. Does the starting lineup in 2020 need more D than O? Yes. Have some players off the bench for Iowa played more than some starters? See Nic Baer, who usually ended games on the floor. Would JBo buy in if he thought it was a better rotation with him coming in off the bench? Of course he would.

Joe and Jordan bring totally different talents to the game so I don't really see them competing for the same minutes,... I see their games being used in a complimentary fashion...

My highest hope for this tandem is not based upon what happens in games, but what happens in practice against each other. A healthy Jordan is going to be forced to defend a slashing guard every day in practice. His defense will improve. And Joe will be defending on an island far from the hoop. Both players' defense improves.

And, I get the sense Joe has quite a competitive streak, he won't want to be outdone from distance. He will be driven to improve that outside shot. We already know about Jordan's competitive streak, he's not going to let the newer guy rise above him.

They will compliment each other perfectly in games, improve each other in practice. Jordan will start games and finish them, as he should. But, there will be no overall drop-off when Joe enters a game. When's the last time Iowa could say that about it's top two 1's?
