It Feels Like We’re Nearing the End

Terrible offense last night.... Yet defense closed out the last 3 mins against WSU.

Both things were true for that Richmond game.... My gosh we have PTSD as Iowa fans when it comes to tournament CLUNKERS. That team felt like one that could make a run.
What about that stat line from the richmond game says Iowa played poorly on defense that day? Had Iowa shot even 30% from 3 that day they win.

I agree that team could have gone on a run however.

Try again. We shot 34%, 20% from 3 that game.

They only scored 67.
Tell me you didn’t want the game without actually telling me. Their point guard shredded our defense the entire night. Bohannon couldn’t do anything on him. Gilyard averaged under 5 pts a game in his career. He had 24 against Iowa. Doubled the baskets that our starting guards had in the game. More assists than both of our guards combined. Yes. Our defense lost us that game because we can’t guard and we didn’t have guards.

Tell me you haven't read my posts without actually telling me. At no point have I defended Bohannon's defense. You're weirdly ignoring how Iowa had one of it's worst shooting nights of the season - and Richmond wasn't an elite defense either. Had Iowa simply made 3 more shots that day, Iowa wins.

Seems like a good time to revisit this thread.

Fran seems to have a little juice in recruiting.

But this team is absolutely lifeless. That was perhaps the worst half of Iowa basketball this century. And more concerning, the team’s body language was despicable.

Analytically speaking, we’re going to be in a DEEP hole to make the tournament. Not sure how you justify bringing Fran back if we settle for another NIT

Not sure we will qualify for the NIT.

He's already leaving after this year. Sold his house. You think he's gonna live in IC while all his kids are in Indiana as well as a possible DIL?

If that is true, Beth needs to have a sit down.

His sitting on his a$$ all game tonight along with selling his house over the summer....

Complete dereliction of duty

He's just finishing out the year waiting for Jack to graduate and off he goes.

He's probably sandbagging so he gets fired and gets his buyout. Otherwise he'd leave on his own end of year and get zip.

I agree that Fran’s teams have had limitations that he hasn’t been able to correct but he still has put above average teams on the floor that deserve better support from the fans. I think you over estimate the nil that Iowa basketball players receive.

He's a few games over 0.500 for his 15 year career in Big10+ BTT games. It is a little bit of a stretch to say he puts out above average teams. I puts out middle of the pack teams. He had a couple good years with Garza and Keegan, but even those teams flamed out in NCAA tourney play. Iowa's peers are other P5 programs with similar financial resources. Iowa is down there with Nebraska, Rutgers, Minnesota as having the longest streak without making a sweet16 and most of that streak is Fran.

If that is true, hope Beth has already had that conversation and is in the process of making a list of potential coaches to interview after the season. It's time.....

Yeah, I think Beth was on the side of waiting Fran out for another year and getting the buyout down. Fran actually forces her hand by putting out chitty team. If he gets fired he gets the full buyout. If he leaves on his own accord, a lessor negotiated payout.

I doubt he is tanking on purpose, but he might be completely stupid. He's always been stubborn about what lineups/who he plays. His embace of small ball and no rebounding/paint defense has taken the Iowa defense to a new low----its not working, up to him to fix.

Sold it but apparently bought a bigger one. Doesn’t seem like he is looking to leave. He will be back next year unless Beth fires him….which I don’t think she will.

No freaking chance they make the tournament. That ship sailed with Fran’s putrid recruiting and decades-long terrible defenses (been going on a long time here, you guys are finally waking up.).

JBO couldn't stick with his guy and it was the Richmond 5'10 PG that tore us apart. The Richmond game shows Fran/ Iowa's problem---Iowa defense is never good enough to shutdown a Mid major team to grind out a win when shots aren't dropping. That Iowa team depended on Keegan putting up big points/plays and he hurt his ankle. Maybe that Iowa team would have beaten Providence, but Richmond beat us and they couldn't beat Providence in next round, so not assured.

The Garza team and Keegan teams....Fran never put together a good enough supporting cast for those teams to do anything. Fran didn't want anyone to compete with his two boys for playing time.

Anyway the proof is in the product. Fran's ability to avoid dog chit years has been exceptional, but getting any hardware to have a speical
season elusive, and DOA in NCAA tourney. Kinda Meh.

I'd say not just kinda Meh. Fran's entire tenure is the definition of Meh.
The Murrays and Garza excitement are more than offset by the dismal failure that is the performance of his tourney teams. Add up all of the other positives and negatives of his tenure and the final sum is a resounding, shoulder shrugging Meh.

I don't think Fran has been a bad coach (or a particularly good one), but I now agree that it is time for him to join his family in Indiana. Not sure that will have a positive impact, unless the new coach can keep some of the guys on the team, especially Freeman and Dix, and the portal transfer coming in. I think the players are more likely to stay, if the break appears to be Fran's choice. With the transfer portal, it is possible to create a good team quickly, if Iowa has more NIL to work with going forward.

I'm not overly concerned about keeping players other than Freeman and Dix.
If a new coach comes in and he can convince those two to stay, brings 3-4 quality guys with him and then hits the portal I wouldn't be too upset if most of the rest of the current roster went elsewhere. Particularly since Thelwell is done after this season.
