Jok deserves 1st team

the Big Ten champion usually gets a long look at two players on the first team if they are both deserving.

if he keeps putting up 20-30 points a game he deserves 1st team for sure.

I think Jok makes second team. Hammonds probably goes first team over him.

Gesell statistically has probably made a case for third team

Forgot about Hammond but I think he takes Trible's spot. I still think Jok has a great chance if he averages 17-20 the rest of the year.

Maybe, I just think the Melo Trimble hype train is too much.

Jok should be almost guaranteed to make it next year if he plays like he has this year, with Hammonds, Uthoff, Yogi, and Valentine all gone

I
Jok because he's a JR will not make 1st team All Big Ten, now Uthoff is a lock for 1st team unless he fails to finish the season....
if he keeps playing well he will. Averaging 15.8 points and averaging over 17 in conference play. Shooting 44.8 percent from the field over 40 percent from three on an 11-2 team. To this point, there haven't been 5 better players in conference.

I agree. And the Melo hype is better than the Melo play right now. 1-14 and 2-12 in his last 2 B1G games and he's had some other duds in there too. 2-7 against Iowa and 3-15 against Penn State.
He is shooting 28% from 3 in conference.

If there were 6 players on the first team I think he makes it. Definitely outplaying Melo. I wonder if Trimble has hurt his draft status coming back this year.

I think it will be...

Valentine (POY)
Uthoff (DPOY)
Hammons
Ferrel
Hayes

Valentine and Uthoff should be the only locks for first team all B1G right now, but reputations determine more than performance sometimes. The other most likely candidates are Yogi, Melo, Hammons, and Hayes. Team performance might determine which of those guys gets bumped to second team. Offensively, Pete deserves serious consideration, but I will be very surprised if he isn't second team.

Just about any Iowa player, except Pete, could be named to the all-defensive team. I think Sapp will get it, and Woody has a good shot.

How teams finish will determine whether Iowa's players will get even more recognition.

The last spot on first team will come down to:
Jok
Hayes
Trimble

The team that wins the most games will have the final player.
Wisconsin has 3 ranked teams out of 6. If they win 5, Hayes will probably win it, if they lose 3, second team.

Maryland has a fairly soft schedule but Trimble's numbers are very mediocre for 1st team. (Suliamon's almost got better numbers). If Maryland ties for 1st in conference, they won't get shut out though.

Jok has consistently led a 2nd half scoring charge for Iowa. If they are stand alone in 1st place, he'll be first team with his pts and steals per game.

What about the guy for Illinois?
The fact that he plays for Illinois probably puts him on second team at best. I think Rutgers has an 18 ppg scorer too that won't do better than second team.

Nigel Hayes was a guy that I forgot about. He's made a strong case and has really stepped up this year.

If Jok gets his conference avg over 19 pts a game, he'll be 1st team.

That would put him in the top 3 in scoring: how cool would that be?

IMO, the only chance Pete would have to be first-team all B1G would be for the Hawks to win the rest of their conference games and he continue to be putting up big numbers. Even then, other players are more likely (Yogi, Melo, Hayes, Hammons). Sanders, White, and Hill might not be 2nd team (or even 3rd), even though they are 3-5 in conference scoring.

Iowa is in first in conference. If Jok averages 15-18 ppg the last 6, hes a first team all big ten player. I think at minimum he is second team all big ten. The guys you listed in sanders, white and hill are up there un scoring but their teams have bad records and it's so tough to get postseason awards on bad teams.

I think Pete will be 2nd team, but he has to displace Yogi, Melo, Nigel or Hammons. Since Jarrod is already first team and Pete isn't a senior, it is easier to vote him second team. Personally, I don't think Mel, Yogi or Hammons have been playing that great. Nigel has been great over the past month.

Yep. jok will be one the three best players in the big ten along oath Nigel Hayes and miles bridges

Jok is not deserving of 1st Team All B1G. He is pretty much a one-dimensional scorer that plays average defense. He cannot create his own shot and when he tries he turns into a turnover machine. To be a 1st Team All Conference a player must contribute in well in multiple facets of the game and Jok is just not that player!

You serious, Clark?

I'm not sure what you mean when you say he cannot create his own shot. He can get his shot off over virtually anyone and he has a nice pull up jumper off the dribble. It is true he often gets into trouble when he drives too far to the hole, but I think it is highly inaccurate to say he can't create his own shot.

The last two years that would have absolutely been true but he has been a much more versatile player this year. He has finished around the rim a lot more this year, along with being a much improved defender. How many steals has he turned into fast break points himself?

Exactly my point!!! He typically does not catch and create when guarded tightly in man-to-man. He does not beat people off of the bounce.

My guess is he'll be 2nd team. 1st team next season.
I think you are probably right. He may sneak on as a coaches pick or media pick but don't see him making both.

Tough to get two guys on 1st team in a 14 team league, even if they are both deserving

The last two years that would have absolutely been true but he has been a much more versatile player this year. He has finished around the rim a lot more this year, along with being a much improved defender. How many steals has he turned into fast break points himself?
Live ball turnovers create run-out baskets. He has improved, I believe the premise of the thread centers on whether he is a 1st Team All Conference selection. I do not believe that he is and stated why. You are pointing to his improvement, which I do not disagree with; however, in my opinion he is not 1st team this year. Time will tell whether I am right or wrong.

Idea. Let the season finish first, and then see what you think. Lots of games to play and stat stuffing to boot. These are crunch time games, too.

So he needs to create more dead ball turnovers... Got it.

I don't think he will get it, but if he continues to play like he has in conference he absolutely would be deserving, as the thread title states.

Exactly my point!!! He typically does not catch and create when guarded tightly in man-to-man. He does not beat people off of the bounce.
I don't think you read the rest of my post. He is very good when he pulls up for a 15 footer off the bounce. And he doesn't need to beat guys off the bounce because with his quick release he can shoot it to 24 feet with s guy in his face. I don't think you can say he doesn't create his own shot.

With the exception of Valentine and Uthoff, there may no more deserving player for First Team All Big Ten than Jok. He's been spectacular in all facets of the game. I'd definitely vote him the Most Improved Player in the Big Ten as well.
