Josh O./Ulis to the portal

Ulis was rated .9141 by 247 coming out of HS, which is a pretty high rated recruit. He is the #11 all time highest Iowa recruit based on 247 ranking. Crazy.
A lot of this was based around his brother. Something to remember with recruiting rankings is that they often try to predict how good a guy is going to be in the future--not necessarily how good they are right now.
The number 1 recruit for next year for some sites is Xavier Booker who, by all accounts, is pretty raw and likely a bit of a project. He just has the athletic ability to be a Zion Williams type of guy if he were to continue to improve. Just something to think about.

The reasoning is probably Amarion Nimmers

Check out his highlights and the discussion here:

I agree. Plus Fran has contacred a couple guards so was expecting Uhlis was leaving. I like Uhlis but think upgrading his position is necessary for us to be successful. Good luck to both players. I always thought Josh would get his conditioning and weight under control but after he said he was going to 3 years ago and never did I'm not surprised he didn't get much time on the floor. I think Riley could still be good and contribute. He runs the court well and is definitely a positive kid.

I demand that you demand that....
In the last 9 months I've demanded that:
Iowa baseball makes the B10 title game/regional (didn't happen). Although they have a great shot this year and off to an excellent start, love the tournament in Omaha too!
Iowa football offense improves and/or BF leaves (didn't happen)
Bball team makes a S16 for the first time in 24 years (didn't happen)
Maybe I should stop demanding? :) Naw....

Oh, I demand the women make a Final 4! Has it ever happened?

I think it’s notable that both portal departures were announced at nearly the same time, followed by a quick statement from the university. It makes me think that this will be it as far a portal departures go. If the coaching staff thought more were to come, I think they might have waited on the statement.

The leverage coaches used to have with young guys on their team is gone. You used to be able to have a conversation with a freshman like Dix or Bowen at the end of a season that just happened and dangle the carrot of increased playing time next year. More importantly, if they wanted to go elsewhere, they were likely sitting out a year. That’s all gone. Time to start adjusting.

I don't think it was a mistake because I don't think it was as simple as Fran making Joe T the starter. I think if Fran did that there were consequences to that, like, maybe there is no Bowen? Or maybe Perkins leaves? Would Uhlis improve? I think the decision that was made was that Bowen>Joe T but Bowen didn't flash like a lot of people expected him to.
Right. Joe wasn't perfect, but he was and remained better than Bowen and Ulis. That's why it was a mistake. Fran rolled the dice and lost.

I like Ulis as a player. But there’s no way Fran could have wanted him to leave. He’s one of your two starters coming back. If that’s the case, and Fran wanted him gone, what does that tell you about our lineup this past year?!? The only way this makes sense is if Fran thinks he’s going to hit big, and I mean real big, in the guard transfer portal.

It feels that way to me too

I take it you haven't watched the Nimmer highlights.

There may be some Swarm money behind the scenes. I would rate Bowen >> Ulis and give Bowen NIL money. Same with Perkins. I am not worried about Ulis transferring elswhere and having a season that makes Iowa regret letting him go because he just seems to have little talent on offensive side of the ball.

Assuming Fran brings in some replacements, losing Ulis and Josh is not bit hit in productivity, but both seemed like high character guys.

I also think Fran is up front about where they stand in the lineup and future minutes. He couldn't give Joe T the 20 plus minutes a game that he wanted so it gave him an opportunity to transfer. It didn't work out for him abd he probably would have had about the same here but he gave it a shot and did make a difference to West Virginia. I've always defended Uhlis and like the kid but we can definitely upgrade that position next season.

Actually, Joe wanted 30 plus minutes and at West Virginia he was not getting those type of minutes.

On March 30, 2022, in a podcast, Chad Leistikow of the Des Moines Register stated that he talked to Fran after Joe announced he was leaving Iowa. Joe wanted 30 plus minutes per game playing time. Fran could not guarantee this because Fran was high on Dasonte Bowen. Fran told Chad that Joe was not miserable; he just wanted more.

So, was Joe getting his 30 minutes/game? Nope.

In the 34 games he played in, here was his playing time at West Virginia:

* 30 minutes or more 3 times
* 19 minutes OR LESS 13 times

During his last season at Iowa Joe averaged 17 minutes/game. At West Virginia this past season he averaged just 22.

That's right. I was thinking 30 but thought that was so much it just couldn't be. Thanks for the correction. I hate relaying the wrong information.

The reasoning is probably Amarion Nimmers

Check out his highlights and the discussion here:

I don’t think it’s a coincidence at all that the Nimmers video surfaced when it did.

Ahron & Josh are both good Hawkeyes and I wish them all the best wherever they land and hope they find what they're looking for there. Honestly, I thought the first portal loss would be Bowen, but so far nothing on that horizon. I hope he sticks around too as there is some talent there and I thought Fran should have provided more minutes, but that's water under the bridge now.

We're going to be a ridiculously young roster next year it appears.

Yeah, always need a backup big or two, so right now it's Mulvey and Braun along with freshman Freeman
3 open rides with Kris leaving and Braun filling one of those so two portal players to be named later!

Is Braun officially going to be a Hawk? I know he told his teammates he was coming to Iowa but....

Has Nimmers earned a scholarship? Not yet, but....

Not counting Braun and assuming Kris is gone & Jelly & Ahron don't come back, this is where things stand for next season:

2023-2024 Roster (10 on Scholarship; 3 scholarships available):

FRESHMEN: 4 players

6"10" C Owen Freeman
6'0" PG Brock Harding
6'7" SF Pryce Sandfort
6'8" PF Ladji Dembele

SOPHOMORES: 2 players

6'3" PG Dasonte Bowen
6'5" SG Josh Dix

JUNIORS: 2 players

6'7" F Payton Sandfort
6'11" C Riley Mulvey

SENIORS: 2 players

6'4" G Tony Perkins
6'9" SF Patrick McCaffery

4 Notable Walk on players:

SENIORS: 1 player

Dante Eldridge (assistant coach Courtney Eldridge's son)--walk on.

JUNIORS: 1 player

Luc Laketa-- preferred walk on

SOPHOMORES: 1 players

Carter Kingsbury--preferred walk on.

FRESHMEN: 1 player

Amarion Nimmers--preferred walk on.

Because he wasn't very good.
That doesn't explain why Ulis would transfer. If Bowen isnt that good and there is nobody on campus right now that could take minutes otherwise then I dont think Ulis would transfer based on minutes. Kinda hard for Fran to predict who will work out if they arent even on campus yet.

Nimmers is probably the starter at this time although Fran has contacted a couple of guards in the portal but sounds like Nimmers is pretty electric and is a better shooter, can finish drives to the rim, and is good on defense. I'm excited to see him play.
