Kenyon Murray has A LOT to say about this team

Interesting in what he said that a teams number 1 focus is to get stops. That's huge. Iowa struggles doing that and the other team gets. A lot of key offensive rebounds. He has good points. Toughness is something that Iowas seniors lack. Tom Izzo said in an interview this year that he never though Iowas teams were tough. They are soft and don't take pride in getting stops Late in games.

Link? I recall him saying Iowa had not been tough in the past, Fran was but the team wasn't. But after getting beat I don't remember him saying we weren't tough this year.

Please just don't reply to me. I'm asking nicely.
If you make comments that are flat out wrong, I need to point it out to others. I don't care if you read them. Put me on ignore. I'm not making my case to convince you, that's a hopeless case, I'm making my points to others who are more open minded. I'm sorry if differing opinions offend you.

If he posted this on here without you knowing who he was, your telling me people on this board would be ok with it.

"I guarantee you that in this loss, the coaches probably feel worse than the players and that can't happen. And you won't win if the coaches are always feeling worse than the players. You will never win a championship at any level."

"In 4 years at Iowa, we never lost a Senior game. None of our seniors ever lost. And there is a reason for it. It's the last time they dress and get to play in front of that great crowd at Carver Hawkeye Arena. I loved playing at Carver Hawkeye. If you can't get amped up for your Senior game, then you never deserved to wear the uniform."
The sally sunshiners would have went bonkers. They would have said, 'when did you ever play D1 basketball" or "when were you ever a coach", all the while trotting out their boring coaching experience at junior high and high school level. Any poster who would have dared wrote what KM said and the sally sunshiners would have unleased the heat of 10 suns upon them. Now, we have them saying, "KM is just an angry fan but doesn't know what he's talking about. He's never coached". The sunshiners refuse to even accept the possibility that KM could be correct on many, if not all points. It's sad that people can take a critical eye and look at the situation.

The same people ragging on KM are the same that do it to DD and for record it all comes back to mental toughness, which most on this team don't have, we will have more next year and might be better because of it.
The truth scares them, they prefer to live in the world of make believe.

I just don't like that you are a big fat liar.

Any Hawkeye fan knows Kenyon has plenty of coaching experience!!! I can't believe you are still allowed on this board. I'll tell you what, you've just about ruined the experience for me on here after stalking my posts and rewriting what I've said for the last 15 months.

So let me hand it to you, keep it up with the attacks on Hawkeye fans and I WILL find a board for fans. This place even gets comments on the Rivals main board forum about all it's negative "fans"!!!!

Sigh. Go, I don't care. I've said you should put me on "ignore" if you don't like my points. You just don't like someone who counters you, that irritates the hell out of you.

I know you favor censorship of people who disagree with your views, or who aren't always positive about what's happening with the team. You probably were never criticizing Lickliter and what was happening under his regime (and no, I'm not comparing Fran's coaching to Lick). You see what you want to see, but that doesn't make it the truth. I've made many positive comments about this team this year, but the criticisms I've made for the team's play since early Feb, are clearly fair. Many of the points I've brought up are similar to what Murray said, but using your logic Murray should not be allowed to post here.

I'll say it again. Put me on ignore, don't respond, or leave. I don't care. But if you are going to post on a public board I have every write to comment and put forth arguments why I disagree with your comments, as long as I'm being civil. Unlike you, I'm not trying to censor your comments, I'm making arguments where I disagree and kudos for where we agree. Don't live in a bubble where the only people you communicate with are like minded. It's gives you a distorted view of the world.

I had you on ignore for six months and you still replied to my posts rewriting them in lies. Like you did on this very thread! Don't worry about my responses though, you cockroach. I've been turning myself in starting today for each response to you...because your behavior either causes me to be some slight, mouse and say nothing, or answer back and assist you in ruining this board.

So rest assured, I'll be reporting this post as well. Hey monitors!!!! I'm going to keep bitching about this nut case until either he's gone or I am!!!!

How would you know what I wrote if you had me on ignore for 6 months? That's a contradiction.

More ad hominems from you and I'm the one that needs to go. Sigh.

Me making the same criticisms Kenyon Murray has made is "not ruining this board". If you've read my posts this season then you know I've been positive many times. In fact, I've hardly been negative until recent weeks, because Iowa isn't playing well. If all you want are opinions that mirror your own then you should start your own message board and keep out anyone who makes even the slightest criticism of the team/coaches/players/performance.

Dan, it doesn't help the situation when you call another poster a piece of s***, a skunk, and trash.

I get it that you don't like the negative comments towards the team and Fran and you are not a fan of posters who are critical of Iowa. My best advice is to put posters you don't like on ignore or just post in the lounge. This is a really great place and we all are rooting for the same team. Let's not tear each other down too!
Agree. I don't post in the lounge, so Dan won't have to worry about me there. I love this place because we are all Hawk fans but we aren't monolithic in how we look at the team. If I just want to read my own thoughts I'd just write them down and stare at them all day. I like reading people who have different views from mine as it helps me look at things in a different light, a different perspective. If this site were to just become positive talk about the team, and no criticism allowed then I would leave. The same would be true if only criticisms were allowed and no positive talk was allowed. Who wants group think were if you deviate from popular opinion you are banished?

Interesting that no one commented on KM's description of how Woody benefitted from doing pick and roll with Paige in high school. He played with Paige in AAU, not high school. He managed to do fairly well without Marcus at SC East.

Phantom Flyer and Dan?

Agree. I also don't remember those teams doing anything different in different situations. Always pressed, always ran the same motion offense, and always left 3 pt shooters open.

Kenyon is correct in his points, IMO. But I don't agree that Davis's teams did those things.
Yes, Dr Tom teams played one way. They had to be the easiest team to prepare for in the BIG. However,I would argue that the BIG10 was brutal back then. It was a great league..Indiana,Michigan,MSU,Purdue,Illinois,Minnie..And you had to play them twice..There was no uneven schedule like there is now so a team like Indiana benefits from playing the easiest. I don't expect them to do much in the BIG tourney or NCAA.

However I agree about his comments about the current team.

Good point. If you notice when Woody does roll, he's often wide open, but the guards never feed him the ball. They did earlier in the season, but they have went away from this. Now, we have Woody setting screens up high and then instead of rolling to the basket, he sets another screen.

I have pretty much stayed away from this forum for the past week, but I have mostly seen posters, including some of the sally sunshiners like me, agreeing with most of what KM said. I do think that he maybe has some selective memory about how good the teams he played on were, but time does that.

I do agree with KM having selective memory, which I'd say most players do in referring to "their" coach. I never remember Dr. Tom's teams as being stellar defensive teams in the halfcourt. However, I never remember Dr. Tom teams that effort was questioned. They played their rear ends off they just didn't always have the greatest talent. I do think KM's specific points about this team are correct. Fran seemed to respect the input of the N. Fla coach a couple years ago, I wonder if he would be receptive to sitting down and listening to KM's critique of the team. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes, a fresh perspective is needed to fix the problem(s).

Dan your need to see yourself as the hawkeye superhero is also offensive. Who put you in charge of defining what a fan should post? All the sports boards are full of negative chit when a team goes on this type of losing streak. If the Iowa B-ball starting 5 wants to make a statement to shut up the naysayers, they might try winning. Folding at home on senior night after the bench brought them back from 14pt deficit was not a statement.

Not to worry as I'm sticking to the Lounge and leaving the free board for others to enjoy without my thin skinned reactions.

My fault for getting upset. Hope those on the free board find things more enjoyable in the future.

One last thing, I've never seen anyone leave a board because it wasn't negative enough, but the reverse I've seen repeatedly.

Dan I've never had a problem with you even though at times I don't agree with you. I've often enjoyed your humor when you try and lighten things up on this board. But I got off the football board because anything someone said critical about KF and you got labeled a non-Iowa fan. And it's total bs if you ask me. There's a lot more actual x's and o's talk on the basketball board and that's what I like talking about. With the success Fran has had you have gotten a lot more bandwagon fans both ways. People where you can't say one criticizing thing about the program and people that are negative nellies about everything. But make no mistake they are both equally as bad if you ask me. This current Iowa team just needs to win so some sanity can come back to this board.

The highlighted annoys the hell out me. It's a major point the Stacy King brings up during Bulls games. You must identify who the other teams shooters are early on and you make sure they don't get wide open looks. You don't leave them open by rotating over, you keep in contact with that guy and never give him wide open shots.

The last paragraph also touches on a point I've made when I call Fran, The Frontrunner. When things are going well, and everyone is hitting their shots, all is good in Fran world. However, when that's not the case the team plays tentative, guys are hesitant, and they look like a mess. Part of that is on coaching, it's the coaches job to change the mindset, to get the team believing in themselves again. Fran hasn't shown he has this ability, as we've seen some incredible meltdowns during his tenure. He's yet to show he can right the ship when the team is headed for the iceberg. I'll be surprised if this team wins the rest of the season. I don't know if it's something that can be fix by bringing in a new asst coach, but Fran has to do something when the team starts on a downward spiral. Right now it looks like Fran is the man with no plan.
OMG, did you just question Franny's coaching ability on THIS forum? The heresy. All anybody here cares about is that he's better than Lickliter. Franny found his perfect spot. He followed a totally incompetent coach into a fan base that is content with slightly better than average. Hey, if we get into the NCAA we had a great season. Why dream big, like an MSU fan?

IOWA DID TRY DREAMING BIG and look where it got us. We let Dr Tom go and hired Wonder Boy who everyone including me was estatic about. Fran has brought respectability back to the program. We are a top 25 team again. Is he perfect..NO..but who is? Given more time to get better athletes and the results will come.Iowa has alot of hurdles to overcome and I think the biggest is our fanbase and whoever is responsible for the mourgue called CarverHawkeye arena. There are so many things that could be done with that place to turn it into a fun hostile environment that visiting teams would dread.

Fran started out selling hope, It has taken time but he now has a solid product to sell, he has built a very solid foundation. Recruiting has slowly and steadily improved IMO. It appears to me at least that every year we are getting in on better and better players, The team is getting more athletic and overall seems poised to continue to be a upper echelon Big team. So while this year has been somewhat frustrating with the up's and down's, I still tend to try and look at the big picture with the program, I still truly believe the program has a very bright future and is moving in the right direction. As with many fans I do think getting a real blue chip type PG would do wonders for the future, Maybe CW can be that player, I sure hope so, But I would still like to see a true PG added in the near future.

Better to have loved and lost than to have never have loved before. Don't be afraid to dream big.

what concerns me moving forward CONTINUES to be our rebounding efforts and giving up too many second chance points Lately we have been shooting poorly; when that happens, you have to rely on your D.

Giving up offensive rebounds means you are having to play defense for up to another 30 seconds, you risk 2nd chance points, and you are not allowing yourself to score on the other end.

A snapshot of the last 7 games (after our 10-1 start)

KM's remarks on how important rebounding and overall D are:

"They didn't box out today (vs OSU). It comes back to fundamentals. It comes down to closing down driving lanes, it comes down to who is going to hurt you from the perimeter. and its going to come down to boxing out. So, understanding the scouting report, taking away the lane, which they didn't do (vs OSU) and rebounding. Those THREE things; if they can do that, they'll be able to win."

"Unless you are the Golden State Warriers, you can't make your identity on offense. It's got to be on defense, rebounding and toughness."

Actually those rebounding numbers don't look bad to me and much better than I thought. Iowa is not a physical team and Woody is really the only true rebounder. I don't think rebounding is the problem, or it's a minor one. It's breakdowns on defense where Iowa gives up easy buckets, and then an offense that is too often stagnant, little to no ball movement. Then you have poor shooting, especially by everyone not name Jok or Uthoff.

One thing I do remember about the Dr Tom's teams: year after year they were one of the top rebounding teams (in differential) in the nation. That's why all of the offensive rebounds and 2nd chance points we give up I believe are going to bite us in the butt.

If you get stops AND THE REBOUND, you have more chances on the offensive end. However, we are giving up too many easy 2nd chance put backs and then when you add in that we have been struggling shooting the ball, its' no wonder we went on that losing streak.

Yeah, we're into Fran's 6th year and the natives are restless. Still, you have to remember the hole he had to dig out of. Yeah, I sometimes question his coaching decisions, but I've been a YUGE Iowa fan for over 60 years and I have questioned decisions of every coach during that time. At least during the time that all the games were televised so I could see what they were doing wrong. Personally, I think Fran has done a helluva job of rebuilding a program from ashes and I look forward to the future. If I live long enough.

Poor rebounding is especially prevalent when Dom is in the game. He likes to watch what is happening to the ball at the rim, instead of putting a body on someone. Watch the replays. It is maddening how often the other team gets offensive rebounds AT THE RIM with him in the game and Woody out.

Other teams guards also outrebound our guards, because it seems Sapp and Mike have not gotten the idea that some of the other teams 3-point tries bounce Way away from the hoop. They do not box out anyone and it seems to me like they don't feel that is part of their responsibility. If/when they do and Dom starts putting a body on people, then we will be a better rebounding team. Not a lot of time left to correct these habits, though...

Agree with this. Dom does a poor job of putting a body on someone and boxing out. He's looking at the ball and not focused on boxing a man out.
