You can't show up a ref and the Fran stare down clearly was close to crossing that line. Pfeifer was a pro holding his emotions.

Did he take the first steps to close the gap between the two of them? He certainly could’ve been going to the table or another official or whatever so not saying he was escalating the state down but just wondering.

I’d rather he just, you know, not be a terrible official. No one is here to see a ref show. Once refs figure this out all sports will be better.

Tony tapped Fran to try to get him into the huddle. Fran stepped forward after that, maybe because he thought they needed more room? Then the ref stepped forward to close the gap
Absolutely stupid and childish look for Fran. But the ref stepping forward sure seemed like he was trying to turn the heat up a bit to see if Fran would do nothing to draw another T. I know they aren’t robots, but I want them to do their best to be that way instead of reacting to an instigation and trying to escalate a situation during the game. It is the same thing that people generally want from cops, to de-escalate conflict rather than see how far it can go.
If you read his lips I think Fran was complementing him on his reffing and inviting him for a beer after the game. Very collegial.
