LB for next year thought...

Theres a huge difference between a bust and a player who needs time to develop...which is most of them. If you came back you were never a bust based on the definition of the word as i understand it. Josh jackson was opposite of a bust even though he didnt contribute much til his 4th yr...........Done...:)
I was hoping you would get the joke. there are many on here who I don't think would.

Will Honas offered by Wisconsin. I am guessing this means Edwards is going pro. Question will be whether he visits them or not since he is signing in two days.

Don't know how he was offered since this a DEAD period before signing on the 20th. Any comment Blair ? Thanks for your hours and hours of hard work.

“Bust”? Hyperbole much? Akrum Wadley was pretty much a bust fr year too is just one example to consider.

A guy sees the field for a lot of snaps in his freshmen year and now he is a bust. My goodness. Smith seeing the field this year will pay dividends the next 2-3 years. He has some physical tools, next year he, Smith-Marsette and Cooper will be in a much better position to contribute.

A true freshman making the 2 deeps is excelling, not 'busting'. And 90% of the people on here DID NOT think he was 'the best thing ever'. Just a handful of idiots, like yourself, who run their ignorant mouths off constantly and who think every recruit with a little talent is going to walk in the door and be a starter and uproot experienced starters, etc. Doesn't anyone experience embarrassment and shame anymore? They are good emotions. They keep people from acting and saying things like you do.
Umm .... Beavis ...... ummmm ... I think we might just have a case of friendly fire here. Fire ... fire ... fire ...

Strike that, you're right, I am an idiot!

In my infinite football wisdom I'll go ahead and help Phil out and set the starting group. Niemann, Welch, Jones.

If they want to move a safety to outside linebacker, then why not just put Djimon Colbert there? He has safety experience but now plays LB. Why teach a new guy the position when there's someone who's already played safety but moved to linebacker? Either way, I think if we get Honas, it should be Honas, Welch and Niemann, but if we don't then Welch, Mends, Niemann

Is this talk of an extra safety in certain scenarios and moving a safety to the olb spot the same thing.

This would be very much welcomed after being made to look stupid in the last few bowl games.
I don't stand up for Niemann or Bower very often, I've usually been fairly critical, but be fair, a lot of those struggles were offensively
yes please. Maybe Snyder too or instead??!!
I agree on Snyder. With Stone and Hooker at the safeties I think that would make the most sense, but that might just be me. They seem to like Gervase and at this point, I'm not going to question their depth chart moves

Sounds like they plan to start going with a true safety type player at the 3rd LB spot as a regular change. That is huge. Should lead to more athletic LB's at BOTH outside positions over time. love it
Wouldn't having an undersized linebacker be a fear in the run game?

From how I had read it, it sounded like that was more of a package-deal to respond to more pass-heavy personnel and/or pass-heavy schemes. It doesn't seem to indicate that it's trying to impact our long-term personnel for our base defense.

In said package deal would a safety already in the game move up into coverage? Does this mean the olb comes out of the game and if so do we trot another safety back where say Hooker was?

Actually he did mention Hockaday competing with Welch and also mentioned Jones maybe being able to play MLB as well.
Good to know. I've heard some good things about Jack since he's been in the program I thought it was weird I didn't see him mentioned in those tweets.

Iowa loses some damn good linebackers next year but I think people will be pleasantly surprised with the younger guys stepping up. Especially if we land Honas.

My question is "Does that change if Will Honas signs?"
Of course it does ... because the Hawks can only remark about guys who are on campus NOW. Supposing Honas signs ... that would give the LB unit a shot in the arm of "instant experience" ... and game experience and the leadership and instincts it cultivates can be pretty invaluable. Assuming that Honas is as good as folks seem to think he could be ... he'd definitely be in the convo for a starting spot. Given Iowa's scheme, given that we graduated BOTH of our top 2 LEOs .... we're not only lacking starters at our 2 ILB spots (MIKE and WILL) ... but our LEO spot is completely an unknown. Thus, depending on how Honas picks up our D ... and depending on where he finds a fit ... there is nothing but opportunity for him at Iowa.
