My instincts here, are that this is entirely related to "frontline" and "essential" workers in jobs where they are given no protections against the virus. And rather than any actual "race" factor, the reality is that when you get a large viral dose (either in one exposure, or continuous viral exposure over time - like what occurred in the meatpacking plants), you are toast. High viral intake overwhelms your system so fast, you're just basically screwed.
Smaller doses - when wearing masks or getting tiny exposure outdoors you end up with a much different disease that does not affect your entire body. And thus, really minimal protections of masks, etc would have saved a lot more people IF the companies who employed these folks were required to provide adequate PPE. Any company which did not should have execs and managers prosecuted for it. Hang 'em all.
