Anybody else choose not to use it because it can ruin your concrete?

Never used it. Have a bag of sand that I toss on the sidewalk up to my house if it is too bad, but keep your sidewalk clean and the sun will take care of the ice. or one of these also works:

Ice melt is fine to use. Do not use rock salt. It doesn't matter how old the concrete is, rock salt will ruin it.

I got one similar to this:

Had local welding shop beef up the handle connection (not made for ice chopping, so w/o a beefier handle attachment, you'll eventually bust the handle off). But the thin steel blade cleans the thicker ice/snow off like butter.

Won't work for thin ice sheets; need ice melt for that, but these will prevent those ice sheets from forming from layers of snow your shovel cannot scrape off.
