Hi Hawks. Sorry for your loss yesterday. Just thought i'd drop by and tell you a little bit about Rutgers, to hopefully help you forget about it.
  • Chris Ash, former Buckeye DC, is our Head Coach who is doing a terrific job, given what he was dealt.
  • His assistants for the most part are in the first year at the Big Ten Level
  • I consider ourselves to be in Year 1 of an Expected 5 Year Building Program. Offensive and Defensive Schemes are completely New
  • Our QB is below average to average, and I think i'm being charitable here
  • Our OL has ceiling for growth and they are trying to get better every game
  • Our RB's could be the Best in the Big Ten
  • Our WR's have the talent to be solid, but need to get better.
  • Our TE's are solid
  • Our DL is probably the best unit on the team
  • Our LB's are very green, and prone to mistakes
  • Our DBs are solid but have a penchant for giving up big plays
We are currently 2-1. Got drubbed by a very good Washington Team in a tough environment, and solidly beat two less than spectacular opponents the last two weeks. I think we are playing much better now, then week 1, and thats due to coaching.

No doubt the DL is the strength of the team. Led by NFL prospect and All Big Ten candidate, Darius Hamilton, the DL has played pretty well the first three games. Darius had 10 tackles in yesterdays game, and his linemate, defensive end Julian Pinnix Odrick had 12 tackles to go along with 2 sacks. The LB corp features 3 first time starters and they've made their share of mistakes, but they've also displayed great potential. The secondary has been solid, but they have also been prone to giving up the big play. Coach likes to gamble and likes to play a lot of Man-Man, so our guys have been burned from time to time. The secondary also needs to do a better job tackling.

The offense has great potential, but has had trouble getting out of its own way at times. Chris Laviano is the starting qb, but has struggled the first three games. The fanbase has been pining for his replacement since last season. When he's playing well, Rutgers has a decent chance of putting up a good showing, such as when we lost close to Michigan State last year. Too many times, he's been plagued by inconsistency, however, and provided less than spectacular results. On the bench is a super frosh by the name of Tylin Odin, who I think has Lamar Jackson potential. Doubt they throw him out to the wolves before the Illinois game, however, so it looks like laviano for now.

Robert Martin heads the RB corp, and I think he will be playing in the NFL someday. Yesterday, he had a breakout performance, rushing for over 160 yards, including an 80 yarder he took to the house. i'm hopeful that his performance is a sign of greater things to come. He's backed up by Josh Hicks, who runs with significant power. Between the two of them, its as good a 1-2 back combo you'll see in the Big Ten.

Janarion Grant is our most productive wr, and one of the most exciting players in the Big Ten. Whenever he gets the ball in his hands, he is a threat to take it to the house, whether as a wr, or as a returner. Another wr we have is Juwuan Harris, who is exceptionally fast, and took a ball to the house yesterday. Andre Patton goes 6-3 220, and is an especially effective threat inside the redzone.

Its clear to me that Iowa is a far more established program than we are at this point. I've always admired your fanbase's penchant for showing up to bowl games and I admire your coach as well. For Rutgers to have a chance, we're going to need our qb to step it up and minimize turnovers, and we're going to need to run the ball and control the clock. If we don't, we will likely see results similar to our games against Wisconsin and Nebraska, which got ugly early.

If you're travelling to the game, i would suggest you:

- Stay in Times Square NY, if you can $$$$$
- Visit Central Park NYC
- Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
- Eat at Carmines in NYC
- Eat at Wolfgangs steakhouse in NYC
- Visit Atlantic City, NJ if you have time
- Eat at Portugese restaurants in the ironbound section of Newark

Wait did you just suggest eating at Carmine's and Wolfgang's?!

Might as well eat at Ruby Tuesday's in Time square

He also suggested staying in Times Square.

I have to assume he made a mistake in what he wrote. Could be English is his second -or third- language.

I know people stay in TS. I hate that they come to Ny and think It is representative of the city.

I will be at the game this Saturday. Hoping to see a much different team from yesterday.

Hitting the bars Friday and Saturday. Where's a good place near campus to go for fans in their 30s? Any places to avoid? Any good eats in or around campus?

Golden Rail, Olde Queens Tavern, and Scarlet Pub are all located on Easton Avenue in New Brunswick, closeby to campus, and usually have lots of people. For a more upscale experience, you can try the Harvest Moon on George Street and the Hyatt on Albany Street also has a sports bar.

Make sure you try a FatCat Sandwich, which can be found on grease trucks throughout the college avenue campus.

Chris Ash, is he the former Drake coach?
Yes: player and coach for Drake. We've got a bit of Iowa blood sprinkled throughout the staff. O-Line coach, AJ Blazek, was a former captain at Iowa. Good teacher and high-energy guy.

The D-Coordinator was also Ash's coach at Drake: Jay Neimann. Another Iowa-born coach.

As a Hawkeye fan, I very much worry about this game. KF will easily get outcoached vs your new staff.

At your place, if you get some early momentum, you will getting a W.
That and Rutgers will sell out on beating Iowa because it's the first meeting, Iowa went 12-2 last year and they want a signature win early in the season. When KF and Iowa see that this is what Rutgers is trying to do, they simply let it happen.

Don't you think Campbell and the clowns wanted a signature win last week? How'd that work out for them?

The rest of this season is going one of two directions for the Hawks. Rutgers is either going to get completely destroyed on Saturday or the are going to beat Iowa. I have no idea which will happen.

he's from Ottumwa iowa

Therein, lies a problem for us. We have been totally outplayed in the first quarters of all three games. Gave up 24pts. to Washington and then 14 and 21 to the next two teams.
Although we did come back to win the last two, this team is really not built to keep doing this.
I think if you guys come out and put up some early points, you are good enough to keep us from taking the game away from you.

You're very gracious. Iowa fans have seen plenty of upset losses to "lesser" opponents on the road over the decades. We're completely capable of losing this game. If we're going to salvage the season, this one has to be a W. I think we'll see the Hawks play with a much greater sense of urgency than we saw on Saturday. If not, it will be a long year for Iowa.

That's Rob Ash. His cousin is actually a good friend of mine. Rob was head coach at Montana State and is now coaching under Bielema at Arkansas.

Chris Ash is from Ottumwa, played football at Drake, graduated from Drake, and coached at both Drake and Iowa State, along with SDSU. Wisconsin, Arkansas and Ohio State. He also has an assistant from Iowa in A.J. Blazek, so there is a solid Iowa connection to the Rutgers program. Could be worse?

I know Chris personally. He is a tireless worker and recruiter. He obviously is very familiar with facing Iowa and being from Iowa, this game will have a lot of very personal meaning for him. That is what probably scares me the most about this game.

I'm with you on this one ... I don't know what the NDSU loss will do to us mentally. I could see us coming out and winning convincingly ... Or I could see us folding and losing a close one.

If Iowa is truly what I think they are this year, I would really hate to be Rutgers this week. If we are in fact "a good team" this will be a beat down.....if our confidence is shaky it will be closer than we would all like. I hope to god daniels and wadley each get 10+ carries before the 1st half ends

Unfortunately, beating Iowa is not a signature win for anyone.........including NDSU. :)

BTW, Rutgers team not very good, I wouldn't worry too much about this game, we have two weak wins, got blown out by Washington and no QB.
Nice invitation -- hopefully some Hawk fans take you up on it. If there's one thing Iowa fans do well, it's drink beer. Ask the bars in Indy who literally ran out of certain beers last December when the Hawks were in town for the B10 championship game.

As for Rutgers, Iowa fans know all too well that the Hawks have a rich history of getting upset on the road. Iowa isn't anywhere close to being able to take anyone for granted. I think we'll see an inspired effort from the Hawks on Saturday, but this is far from a "gimme" for Iowa.

I am sure Gary Barta and Gene Taylor will give your athletic directory anything he wants in return for a steak.

In all seriousness take this word of advise. Last two times I went to Harvest Moon I got the runs that would make a goose proud. Definitely either dirty tap lines or something but if you have any intention of having fun after the game, and I don't mean by sitting on the nearest toilet, then find a better place to drink. Lots of good recommendations in this thread.

For the sake of your digestive system, stay away.

And if you don't return Akrum Wadley, you may not make it back to Iowa !
Forggedaboutit !

Hey guys, besides being self-loathing fans of your team after a rough game what are your serious strengths and weaknesses? on SiriusXM today I heard you have some injuries on the OL. Will those guys be back this week? Also, sounds like you had some trouble defending the run and also running yourselves, why was that? Last but not least on XM, some iowa fans called in saying that NDSU had a ton of success blitzes and bringing pressure I'd imagine that's in part due to the injuries on the OL, no?

Our starting center and right guard were out for the game but are expected back this week. I'm hoping those guys will make a big impact in the tempo of the game.

NDSU showed defensive alignments that looked favorable for Iowa to run to the weak side all day. When we checked into the run NDSU run blitzed those areas, they totally out schemed us on that front. We could not establish any sort of run game the entire game.

Whenever we went to pass either beathard missed the throw, wr's dropped the pass, or the defense got through the line to beathard. I believe if we would have tried to pass more we would have moved the ball a little bit better though.

As far as our defense in the last game, they were on the field way too long. With our offense getting 4 second half first downs our D was gassed by the 4th quarter which is when NDSU started to be able to move the ball on our defense. Our D line started getting gassed so we sent run blitzed with our lbers and they over pursued the ball constantly.

The whole game felt like if 1 or 2 things came together for the offense we would have pulled ahead by a couple of scores, but we never could. NDSU stuck around and beat us up in the 4th. I'm praying for a more consistent gane by Iowa all around the rest of the year.
