Let me tell you about Rutgers

I know Chris personally. He is a tireless worker and recruiter. He obviously is very familiar with facing Iowa and being from Iowa, this game will have a lot of very personal meaning for him. That is what probably scares me the most about this game.

Great. Another coach with personal connections and extra incentive to win. Just when you think we have reached the threshold.

ATTN: IOWA FANS in NJ. After game party at Harvest Moon Brewery/Cafe for all Hawkeye fans! We're a block from train station in heart of downtown New Brunswick. Iowa drink specials all day/night and local craft beers from our own Iowa raised Head Brewer Kyle McDonald.

BTW, Rutgers team not very good, I wouldn't worry too much about this game, we have two weak wins, got blown out by Washington and no QB.

Yeah, take this with the same grain of salt as "Stay in Times Square & eat at Carmines"

Do yourself a favor & go across the street to Hub City Tap House.

Iowa, I personally would NOT go to Harvest Moon. Food is THAT bad. Plenty of local places that are MUCH better, imho. Anyway, safe travels and here's to an injury free game. Go RU!

Lol at Harvest Moon courting visiting fans because no local fans would ever go there before a game.

Iowa Fans:
Your best bets are simple:

College bars: These are all on Easton Avenue. They are doable in the afternoon, early evening to get the experience. Late night they are slammed. Olde Queens is the famous one. Off Easton Ave is the Olive Branch, which is also a good spot.

Upscale, 30 something crowd: George Street in New Brunswick. Too may options to list. Harvest Moon is on the corner. I would go to Harvest Moon, not walk inside, and stop at the other bars as you make you way up toward the Heldrich Hotel. If you are a big beer drinker and have never been to a World of Beer, its a great place to get drunk. There are many others on or near George Street.

It's well known that Harvest Moon solicits hooker piss as an additive during fermentation.

I'm not saying "don't go there", but... ya know...

Hooker piss.

Hi Hawks. Sorry for your loss yesterday. Just thought i'd drop by and tell you a little bit about Rutgers, to hopefully help you forget about it.
  • Chris Ash, former Buckeye DC, is our Head Coach who is doing a terrific job, given what he was dealt.
  • His assistants for the most part are in the first year at the Big Ten Level
  • I consider ourselves to be in Year 1 of an Expected 5 Year Building Program. Offensive and Defensive Schemes are completely New
  • Our QB is below average to average, and I think i'm being charitable here
  • Our OL has ceiling for growth and they are trying to get better every game
  • Our RB's could be the Best in the Big Ten
  • Our WR's have the talent to be solid, but need to get better.
  • Our TE's are solid
  • Our DL is probably the best unit on the team
  • Our LB's are very green, and prone to mistakes
  • Our DBs are solid but have a penchant for giving up big plays
We are currently 2-1. Got drubbed by a very good Washington Team in a tough environment, and solidly beat two less than spectacular opponents the last two weeks. I think we are playing much better now, then week 1, and thats due to coaching.

No doubt the DL is the strength of the team. Led by NFL prospect and All Big Ten candidate, Darius Hamilton, the DL has played pretty well the first three games. Darius had 10 tackles in yesterdays game, and his linemate, defensive end Julian Pinnix Odrick had 12 tackles to go along with 2 sacks. The LB corp features 3 first time starters and they've made their share of mistakes, but they've also displayed great potential. The secondary has been solid, but they have also been prone to giving up the big play. Coach likes to gamble and likes to play a lot of Man-Man, so our guys have been burned from time to time. The secondary also needs to do a better job tackling.

The offense has great potential, but has had trouble getting out of its own way at times. Chris Laviano is the starting qb, but has struggled the first three games. The fanbase has been pining for his replacement since last season. When he's playing well, Rutgers has a decent chance of putting up a good showing, such as when we lost close to Michigan State last year. Too many times, he's been plagued by inconsistency, however, and provided less than spectacular results. On the bench is a super frosh by the name of Tylin Odin, who I think has Lamar Jackson potential. Doubt they throw him out to the wolves before the Illinois game, however, so it looks like laviano for now.

Robert Martin heads the RB corp, and I think he will be playing in the NFL someday. Yesterday, he had a breakout performance, rushing for over 160 yards, including an 80 yarder he took to the house. i'm hopeful that his performance is a sign of greater things to come. He's backed up by Josh Hicks, who runs with significant power. Between the two of them, its as good a 1-2 back combo you'll see in the Big Ten.

Janarion Grant is our most productive wr, and one of the most exciting players in the Big Ten. Whenever he gets the ball in his hands, he is a threat to take it to the house, whether as a wr, or as a returner. Another wr we have is Juwuan Harris, who is exceptionally fast, and took a ball to the house yesterday. Andre Patton goes 6-3 220, and is an especially effective threat inside the redzone.

Its clear to me that Iowa is a far more established program than we are at this point. I've always admired your fanbase's penchant for showing up to bowl games and I admire your coach as well. For Rutgers to have a chance, we're going to need our qb to step it up and minimize turnovers, and we're going to need to run the ball and control the clock. If we don't, we will likely see results similar to our games against Wisconsin and Nebraska, which got ugly early.

If you're travelling to the game, i would suggest you:

- Stay in Times Square NY, if you can $$$$$
- Visit Central Park NYC
- Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
- Eat at Carmines in NYC
- Eat at Wolfgangs steakhouse in NYC
- Visit Atlantic City, NJ if you have time
- Eat at Portugese restaurants in the ironbound section of Newark

I think this will be a much tougher game than most people believed before the season started.

What time do the bars open for college game days? Hoping to her after it by 8am. Also how far of a waslk from the places you mentioned to the stadium?

I don't think the bars open before noon, with the possible exception of Olde Queens Tavern (check the websites and see if they give any info). The stadium is about a mile to a mile-and-half from the places listed. Your best bet is to go to the tailgates and hang with the Rutgers folks, most of whom will offer you food and drink.

Please do not take the OP recommendations on restaurants in NYC!!!!

Enjoy the game. Iowa is a program that many of us RU fans have longed to duplicate. You've had a team I've rooted for for a long time. I know you're upset about last week - as I would be - but congrats on your program and tradition and enjoy the game.

Unfortunately, I agree. Suddenly, RU is looking at this game as a very winnable one. They now see Iowa as vulnerable. No doubt, RU got a confidence boost from last Saturday's debacle in Kinnick. I think this makes Saturday's game more of a challenge. If the Hawks don't take control early, they'll have a real fight on their hands. Gotta look at this game as an opportunity for redemption and attack from the start. If we go conservative and start playing not to lose, we'll lose.

I think the key for both teams is to establish the running game. Rutgers lacks Iowas depth, but the talent should be competitive. Agree with the notion that Iowa needs to establish control early. If that doesn't happen, and Rutgrs is in the game in the 3rd quarter, then anything can happen.

Whatever u do, dont go to Harvest Moon. Unless you want dysentery and a raging case of the Herp. Place sucks.

I have no idea what will happen Saturday but the huge problem RU has at QB doesn't bode well for the Knights.

I just want to say how neat it is to have Iowa at HPSS. We're in year 3 now but I'm still at the point where every time an old school B1G team visits RU for the 1st time it's a big thrill.

Wishing every Iowa fan who attends a great trip. Looking forward to some fun interaction and a great game.

For anyone coming to the game on Saturday definitely hit the lots around the stadium for the tailgate scene. Most people are super friendly and will offer up food and drinks. The RU tailgate scene is highly underrated. Check out the Scarlet, Yellow and Blue lots for the best tailgate crews.
The bar and resturant scene in New Brunswick is varied and quite impressive. Check out Easton ave for the undergrad scene and George for more upscale and "mature" options.
Every fan base that has visited Rutgers was suprised and impressed how good out game day was. Have fun and good luck!

Looking forward to Saturday down at Rutgers. Very happy to have both Maryland and Rutgers in the BIG as nearby venues to see the Hawks play. Maryland was a great road trip and am expecting the same this weekend.

Honestly. If you liked the Maryland game and lack of tailgate scene you will love Rutgers. And that's coming from my wife a Maryland grad.

One of the many reasons I find this game interesting is in many ways, Iowa is what Rutgers aspires to be:

- both don't get tons of five stars, but try to get players appropriate to the system they're running
- Iowas fan support and ability to travel to bowl games is something we aspire to
- both teams feature what I would term tough blue collar players
- Iowa has been to a number of bowl games over a long period of time
- Iowa has been to BCS bowls

From reading some of the Rutger posts seems like the game is just something you do between the tailgating. :)

Not necessarily a bad thing.

You know that feeling you had after the loss on Saturday?

Now picture feeling that after every game.

That's what being a Rutgers fan was like for most of the 90s & early 00s.

So 60's and 70's Iowa football. Luckily I wasn't old enough to witness it first hand.

Thank you for taking the time to write up such a thorough review.

I'm starting to get a bad "2014 Maryland" vibe to this game. I would hope the players would respond from Saturday with fire and pound Rutgers. But . . . that's a rare sight with this program.

It's amazing to me that so many programs cite Iowa as a team to copy. Why? So you can go 7-5 most years and play scared?

The best bet for Iowa fans is not to go there at all. I am sure the ones there are expats living in the East.

that used to be the case, but hasn't been the case since 2005, which is when we started fielding mostly competitive teams. People are down because the QB hasn't been performing well, and as you know, its difficult to win without a good qb. But I'm hoping that he will play much better or be replaced. so we'll see. The rest of the team is mostly competitive but the qb position is the 800 lb gorilla in the room.

It was the single worst sporting horror of my entire life. I actually during the last Commings year thought that Iowa would never have a winning record in my entire lifetime. Words just plain cannot describe how bad Iowa was that era. They'd get standing ovations for 1st downs whenever OSU and UM came to town.

Here's the short story of that era. Opening Iowa drive. 1st down, run up the gut with a 2 yard loss. 2nd down, run up the gut for a yard. 3rd down, run up the gut for 2 yards.

Iowa punts, the other team drives for a TD. Rinse, repeat until the game is effectively over by halftime, and they begin to put their 2nd and 3rd teamers in. Iowa then gets their lone score of the game.

The entire 70's was effectively exactly that. Iowa would get their wins by the other team's offense actually being worse than Iowa's.

For me, Iowa is a paradigm of solidity. Clean, players have good work ethic, making the most out of what they have, well coached, and terrific fan support.

I think anything can happen Saturday. Rutgers has enough talent to win, but do we have the level of execution. Thats the million dollar question for me.

My hope is that we don't execute ourselves.

What do they do with the hookers after they've extracted the piss? Askin' for a friend.....;)

There's an "ethnic food store" in the neighborhood west of George St. that sells 4 oz. bags of "Dessicated Hooker". I have no idea what that's about. Last time I was in the neighborhood I damn near caught a bullet.
