Little brother not so little anymore?

"Crazy" is a term that has truly very little real meaning in the context of this discussion. isu has recently sold men's season football and basketball tickets for as little as $99 to $125 for the season. It does not take much to say that "ticket prices were crazy" in comparison.
Look, I was crazy to respond to 100; must have thought the name change would make somethingt different. A mistake I won't make again. I don't put him on "ignore" because he's amusing. But I should know better than to feed him.

I entered this thread because it was erroneously stated that Iowa outdrew ISU in men's basketball last season, when in fact that was not the case, nor has been the case for 7 of the past 10 years. Nor has ISU done any free ticket promotions, as Iowa has.

I mentioned the balcony because we were talking about ticket prices. If you want tickets elsewhere, you first must donate $12,500 a year to the Cyclone Club. There were a few fans last year who donated at that level but were still put in the balcony. A lot of the rest are grandfathered, but I don't think there are any season ticket holders in the parquet or arena circle who give less than $5,000 a year. I am pretty sure the situation at CHA is not even remotely similar.

I don't know offhand the numbers for revenues. I assume Iowa's are greater because Iowa gets more money from the BiG than ISU gets from the Big XII.

I have no idea where the 90,000 figure came from. Maybe somebody mentioned it in another post and I just didn't see it. I think capacity of the Jack now will be in the neighborhood of 60 or 61K. I am sure season ticket sales for this season are down from last season, for obvious reasons.

Iowa's athletics department has a vastly larger budget than ISU's. I don't know anyone who would dispute that.

The Burrito Lift and Delta Dental smile cam are two scoreboard commercials that are interactive with fans. The Burrito Lift shows a burrito graphic overlayed over fan shots who are encouraged to "lift" the burrito by pumping their arms. The smile cam shows people who are smiling.

The Burrito Lift is very popular at the games, more popular than it should be, but the b1tches on the internet act like its killing the atmosphere.

Kinnick Stadium is exactly what it used to be, a giant hunk of concrete and metal. But old crusty b1tches are no longer buying tickets, because they're rather complain on the internet.

Upgrade, for sure. But lets wait and see how many people are in the seats in mid to late October when the losses start piling up and they aren't playing the in state teams. And yes I'm sure some clone fan will come and argue seats bought but I'm talking about actual attendance when you can see open seats on TV. Build something new and shiny people will show for that first season but after that good luck the year after. Maybe new coach can lure some excitement in 2016 to keep people coming back.

Why wait? I can tell you now: Not very freaking many. If the team is sucking and the weather is bad, I'd be surprised if there are 30K in the seats at kickoff late in the year.

I would say, however, that the past two seasons have been the biggest in season ticket sales in history, I'm pretty sure, and there was nothing new and shiny.

Also, historically the only way to figure attendance was ticket sales, and because of that, if you're going to do comparisons, that's the standard you have to use. A much more accurate number is available now that they scan the tickets when you enter. I'm sure they keep that, but I don't know if they ever announce it.

And conversely if Iowa gets................ well............anybody, as a Head Coach the results may be considerably different. Given Iowa has every single advantage known to man over Iowa State when it comes to Football.
Thank goodness that day will be coming sooner rather than later.

Had a LSU fan tell me it "feels like" you are in Arkansas' stadium(don't confuse with looks like) when I took him a couple weeks ago. I like both stadiums for different reasons but the SEZ expansion is very impressive and its impact can't really be felt until one is inside. Kinnick has the whole "historical" thing goin but, like most things at U of I campus, the achitecture looks forced in areas. iSu definitely has a more modern look.

As far as iSu vs iowa...well iowa fans are as apethetic about football as they have ever been in my lifetime. iSu has a chance to take advantage of that and for once it won't be because the iSU administration isn't willing to support athletics. Of course, iSu needs to win on the field. I think it says a lot that season ticket sales are going to be close this year and iSu has come off of 5-19 the last two seasons.

I feel for iowa fans. I absolutely hate the idea of mega conferences and your schedule is exactly why. Throw in difficult to find taligating areas that continue to get eaten up and overbearing police and it doesn't surpise me the season ticket sales are dropping.
That is one ugly stadium. I have seen nicer high school stadiums.

2-10 says isu is really taking advantage of Iowa's apathy. Only at isu would 2-10 allow a coach to keep his job as long as one of the 2 wins is against Big Brother.

Hey maybe Iowa should sell football season tickets for $99.00 and then turn around claim a record number of sales. Wait I know we can track the sales with a thermometer. Then we can be just like isu.

Who would laugh at that?
I'll break this down so it isn't confusing.
  1. apathy with iowa- I grew up a hok fan and lived in eastern iowa. I have a daughter that attends iowa and isn't getting season tickets nor are many of her friends after having tickets for three years. There is apathy right now and season ticket sales show that. Blame it on mediocre results against poor competition, a poor home schedule, reduced tailgating, over zealous police or all of the above but it is there. I am not sure if you are denying it but it is real. There have been times when iSu could have taken advantage and simply did not. Most of those were due to admins not supporting athletics particularly back int he early hayeden days. That is not the case right now. The football program has complete support from the admin. Now they have to do it on the field. I bolded that for you because I originally stated there is an opportunity and nowhere stated nor implied that iSu was taking advantage. Again, for clarification, it is an opportunity
  2. I would like to see those $99 season football tickets. Where can I get those? Are those hillside or can I actually get a seat?

No, you haven't and to state that is assinine.

If you are talking architecturally...well that is subjective and guessing if you like the architecture on the U of I campus, I will take that into consideration. But there is not a high school stadium with the capacity, the flow, the lines, the consistency in design and the amenities.

I think the Iowa fans asking for the numbers about revenue, prices etc. should not expect a clone fan to produce those, if the numbers are favorable which I would assume you know to be true since you brought it into the thread, remove the mystery and provide them. LC won't do it.

1. Football tickets and Season Football ticket sales are down across the country not just at Iowa. So isu fans can make the claim that you are but on the flip side an equally valid argument is that overall ticket sales are down in many venues which has absolutely nothing to do with fan apathy.

2. A $99 season ticket is still a $99 season ticket. Again I suppose Iowa could do that as well and then claim some bogus season ticket sales record just as isu has done. Just tell us when it is ok to do as isu and when it isn't.

Of course isu fans won't actually answer the questions. LC is no different. Facts only matter on certain things isu is currently doing well in and only for the select time periods isu fans say so.

Iowa tickets are obviously more expensive and even with attendance down Iowa has still gotten over 61K (the seating capacity for the new Jack Trice) for every game in probably the last decade or more dating back to KF's first few seasons. North Texas game this season maybe the first time in a long time they maybe flirting with getting below this figure.

As for point 1 as I stated even with dwindling tix sales Iowa has still managed over 61K with higher prices. Winning cures all but I won't disagree that Barta should be worried with the downward trend. As for tailgating and parking been issues with that for last 2 decades and police is a fabricated myth since 2010 when Sally Mason had her crackdown to stop Melrose from looking like the Vegas strip with everyone carrying open containers. Since then back to normal with police leaving you alone as long you aren't making a scene just like at most every other venue.

Before they got rid of the hillside seats that whats they were around $100. Had a friend get 3 for him and his 2 sons. Said wait till around then end of 1st qtr and for most games could wander into the stands and sit there rest of the game. But even with issues with ticket sales you offer $175 season tickets for Kinnick I think Iowa wouldn't have that issue with declining attendance right now heck even if it was at the next level up at $250. Plus you factor in at Kinnick you have the "donations" depending on seat location of $50, 200, 400 on top of the season ticket price.

I am claiming what I stated. Football ticket sales are down at places other than Iowa. How many other schools to I need to post to prove this is occurring 5, 10, 30? What will make the cut? Or once I supply that will it change yet again?

If you are looking for two more season tickets to isu just call and ask for them I am sure they will take your money. Yep maybe Iowa should say the mini packs are really season tickets and then we can puff out our chest for selling a record number. Then we can be just like isu.

I think the OP was talking about worrying about now and the future not what happened five years ago. Hence the reason they mentioned the SEZ expansion. So I think ticket sales this year and going forward are more pertinent to the discussion. With an expanded alumni base due to increased enrollment which leads to a younger alumni base, the growing population of the Des Moines area, a poor home schedule for iowa, the aging of a lot of iowa's season ticket holders, etc,and mediocre results against a weak schedule... iSu has great potential.

Whether they take advantage or not remains to be seen. In the past, iSu has stepped on their unit. for example...the hiring of Criner instead of Cooper. BVD being a tight AD during the early DMac years, etc. Those opportunities come around once every 20 years and iSu needs to take advantage like iowa did with the hiring of Hayden.

Did Jaimie market season tickets.....hell yes he did. I don't see an issue with it. I think it was pretty damn smart. He made attending an iSu game a family affair. The Lil' Cyclone club was brilliant! You get your kids in for dirt cheap and it builds a young fanbase. He allowed parents to get cheaper tickets and bring their family for a day because he understands that parents aren't going to give up six Saturdays with the kids. Kids grow up attending games and tailgating and continue that as they get older. Fans for life. The long term payback is HUGE compared to the short term discounts. He has gradually raised prices as well. I keep asking for the $99 ticket but no one tells me where I can find one. I don't think $99 season tickets have been avaliable for years but maybe hillsides are available. The man understands his market. Good for him and good for iSu.

Not sure why iSu fans need to apologize for the AD maximizing the market.

I think that is all anyone is saying. And they are falling at greater rates than national averages which should be a concern because Iowa fans have been very loyal. All the other reasons I listed are just reasons I have heard from hok fans.

iSu also has donation levels and they start at $100. There are a handful of sections that require no donation. I understand the ticket price. It should be expected. iSu does not consistently put out a winning team. Lower product value, lower cost tickets. At the same time, Pollard has done a great job of offering low cost options then increasing those in value. In four years the lowest cost season ticket has almost doubled. Parking passes require higher donations. Donation levels have increased to maintain tickets. All of that while having a losing product on the field. If iSu loses this year, I expect steady season ticket sales next year as fans will have hope with a new coach. If htye win then people will support Rhoads.

Donation levels for tickets are $100-$5000. A lower level 25 yard line ticket will cost you $1000 donation + $425 per ticket so it isn't like they are giving it away. I don't know what that seat will cost at iowa.

I just find it odd that people blast an AD for understanding his market, maximizing the market and growing revenue. To me it has bee a brilliant plan and has iSu moving in the right direction and poised to take advantage of results on the field if/when they happen.

They are own at a greater rate at iowa who has been a pretty loyal fanbase for 40 years, and has no pro competition.
Do you honestly think iowa's drop in ticket sales is NOT showing apathy amongst the fanbase?

So there are no $99 season tickets are there? Do me a favor and tell me when the last time iSu offered $99 season tickets. Because the OP is talking about going forward not living in the past.

I see you don't like to answer questions so let me make them very clear

  1. Are you claiming reduced season ticket sales have nothing to do with apathy from fans?
  2. Where can I get those $99 season tickets for iSu games?

Again Iowa sales are down just as sales are down across the nation. They are even down at schools with a lot more tradition than Iowa such as Michigan. I don't see why this is so hard for you to grasp.

I also find it hilarious that isu sells season tickets for $175 while Iowa has 3 game mini packs selling for close to the same. Should Iowa count those as season tickets sales? Hey maybe we can get a thermometer to show just how successful our discounted tickets are selling. Then we can have fans that can't think for themselves call it great marketing.

Or am I not reading you correctly tazz?

spazclone is correct, there are no $99 ISU season tickets. There are plenty of $175 public season tickets at ISU.

Iowa season tickets are $395, and Iowa student tickets are $175.

It all boils down to athletic department revenue. Most recent figures have Iowa 16th in the country at $106M. ISU 48th at $68M.

But isu is better because their AD "knows" his market better than Iowa does. isu sells season tickets for $175 and Iowa is worse because they sell 3 game packages for $157. isu fan logic is always good for a chuckle.

I honestly don't understand this. I answered the question -- except for MBB revenues, which I don't know, and in any case, I conceded Iowa has a much bigger budget than ISU, so I don't understand the point. I provided the phone number for the ISU ticket office, which should be the best source of information on ticket prices. It isn't like it's some kind of secret; I just don't have the numbers at hand and don't see the point of digging them up.

Maybe ticket prices are a mystery to you. Somehow, that doesn't surprise me as much as it might.

You will see that there are very few $175 football tickets. Those are limited to sections K and R, which are upper level in the extreme corners of the SW and SE stands.

Yet the $175 tickets exist. Should Iowa claim each every 3 game packaged sold as a season ticket since the cost for those packages are similar? Better yet not only should we count those discounted packages but then we should use a hokey thermometer to show just how well our discounted sales are going. As we all know from isu fans that keep telling us that is just great Marketing and an AD who truly "knows" his market.

LC, you missed my point which isn't a huge surprise. My comment was directed at the Iowa fans who vague posted about total revenue from tickets, telling them to just post the numbers rather than thinking someone else would look it up to prove their point.

The cheapest football season ticket is $175 in the upper deck of the new corner end zone. The highest priced tickets, excluding suites and the Jack Trice Club seats, are $750.

The cheapest basketball season ticket is $199 in the corner balcony seats. Only a few dozen season tickets were available to fill new season ticket requests. The highest priced tickets, excluding CourtCYd tickets, are $595.

You are correct that it looks better in person. Here's a recent photo.
CJFTOYjUkAEOmwd.jpg

ISU MBB has outdrawn Iowa in 7 of the past 10 seasons -- without giving away free tickets to students, as Iowa has done. And the reason they've drawn only 200 more than Iowa is, in large part, due to capacity.

What's interesting is the numbers for women's hoops. Iowa had one of its greatest seasons in history while ISU was below-par and disappointing....but ISU attendance was almost double that at Iowa City.

But in all fairness, I concede that there is no comparison between the field hockey and rowing teams.
Meh, nobody gives a f***. Iowa is better than Iowa State regardless. Accept it and move on.

Iowa doesn't have to stoop so low as to have different prices for season tickets for the general public. A season ticket costs the same regardless of where it is located in the stadium. The ability to purchase any seat in the stadium however comes with donation requirements in locations outside of the end zones.

With isu fans and their inability to grasp this simple concept it is no wonder they lag so far behind in AD revenue and income.

But keep trying to tell us how it really is clone fans. That is always a good for a few laughs.

Most sections of the football stadium also require a donation.

What does that have to do with isu discounting season tickets in sections to the general public? Iowa doesn't do that and yet isu fans can't grasp the difference.

Pretty simple really. Iowa has and always will exceed isu in athletics and as an institution as a whole. isu will always be second fiddle. I mean their last conference football championship was a co-championship for the 1912 MVC title with a 2-0-1 record.

Their ability to win their Super Bowl game does nothing but reinforce just how important the Iowa game is to "Little Brother". I can't think of one school that has a coach go 3-9 after 5 years on the job and follows that up with a 2-10 season and still keeps his job. Well unless of course one of the 2 wins is against big brother then of course he can keep his job.

But feel free to tell us how it really is. Let's see if you can do it without being selective in time frames or criteria though. My bet is no chance.

There is nothing more pathetic then using the "Super Bowl" excuse for routinely losing to one of the worst programs in the country.

"Crazy" is a term that has truly very little real meaning in the context of this discussion. isu has recently sold men's season football and basketball tickets for as little as $99 to $125 for the season. It does not take much to say that "ticket prices were crazy" in comparison.
  1. I said last year
  2. What do you consider recent history?

Not an excuse but a real fact. Again you are free to tell us how it really is but let's see if you can do it without limiting the criteria or time frame.

I am still betting you nor any isu fan for that matter can pull it off.
