SO Anderson hs North Gwinnett same HS as Goodson hopefully this will lead to more kids from there
SO Brown from OSU

these IMO look to be the top 6, wonder if the coaches are done or if they will get any other WR out of the portal.

Bostick if/when healthy will be up there, maybe Wick/Osgood/Johnson from the walkon group and the TR FR from Kansas when he gets here, but yes the above will be those getting the most PT.

Are any of those scholarship guys taller than 6'0?

Brown is a much needed get. But the offense still REALLY needs a large body who can fight off a press at the line of scrimmage. There is no one remotely built like Marvin McNutt in that room.

We have that large body. It is the 2nd TE in 2-TE sets that often gets split out wide. Fant and LaPorta, for example.

didn't list 6'2 RSFR Bostik nor did I list the incoming FR, 6'5 Howard out of KC Kansas and 6'3 Bui out of Tampa Florida.

would like to see them try to get 1 of these 2 to finish
SR 6'3 Wright 4* out of HS now out of Purdue
JR 6'4 Coleman 4* out of HS now out of MSU, put up these numbers this past season
58 catches, 798 yards, 13.8 ypc and 13 TD's and led the team last season.

either one would be a very solid addition

Would that be Sullivan or Wright from Purdue? They have had quite a few spring portal entries.

tF Alex Mota could make a splash IMO. Another tF, Dayton Howard, is a big WR at 6ft5. Keep an eye on these guys if injuries strike.

Yes, if you're Brian Ferentz.

Modern offenses still call them wide receivers: Davante Adams, Mike Evans, A.J. Brown, Allen Lazard, Mike Williams, DK Metcalf, Chase Claypool, Tee Higgins, Michael Thomas, etc. etc. etc.

Receivers of that caliber aren’t exactly common and the ones that are ready to play right away usually go to the bigger schools.

To be fair, Iowa has tried to recruit those types of receivers and develop them since they’re often recruited for potential. Coaches I think are aware of the problem but have come up short due to recruiting misses, transfers, etc.

Not a problem I see being solved so long as we’re in our style of offense.

I was looking at the tallest WR and 6'1 is pretty much the same across the group. it was nothing personal.
Iowa does not get the tall receivers that often,
We typically have at least one on the roster. Unfortunately, most of them haven't panned out in recent years. Last season, Brecht at 6'4" was the only tall guy available, and he was out for a few games. Others during the past few years include Hutson (6'4"), Lockett (6'2"), Smith (6'3"), and Marchese (6'3"; switched to DB), with Smith as the only one who played. Before that, we'd have to go back to Tevaun Smith, Jacob Hillyer, and Keenan Davis.

Brandon Smith?

In 2022 Iowa ran around 400 pass plays, although they only got 348 in the air, the rest sacks or lost fumbles. Number is approximated. Ran around 350 running plays (exclusive of sacks). Need to get the numbers of offensive plays up from like 59 per game to 75-80.

He’s the sort of receiver Iowa has tried to get for that type yeah. Problem has been correctly identifying them, developing them, and getting them on the field quickly. Iowa has in general seemingly been reluctant to play them as true freshman with some exceptions like Smith and ISM.

Are 6'2" and above WRs (McNutt was 6"4 I believe) with even serviceable speed for a P5 program that hard to find in 2023?

Is it almost as elusive to Iowa as the mobile Quarterback?...............

To find ones that are willing to wait for their opportunities and not want greater involvement sooner? Yes.

Which of course speaks to how coaches need to change their philosophy for the position. Virtually no receiver their scholarship is willing to wait 2-3 years before seeing the field and Iowa coaches need to relax this philosophy or production at the position will continue to be inconsistent.

Not just them. Bruce and Johnson started as true frosh in 2021. There are many instance before then as well, so WR is one position where FR and RS-FR have played and even started (not all tall WR, of course): Ragaini (2019), Tracy (2019), J. Smith (2015), VandeBerg (2014), T. Smith (2012), Martin-Manley (2011), etc. Even back in 2002 Hinkel and Solomon got a lot of snaps as WRs 3 and 4.

It’s definitely weird imo. Most of those you mentioned are smaller receivers. Rare is the big bodied receiver at Iowa that steps onto the field right away.

YOu forgot Wick. How can any of the new guys be ahead of Wick, our offense has been chronically above pro level IQ...

Yeah, and some of the taller guys who have played early are converted QBs, like Solomon and McNutt. And even if they do play it doesn't mean they produce. B. Smith saw the field but had no receptions his first season, as was the case with Scott Chandler.

Iowa will never average 75 to 80 plays per game under KF. No matter the improvement we're never going to be a uptempo chuck it down the field team....
