In his final career HS game, Maret C Luka Garza had arguably his most dominant putting in his HS career. The Iowa commit went for 37 points (15-24 FG/ 7-7 FT), 17 rebounds (9 offensive), 3 blocks, 2 assists,

Thank you Luka for choosing Iowa!

If I remember correctly, he's actually lost a bunch of weight the past year or so. He's played very well in some big-time tournaments. I think he'll be just fine.

Definitely plays below the rim but has some offensive savvy.
We seen below-the-rim play out of a 7-footer for 4 years so it wouldn't be nothing new. If he has the good hands and footwork as Pemsl has, he wont have to be a rim destroyer ala Aaron White. If he can create a defensive presence, challenge shots and rebound, it will help out alot.

He's quick, moves really well, and can shoot, but this is small- school ball, like Iowa's 1A or maybe 2A, with a really small crowd watching Maret's 10- point loss to little Gonzaga Catholic. This definitely is NOT inner-city Washington- Maryland public league basketball. I think he'll eventually be good at Iowa, but I don't look for him to impact immediately, like McCaffery will or even Nunge, both of whom play in a much, much tougher league. Nice to see him play, but I'm not sure that small Iowa private schools like Pella Christian or Western Christian wouldn't beat this team on any good night. Seeing him play against a GOOD AAU team would be more beneficial. The Prime-Time League and his freshman year at Iowa, with great coaching, will really help this kid grow quickly, I hope. He has the tools to be really good in the future when he has some muscle and develops some footwork.

Not sure it's quite fair to say he plays below the rim. He seems to prefer a soft touch. Couple times I thought he was high enough to dunk but rather guided the ball through the hoop. Not sure how this will work against bigger players. Will be fun to watch him.

It's been a long time since I played 1A ball in Iowa and a lot has changed if that is what the competition looks like.

To me Garza looks Woodbury+. I know Woody had a lot of big school interest. Garza looks smooth. If Cook stays I really like the bigs in 2 years with Garza as a sophomore and Cook, Pemsl and Kriener as juniors. JoBo will be a stud. The thing the team will be lacking is a SG so hopefully Moss develops.

Well they are/were both 4 stars with a lot of offers.

Anyway, who would want a 6 10 kid with a big frame that can shoot with some range and has a good ft stroke? Just because he's shined in AAU ball what makes anyone think that will translate? My guess this guy is just another in a long line of Fran misses when there are so many Lew Alcinder types dying to be Hawkeyes we could have had instead. Poor recruiting is why we never have any freshman contribute until they are juniors.

Did I do this right? I don't have much practice bashing Hawkeye recruits who have yet to put on the uniform.

Perfectly done! This is why we can't have nice things! I'm sure the combination of Garza, Nunge & Mccaffery will take us down a few notches. We should just red shirt all 3 now. Why wait & see what they can do, we got it all figured out.

Has a ways to go. No one in the video was half his size.

I love it when he's obviously schooling that black guy in the video only thing he can do is stare him down he just is like "I'm going to school you all game". One of my black friends told me in college that when a white guy in high school is beating you"brothers take so offense to that" he was one of my roommates in college, friend still to this day.

At the time I didn't understand why, but he mentioned that the couple times it happened, the player gets clowned on the next day at school.

I notice that in a lot of videos with really good white guys that get that same stare to I guess try to intimidate you but your not going to scare a 7 footer. When one of the other teams guard walks next to him he looks 2 feet taller than him. I was really surprised he choose Iowa, maybe adding the east teams will help in recruiting plus Fran being a east coast guy.

I see him as just a beast and an all-around player. He will be a much better player than woody he's more athletic and I've heard his swingspan is 7'3? Not 6'9 like woody.

Looking forward to seeing the 3 new guys next year, think we got a true center a 3/4 guy in nunge who's probably the next uttoff. And I think Connor will be a good backup PG/SG next year. I heard in August he was thinking of red shirting due to baseball, don't know if that's still true.

Then explain what else separates the two? Eyepokes?
Swingspan, Garza more athletic, better at blocks and rebounding due to higher swingspan and jumping. Much wider, woody was so skinny as a freshman. Garza has an outside game. Woody didn't.

I can't believe your serious there isn't a single thing that Garza reminds me of woody besides same skin color. Wow!!!!

CP84 I guess another thing both were/are 4 stars there ya go two things. I thought you were joking at first, you being serious amazes me. I bet Garza has atleast 50 pounds on woody from their senior years in high school.

He was 255lbs. as a 6'8" soph but was a plodder and had some injuries. he really worked hard to drop weight and work on agility and was down to 230lbs. last summer at 6'10" He's now putting on good weight and will likely play around 250lbs next year.

You have no clue what you are talking about. Gonzaga beat DeMatha and Paul VI to get to the D.C. tournament. Have you heard of them? Then in the tournament they beat Wilson who won the public school league. Every starter on Gonzaga is going D1. They may not have a 6'11 big but they can play and would win the 4A championship in Iowa easily.

Neither school is anywhere near 1A/2A sized. Maret has around 650 students, Iowa 3A sized, and Gonzaga has almost 1000 students, 4A sized. And that game won Gonzaga the DC City title, so yeah, they had both played against the best DC teams (Gonzaga is in the same conference as DeMatha). Both of these teams would be able to challenge the best 4A teams in Iowa, at least, and would likely give the best teams in IL a good game.

Just beat me to it.

7-7 from the FT Line is nice from a big.

Yes, he definitely is more skilled than Woody. He also is a little more athletici. He dunks with more ease and is quicker. He should be a solid player for us. I hope Garza or Nunge can be legitimate 3pt threats...we already have Pemsl and Cook in low post. Having a big that can make the other big come out to guard is going to help the offense.

An old thread, but for those worried about how Garza measures up to guys his size and talent.

And, I think we can get excited about a recruit, without creating undue expectations. Freshmen and immediate results are often strangers, especially with bigs.

Agreed Dan. The nice thing is Iowa doesn't NEED him to be good/great next year. If he is ready to contribute, a huge, huge bonus. I don't understand the bashing of a guy before he ever steps on campus. I really don't. After they arrive for that matter as well. Garza has an interesting game. He is a legitimate center with size. He has skills to be able to step out on the perimeter, is a capable passer as well. There is a reason he had the offers he did. It's hard to find guys that tall with that skill set. If he was a freak athlete as well, he'd be Dwight Howard and bound for the NBA after 1 year in college.

I think this kid is going to have a very nice career at Iowa. He has a nice, soft touch and very long arms. The fact he can pop out and hit the baseline jumper will bide well for Iowa as someone will need to come out and guard him.

I admit, I've taken a few years off of Iowa basketball (meaning, not watching every game or making the trek to Carver) ... but I REALLY like the makeup of what we have and what we have coming. I've missed Iowa basketball ...

I think Garza is going to be very good. Maret is 650, K- 12 (elementary (K-8) and high school on same campus). Their elementary school counts in their enrollment. Garza's video was just highlight clips of the game. Maybe if we could see the whole game we would have a better perspective of the caliber of competition. Heck, some of Iowa's best talent has come out of smaller schools than Maret, like Raef LaFrentz, Jess Settles and many more.

That's what I said earlier about him but some guy who must think all big guys that are white are the exact same called him the same player as woody, when their isn't anything the same or near the same too. I love his bulk he has, most the time you gotta put weight on them "woody" and it takes forever. Sometimes never.

I'm glad we can just worry about him getting in the weight room and making that weight into good muscle. Also heard not only does he have a nice jumper, he's hit some threes in games this year from a poster.

Nice hands, long arms, and moves well for a big guy. Shot looks good and he is relentless on the boards, although he was at least 4 or 5" taller than any opponent. Playing "above the rim" is overrated. It looks good on highlights, but it seldom wins games.

Competion is sometimes overrated if a guy can play he can play. I've seen about 15 minutes or more of highlight films from him in one of the games he played a guy his size and was scoring/rebounding just fine.

He also plays in the D.C. Area where there are a lot of good players. Also his rating has went up everytime a new one has come out meaning he must be doing well in AAU. The rankings count AAU as more importance than high school ball by far.

Dude looks tenacious!! Doesn't want to give up on a shot or a board.

Needs to put on some muscle to play against B10 competition, but certainly has a good looking upside.
