*****MAGA in disarray, who will be speaker of the House***** McCarthy REMOVED! Jim Jordan 0-3. Election denier Mike Johnson confirmed. Vote them out

Interesting.

It’s stupid to question bloated Federal spending….

No wonder we’re $31T in debt…
No the stupid question was the IRS needing more funds. It was a decent sized story all last year. Of tax payers having refunds in limbo. If u had a broader point it didn't apply here. Hence it was either ignorant or stupid.

Maybe federal spending would look better if we had given the IRS the tools to bring in more revenue from scofflaws and tax evaders.

It is a two-way street, you know -- revenue AND spending. Improving the efficacy of the IRS will have a net positive impact on revenue generation.

That doesn't irk. Me it's the fact Congress is trying to screw over folks by law who aren't allowed to e file. Generally speaking those aren't people of vast resources. Who can afford to wait months on refunds.

The IRS probably does need more money.

Few points.

1) Every federal agency asks for more money...pretty standard.

2) How do we ensure that these agencies are actually using their budgets efficiently and/or smartly? We do a very job at oversight of government agencies.

3) Whenever a Federal agency is shitty at their mission...it's always because of manning/funding. Give us more money and we'll get the job done effectively. It's been proven to be BS repeatedly.

So pardon me when I'm a little skeptical when another Government agency says they need more funding to complete their mission. Have they looked at doing an re-organization.....are they too mid-management heavy? Who knows....

LOL...next time the "fiscally responsible party" has power, how about they focus on cutting spending before they cut taxes.

And we all know why they won't do that. I'll gladly wear the Dem "Tax and Spend" sash over the GOP "Borrow and Spend" one.

What's constantly amazing to me are the folks who vote GOP while decrying deficits (every Republican over the past 50 years).

Skepticism is ok. But what you're doing seems to be outright denial. We already have reports that the IRS is unable to go after millionaires from lack of resources. So efficiency doesn't seem to have anything to do with it. It looks like a lack of tools to go after these tax cheats.

That's certainly what the IRS is arguing. I'm skeptical...

Screw the millionaires and tax scafflaws!
3 years ago I received a notice from the IRS that I owed an additional $19k......an obvious addition error....Called my tax guy and he mailed in the info the IRS needed. A couple of months later, I received a letter from the IRS stating that my updated info had been received and in 90 days they would have a finding for me and communicate with me the result. 90 days letter, I received this same letter, again. 90 days after that the IRS contacted me and told me that indeed the calculation was their error and I was to receive an additional $500 refund.
I talked to my tax guy and he said that he was glad it worked out and there was no doubt in his mind the error was theirs...and not "ours." He also said that sadly if this would have happen 10 years prior he could have telephoned the agent in charge and settled the error and I would have gotten my refund 30 days after the phone call.....and not 11 months after the fact.
So yeah......more agents are needed to review tax documents, perform audits and perform the day to day of the IRS. Retirements from the IRS have gone largely vacant and not filled for the past several years. And with the
"new" Trump tax rates and rules, there are a lot of questions to be answered and audits to be performed.

We have more millionaires than ever and collected taxes don't reflect all of that additional wealth. Why would you be skeptical that taxes aren't being properly collected?
I'm skeptical the IRS will collect the additional tax revenue...from millionaires.

But that's not what you were doing. You were questioning the IRS spending specifically. If you really wanted to question bloated spending you would start with Defense since that is, by far, the largest category of spending. But you won't because you're disingenuous. And you're following the right wing talking points.

Dude it was a huge story that millions could not get their tax returns processed in a half way timely fashion. Processing tax returns is the core responsibility of the IRS. So I stand by my critique either ignorance u forgot about it. Or you're stupid on this issue and think everything in the government needs cut. When in reality some things do and some don't.

1 trillion in lost tax revenue annually with IRS in its current state

1. When did I say everything in government needs to be cut?

2. There are more reasons than a lack of agents for the backlog

This is what the GOP critics are talking about Republican disingenuousness on the issue. They talk a BIG game about cutting spending, but in their rush to NOT COLLECT TAXES, they just increase the deficit. It's all bullshit:

Like another poster said, at least the shit the Democrats spend on are actual programs and projects and not just give-backs to millionaires and billionaires.

It’s that the IRS handles too much paper and has failed to adopt scanning technology that could have significantly reduced the current backlog of returns.

LOL - so just buy a bunch of computers, right? No need for additional personnel.
Could reduce the amount of paper completely by changing the law. And allowing nearly everyone to e-file

Here's an article from 26 years ago. Not much has changed. Modernization efforts have all been failures. Mostly because contractors can't handle the massiveness of the IRS. They try to turn them into a bank or credit card company. Years ago they brought all these execs from VISA in and that didn't work. The modernization IMO needs to start with simplifying the tax law.

The new employees aren't going to be only agents. Many of the employees will be brought in to improve their IT infrastructure.
I realize that….

It was identified to the IRS that they needed to go digital back in 04. They had the technology back then but decided not to fully implement their 2D scanning and stick with manual transcribing. A huge waste of manpower.

Mismanagement and a failure to utilize the resources they had effectively put them in this situation just as much as anything else

That could definitely be true. However, it is still a problem that needs to be fixed.

Any comment on the GOP legislation adding $114 billion to the U.S. deficit by hamstringing the IRS' ability to collect legitimate tax revenue?

The GOP sucks.

Doesn’t change the fact the IRS has been mismanaged…refused to implement technology they’ve had since 2004 to free up personnel for other tasks.

Both can and are true.

Well, yeah. And one of the political parties in this country has come up with legislation to try and reverse that unfortunate situation and the other one is actively trying to kill that effort.

And you consistently pillory the one that is coming up with a solution while excusing the one that is obstructing.

I don't get it.

Where do I excuse the Republicans?

My main point is we simply don’t get a very good band for our $$$ from most of these government agencies. In this specific instance a failure to implement simple technology private tax offices use….they’ve had it since 04. They still have personnel manually transcribing paper tax returns.

It’s crazy.

I do go after D’s…because their answer is to throw more $$$ at a problem. R’s do it too….spend like drunk sailors.

Pass an omnibus which none of them had time to actually look at or debate.

I’m sure the new funding will fix everything though 😂

It’s a lot easier to get problems fixed with money when you actually have the ability to collect the money owed.

Which again is literally what the new GOP House is seeking to stop.

Fair enough.

More money covers up underlying systemic problems that go unresolved. But I guess it’s the only band aid we have though…
