was watching the Whisky game and saw that Carolina had a kid from Iowa. The kid is a player, did Iowa or ISU ever have a shot at him? Not meant to be a dig, just wondering.

Iowa had no shot. It was right after Fran arrived and Iowa was still pretty bad. Sucks because he was a good player and he was in Iowa's backyard. If Lickliter would of been canned a year or two earlier who knows.

Just like Barnes as well. He was in ISU's backyard, but they were not very good at the time. Any kid from Iowa, if Roy, Mike K, or any of the blue bloods come a calling its hard to say no. I mean you could stay and play for Iowa, ISU, or UNI. But to be honest to get the opportunity to play for a hall fame coaches and in some of those venues is hard to turn down.

UNC was his dream school. Iowa and ISU weren't much to write home about at the time of his commitment.

He took multiple visit to Iowa, and was on the same AAU team as Woodbury and Gesell. Iowa had the best chance of all the in-state schools, and had McCaffery been here longer, there was a decent chance he would have come to Iowa. There was quite a bit of speculation just prior to signing day that he was going to flip from Carolina to the Hawks. This obviously didn't happen.

If last night was the first you have ever heard of Marcus Paige you clearly are not a basketball fan in the State of Iowa.

this and the fact that MJ just happened to be on campus at the time of his visit and just happened to run into him while there... what new for UNC tho.

He played for Linn-Mar. UNC offers more national recognition and attention from the NBA scouts. Hope it doesn't backfire on him because UNC is in the sites of the NCAA's heavy artillery for their academic fraud scandal.

What about his sister?? They were talking last night how she went to Wisky and was all that and is currently playing in Europe..
I don't recall her being really good and I don't think Iowa even offered her.. can anyone verify??

Fran told him if he came to Iowa we would play in the final four. And I think we would have too.

Certainly possible considering he is the best player on Carolina, which Iowa beat. And NC gave UW all they could handle as well.

Either Paige or Ulis would have made Iowa a Top 15-Top 10 type squad, IMO.

Oh well.

With today's social media, go pro's, cell phone camera's videos, players no longer really consider whether or not where they play at will be noticed by NBA scouts. You could play for the worst crappy obscure team in timbucktu and if you are NBA material the NBA will find you. maybe 20 30 years ago and before it did somewhat matter. if the game wasn't televised or school to obscure NBA scouts might have missed on a player so players wanted to play on high exposure teams from high exposure conferences. I don't think now kids care where they play from a getting noticed by the NBA perspective but more from wanting to play for traditional power schools and legendary HoF coaches.

^^^^ Playing time, prestige program or close to home, relationship with coach. After that the kid has a deviant mind, like maybe the major, or if he can go surfing.

She was a very good high school player, and was one of Wisky's best--if not THE best--players during her tenure. Pretty sure she dealt with some injuries as well but can't completely remember.
They are just not a very good team and it's not like she was Sue Bird to give them 8-10 more wins by herself.

When you look at the players Fran has been in on and just missed, sooner or later he's going to get a few of them and I think the climb continues. Next year might be a step back. Then again, it might not. Who knows?

Iowa got the last laugh on Paige, unless of course they meet again, and North Carolina wins.

Well, maybe. I notice that North Carolina hasn't made the final four since Paige has been there so I'm not sure he would have been enough to put Iowa over the top.

Marcus Paige grew up when Iowa was playing bad basketball. I'm just not sure how Iowa kids can play out of state. Parents must not have been big Iowa fans or else it would have rubbed off.

Growing up my entire family watched Iowa basketball on TV and it was like a family event every game. That was when all games were shown on TV.

Iowa basketball was king and family's used to watch it all the time. Alford came and had some good years and some bad years, and it ended badly. I think that ended the family watching era of Iowa basketball. Back in the day the only games you got on TV were ISU or Iowa. Now ESPN has brought on all the other schools and also AAU has exposed these kids to the other coaches and teams.

Im sorry but if your an Iowa kid and you grow up following the hawks and supporting them, then you will end up a hawk. But if the in-state schools are terrible and there are major college programs calling, then you have to go where the success is. Im sorry I do not fault this kid for going to UNC. He got a great offer and is making the most of it.

If you need to play for a high profile team to get noticed by the pros you aren't good enough for the pros
