What's your vibe on Lester?

I think he has done an amazing job so far. Iowa is currently 35th in the nation in offensive efficiency, they were 121 last year. Last time Iowa was 35th was 2017. For him taking what was here and doing what he has this quickly is phenomenal.

He's been great for us obviously. The only thing I'll really pin on him is KJ not getting goalline carries against ISU.

I'd be more than ok with it if he stayed awhile but what vibe do you guys get from him?

-Is he our OC as long as KF is here?
-Do you think he'd be a good candidate if KF retired if it meant he retained some of the defensive staff?
-Do you think he wants another HC shot?

What ya fellas think?
Needs a whole lot more talent to compete with the big boys. Scores more points because KJ hits the home run vs bad teams but next year will be the test. That team will have no talent.

You guys really think a guy who has bounced around and stated he wants to raise his kids in one place, is going to give up an OC job that pays pretty well and will probably pay even more if he continues to improve the offense to risk that stability and go somewhere else where just like before in his career, he might get bounced in a couple years? Uprooting his family once again to take another position and then again in a couple years if that position does not work out. Especially when his own al-ma mater showed him less loyalty then Iowa will if he continues to improve the offense? Maybe I am just old, but money is not everything, enjoying what you do is invaluable, just ask Phil Parker or any other of our coaches that had opportunities to leave.
Yeah, coaches who state they're in for the long haul always keep their word.

I know Hawkeye fans are used to having coaches that stick around forever, but there is such a thing as coaches who have bigger and better dreams; we just haven't seen it here since Joe Philbin 22 years ago. For the most part, if you go into big-time coaching, you are usually giving up the "stability" and "raising your kids in one place" thing.

Exactly. Like I said being OC or DC at Iowa is pretty big time, fairly good gig and I would say it offers more stability then lesser jobs and for sure more then "big time" jobs. There is nothing saying he can not be in the talks as the next Iowa HC, but the bar is set pretty high on how well other coaches units at Iowa perform. Talking about Lester being the next head coach at Iowa 3/4 th's of the way through his first season is insane when other coaches here have been performing at a high rate your years and years. But if KF stays around until his contract is up, that might be enough time for Lester to prove he is up to the standards. Who knows.

yes, unless he leaves on his own
a defensive position coach is getting the HC job, likely wallace.
the only way he'd get a power 5 job is if he got iowa into the top 10 in offense, I don't see him going back to a G5 school

I want to see how he does NEXT year without Kaleb Johnson and others gone.
while i have no disagreement with your point even what lester has done with kaleb is stellar. i don’t think most ocs manage to get this level of production out of kaleb

really hope we find a couple talented pieces for next year coz
not even the best oc can work miracles without some talent

I agree. Given the timeframe of Lester's arrival and the unavailability of Cade and Sully until Fall camp, the passing game was always going to be behind. I'm super interested in seeing the evolution of the passing game under Lester. I have a feeling we'll see a fairly sizable dropoff in running game production/efficiency, but with Sully's return and the improvement of the WR room, I expect to see a pretty sizable improvement in the passing game.

IDK, our younger backs are starting to look decent. Give them almost another full year to grow in all ways and we may just have another all big back in the wings. I too am excited to see what happens next year in the passing game. Again more time for everyone involved to gel and get reps together. We will hear a lot about the #2's during bowl prep as the coaches get more time to work with them. I mean it doesn't really mean much, because you have 8 months or so between bowl prep and fall camp and a lot of ground can be made or lost in 8 months. But it is still nice to hear who is catching the eyes of coaches.

I'm OK with coordinators moving on and up if they've done good things for the program.
I appreciated Fry's coaching tree. I considered it a marker of how great a HC he was.

We have some very hard to please posters on this board.

He’s been INCREDIBLE! I felt very confident that it would be an upgrade, but this has been a transformation. A top 10 rushing attack?? Are you kidding? For all the bluster about KF and OL and Iowa running the ball, we are actually DOING it this year. A near 90-spot jump in efficiency, scoring 40+ several times… and all of it with a pretty poor QB taking snaps for over half the season.

If I were Georgia, I’d be throwing $2 million at him in a few months. Dead effing serious.

I have been very happy with him so far, exceeded my expectations. I see him staying around a few years to further build up his resume. Maybe he leaves when the Captain decides to retire? I could definitely seeing him going back the NFL for sure…😉
