Marinelli

Also #7 SPG defeated #2 Blair 27-24, SPG was down 21-24 going into the last 2 matches.

Awesome job Alex, can't wait to have you dominating people in a Hawkeye singlet.

Read that too and Graham beat Blairs Academy today. Alex is going to be an absolute stud. Real question now (with putting no additional pressure on him) will he redshirt next year? Great kid with a great attitude.

49 Kemerer
57 Sorenson
65 Marnelli

Two things....tried to watch the dual on Flo and I can't...no video up. I'll chalk it up to a very busy day. Second, somebody needs to get on Flo and change Marinelli's profile...His college choice still says tOSU. Marinelli just isn't fit to be in a tanning bed...he'd go from being "the bull" to being "the lobster."

I don't believe that Marinelli redshirts. I think he's going to come in and put a stomping on anyone that's his weight or near it, so he'll earn his way into the lineup next year.

I think it's going to be:
149-Sorenson
157-Kemerer
165-Marinelli
Make's the potential lineup for next year....

125-Gilman
133-Clark
141-Turk
149-BS
157-Kemerer
165-The Bull
174-Meyer
184-Brooks
197-Wilke/Holloway
HWT-Stoll

Think Holloway grand the spot and flip Kemerer and bs around. Sorenson going 57.

Knight563, BS moving up wouldn't surprise me either. Guy is strong, and Ironside already kind of called it to happen.

How to win NCAAs:

Sign two guys like Marinelli and Kemerer every year.

How to be 2nd-3rd-4th:

Do something else.
Well lets start with Spencer Lee in this next recruiting class. Who I personally think should be #1 p4p right now, considering he blitzed the field in dominant fashion on his way to a JR world title while still at cadet age level while Mark Hall failed to place losing to his nemesis Peter Nagy. (Don't get me wrong Mark Hall is still great, Just think Spencer is better)

We also have Mejia and Renteria lined up. Mejia a top 20 I think? Renteria a top 50? Which other top 10 recruit do you see fitting great into our lineup that should be a priority in this next recruiting class?

The only other JR's on FLOs p4p are Yianni (committed to Cornell), Fix (Even if we got him, we wouldn't get Spencer then so not likely), and Arajau (who is also Cornell I believe). My opinion is we need to start looking for an elite 184/197 type of recruit as we are pretty solid in the lighter and middle weights + heavyweight for a while.

Edit: Just looked at the class rankings on FLO and I think two prime targets would be Chase Singletary (Blair) who is projected to be a 197 and #4 in his class behind Lee, Fix, and Yianni. As well as #9 in the class Jacob Warner who is projected at 184 from Washington, Illinois. One of these guys + Lee would be fantastic combined with Mejia and Renteria.

Also Brady Berge the #7 of this class has to be on our radar, and us on his presumably. Hell, just snag Lee, Berge, Mejia, Renteria, and Warner/Singletary and call er good. :)

I haven't been as excited to get a recruit on campus since Metcalf. I feel safe saying that Marinelli is a game changing recruit and has an extremely good chance of having the same type of impact that Metcalf did on the program.

The most exciting part for me is that he still has so much more room to reach his ceiling and is already almost an unstoppable force.

I like the chances that the staff lands 2 out of 3 between Berge, Warner, and Lee.

I watched his match with Blair. He was absolutely relentless on his feet. I think he had 7 tds. That's incredible bumping up against the #3 guy in the country.

I honestly think Spencer Lee will be a Hawk. I figured Hall would go with Nebraska or Penn State Our record isn't good at the weight Hall will wrestle. As for Lee he will get no better tutelage than Iowa can provide. He would be much better off at Iowa than Penn State for sure. The same probably held form for Hall. We just haven't produced or developed at that weight for awhile. I think it would be a huge mistake for Lee not to come to Iowa to develop into the best he can be. Others must be able to see this as well.

Thanks Kwoodhawk for the videos.
Like Tarp said we need to get at least 2 of these type of studs every year.

Thanks for posting! Can't wait to see his development under TnT. Wish wrestling was like football were high school SR's can graduate early and enroll spring semester;)

And no I'm not saying put Marnelli into the line up this year. Just get him in the room and ready to go next season.

I feel it's going to be real hard to keep Lee away from PSU. U know Cael is all over him and previous history has shown that when he goes after someone and usually gets them.

I hope Lee is a Hawkeye as well, but everything ur saying is the same stuff we heard about Suriano not to long ago and we know how that turned out. PSU seems to be getting whomever they want recently. I need to work on my positive thinking! Hopefully we land Lee! Go Hawks!

Definitely Young. Kid just keeps getting better every year.
I think ur right. Flo has him in the 50-60 top seniors but I feel this past year he has risen himself to top 30. Now do you consider him a Marinelli/ Kemerer type recruit? I only ask because based on what Tarp said if he is then we did well last year. I'm happy we got the other three as well. All are very talented and with the right motivation can turn themselves into something very special.

Maybe Suriano does not have Olympic aspirations. Lee comes from a family that knows what it takes to be the best in the world. Being at Iowa with the best lightweights and best lightweight coaches may be the difference.

I think Kemerer and The Bull are five star recruits. I believe Young is a 4 at the present time IMHO. I believe Todd Connor has an interview where he said Young will eventually be at 174.

Kemerer top 10 recruit and definite 5 Star shouldn't miss kid. Thompsen and Stroker were in that 15-20 rankings and IMO 4 Star level kids. Not sure I'd throw Happel or Young in that 4 star level quite yet, I would think they're both 3 star which reflects their plus 40 class ranking. I think Turk was in the plus 50 class ranking and I'd consider him a 3 star recruit. A lot can happen between now and the time they get on campus. I hope Happel, Young compete at Fargo Junior Nationals this summer.

Pains me to say it, but these are valid points.

Who do u think is our second best recruit this year? Happel, Rathbun, Young, or Wagner?
2014: IA got #14 Stoll. PSU got #4 Nolf, #5 Nevills, #7 Nickal. tOSU got #1 Snyder, #6 M Jordan, #9 Haines.
2015: IA got #8 Kemerer. PSU got #5 Joseph. tOSU got #4 Martin, #11 Hayes.
2016: IA got #3 Marinelli. PSU got #1 Hall, #6 Suriano, #8 Manville. tOSU got #5 Pletcher.
2017: IA got #17 Troy, #20 Mejia. PSU got #13 N Lee. (#1 S Lee is the big get.)

This is why we need at least 2 studs every year: 1 makes us feel good but doesn't gain any ground whatsoever in the team race. The bar has been raised and we're moving too slowly to match it.

It doesn't help that PA is killing it at the HS level while IA is sucking wind: 7 top-20 guys in class of '16 for PA vs. 0 for IA (#25 Happel is highest); 4 top-20 guys in class of '17 for PA vs. 0 for IA (#51 Schlitz is highest); 4 top-20 guys in class of '18 for PA vs. 1 for IA (#7 Thomsen). That's a built-in advantage for PSU, and it means we're going to see more IA teams made up of out-of-state kids--from PA, CA, OH, MN, etc.

As to the question of who is our second-best recruit this year, I suppose Happel, who is ranked #25 in the class (but only #12 at 138, so one of those rankings is way off), followed by Young, who is ranked #66. Young may turn out to be the better of the two, but right now it's a moot point because PSU is recruiting exclusively from the top 10, from which they plucked 3. So from an NCAA title pov, our second-best recruit may be "no one."

We've got to get the guys who are in our sights, like Lee--not let them slip through our fingers like we did with Suriano: whatever happened there, we failed in our goal. We've got to fix whatever negative perception of IA causes a guy like Hall to include every other major program except IA among his final 5. And we've got to be bold about letting guys know we want them even if they may seem like a lock elsewhere, like Gabe Steveson (could we have gotten little Tsirtsis if we'd tried harder? Or the Valencias?).

I agree with LaxHawk's targets: Lee, Berge, Singletary. Don't know anything about Warner, Embree, Labriola (all top juniors in the 74-97 range). Top 3 sophs are Steveson (220), Artalona (145), Carr (157)...and of course #7 Thomsen, who is so slick even though he's totally not the weight we need.

For those who have heavily watched Marinelli, how is his top game? We need guys who can rack up back points. This is where Nolf and Nickal are taking over for Taylor and Ruth. They are beasts on top and when added to Rutherford, they have the team scoring advantage imo.

Ok we all need to read the book, The Secret.

We have any and every recruit we want

We win an abundance of national titles over the next ten years

This blog reinforces the positive nature of Hawk fans

Willie loves HIS Hawks and shares it with all Flo website viewers. In all honesty Willie has been great this season on his podcast - give FloLive a listen!

CP waits 4 weeks into the future seasons to come and then make his rankings;) - especially 141. Just having fun CP, we all know how much time you put into the rankings and we thank you.

IAwrestle grows even bigger and brings awesome events all over the state but let's be honest - just go to Carver.

For what its worth, I seem to remember a poster here (Gobblin perhaps?) saying that Warner was at the Grapple and planning multiple trips to Iowa City in a rather positive tone. I would say a 184 is a bigger need than 197, but thats just due to the fact that Holloway at this point in time looks to have more upside than I saw from Wilcke at Midlands and competing so far, a lot could change. I'm just not sure how interested Singletary is in the Hawks, although he would be a fantastic get.

Labriola beat Young at the PA state tournament last year in the 3rd place match I believe. But Young only came back this year and dominated him at the Super 32, took him down, cradled him up and stuck him like it was nothing. Young is on the upward trajectory and who knows, maybe if we get Berge, hopefully one of the 2 grows into a natural 184 lber instead of being forced there by lineup congestion. Perhaps then Singletary is the better target than Warner in that scenario.

165 Marinelli
174 Young/Berge
184 Young/Berge/Warner
197 Holloway/Singletary

To compliment the very deep lower and middle weights we will hopefully have.
