The Big Ten office announced that it agrees with Maryland’s one-game suspension of men’s basketball player Diamond Stone for violating the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy during a game against Wisconsin on Saturday night. The conference also publicly reprimands Stone for his actions.

Stone was issued a contact dead ball technical foul at the end of the first half during Saturday’s game against Wisconsin. He will serve the suspension Thursday at Minnesota.

Stone’s actions were in violation of Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01, which states in part that “The Big Ten Conference expects all contests involving a member institution to be conducted without compromise to any fundamental element of sportsmanship. Such fundamental elements include integrity of competition, civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials.”

The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.

I didn't see the game but that crap shouldn't be tolerated in the Big Ten. It's a cheap ass thug play. No class Maryland, I thought you were better than that.

I'm fine with one game. More games may be more appropriate but I'll be honest, I didn't think they'd suspend him any games.

One game against acrap opponent that they will smoke. Better punishment would be next game verses Wisconsin also. Even if it is in BTT or post season

I give Wisky a ton of credit with not getting into a brawl. That was a bs move and one game frankly says all you need to know about the program. Not a real good message to all involved and while I hope the kid has learned a lesson I highly doubt it. Could have been one of those Luke Witte moments.

Would they have suspended him if the next game was against MSU, Iowa or Indiana? Not doing anything about the worthless officials is a slap in the face. At some point they must be held accountable also.

Seems like a reasonable punishment to me. Minny on the road is not going to be a gimme for Mary Land.

I believe that the head official in the crew is Bo Boroski, who is not a good official. The official who was in the middle of the players keeping it from getting worse, the tall bald official who has done a bunch of Iowa games, is one of my favorite officials. I am not sure if the call is the head official's to make, but he should at least be verbally reprimanded.

I think the 1-game suspension is sufficient....a punch would be worthy of a multi-game punishment.

Didn't bang it, just pushed it down as he got up.

Let it go, it has zero affect on you personally, or on our Hawkeyes.
Pushed it? Umm no. He banged it. What he did is considered more dangerous than punching someone. This isn't rocket science. Not sure why you don't understand.

Banged it. Also, basically tackled him to get to that point on the floor. Cheap shot all the way no matter who it affects. Go Gophers!

Does he get to travel with the team?

I hope he's there in person to witness his comrades go down to the soon-to-be 1-13 Golden Goofers.

Carstenson (sp?) was the tall, bald official. Lives in Coralville I believe. And, he was the lead official. A shame as I have normally had no problem with his calls in the past but this was a miss.

Is this serious? lol In what other ways can you bang someone's head on the floor besides what he did?

I've never been much on games being fixed, but the official not getting reprimanded is causing some doubt.

As I said in another thread....How the heck could three officials look at all those angles of that play and come up with that ruling? And calling it a double technical was ridiculous.

No, a punch is Immediate ejection from the game, and missing the next game.

That's the key miss here is that Stone should not have been allowed to continue in the Wisconsin game, he should have been ejected as a Flagrant 2. Then could still have faced the additional game he got today.

I think the only reason the officials haven't been reprimanded is cuz it didn't receive the national attention it deserved.

I was watching the game and could not believe he was not tossed. Credit the Wiscy kids for no retaliation. They did not even put Diamond on the deck with a hard foul the rest of the game(would have been understandable).

Thanks for the clarification. Not sure what to think, because Carstenson has been pretty good official in every other game I have seen him this year. I think he has called at least 4 or 5 Hawk games, and he has controlled those games and still let the kids play without making it a free throw shooting contest. To his credit, he did get the middle of the possible bench clearing and was actually restraining the big angry looking dude from Wisky, who wanted a piece of Stone.

I am curious how decisions on flagrant fouls are made. Is it the decision of the head official, or is it more of a consensus among the officials?

Yep, gutless move by the refs, they were afraid to kick him out.

Calling it equally on both teams was also gutless as well as dishonest given what both players did.

I'm fine with calling the Wisky player for a T but then you really have to kick Stone out.

I watched Pardon the interruption today, for the first time in a year, just to see if they would say anything about it. Nope, nothing. They made a big stink about Woody's eye poke, but not this. That show really does suck.

I'm also fine with the one game suspension which is against the Gophers as it should be with that being the next game on the schedule, We don't get to pick and choice which game he sits out. I also believe he should have been tossed in the Wis. game, but that is water under the bridge now. Hope the Gophers can play their best game of the year that night, and it costs them for not having Stone in the line up.

I watched this game in full... 1... Diamond Stone should have been given a flagrant 2 IMO... 2... I forgot his name(Thomas?) from Wisconsin didn't deserve a technical... 3... I am surprised and okay with the 1 game suspension. I expected the incident to be brushed under the rug as no big deal, but I commend Turgeon and Maryland for stepping it up though the officials in the game didn't... 4... I feel 1 game is enough, because though it was a dirty play Stone definitely pulled up. The NCAA has been talking all this stuff about cutting down on concussions and then allow something like that to happen and only get a technical foul for it. Had Stone gone full force on his head I would say at least 3 games. If anything this makes the officials and NCAA look bad for not making it right from the start.

His teammate got his head slammed into the ground. All he did was come to his defense and didn't really do anything or make any contact with a Maryland player. What did you want his reaction to be? He was more than under control for what Stone did. That technical was almost as bad as not throwing Stone out.

Like I said, I didn't get to watch on TV, but I REALLY hope he was there tonight...
