Matt gatens

He didn't have a single game his senior year where he made each 3 pt shot he took.
LOL

He was referring combining the end of the Indiana and beginning of the Wisconsin game. Because he made last 7 vs Indiana and first 5 vs Wisconsin so he actually did make 12 in a row over a multi game span. Hence the word multi not 1 game troll.

This link will set everything straight regarding Gatens's stats over his career. Of note, he did have a really great 5 game run where he hit 27 of 38 three point shots. In contrast, he only hit 11 of his 37 three point shots during his next 7 games which were the last of his career. Minus that great streak which had us all wowed, he was 48-145 the other games that year which was a very pedestrian 33%.
Gatens had 8 games, including his last 2 in the NIT, where he failed to score double figures and he had another 7 games that season when he scored between 12 and 10 points. Matt had 4 games when he never made a three point shot and 11 games when he made only 1 three point shot and he had 10 games when he only made 2 three point shots. So other than those 5 games, he wasn't playing like the icon that people make him out to be. Other than those 5 games, I love the kid for his loyalty and his Dad taking a stand, but he was what he was and that might be only a third or fourth option on this years team.
Bogey and Bacall may have had Paris, but Gatens had those 5 great games.

From a pretty reliable source I've heard how Mike told Barta if Lick stayed another year Matt would transfer. That alone makes me a fan of Mike Gatens.
I’m sure your source is correct and I’m sure Matt was as frustrated as the rest of us, but I doubt Matt would have left. He and Lick seem to have stayed in touch.

Watched him score 33 in a 67-66 Hawkeye victory over what I believe was a #15 Wisconsin team in 2012,.. We had won the early season matchup in Madison so Wisconsin was looking for payback,.. Gatens was absolutely unstoppable in the second half,.. Badger fans poured out of Carver with a mixture of anger and tears,.. It was glorious!!!
great memory from, can you believe it, 8 years ago!

Love Matt too, but remember he had real difficulty finishing at the rim. Seemed odd, a well-built guy busting toward the hoop then seemingly jackknifing his torso to avoid contact.

Yes, senior year he was flat out ballin'. Great Hawkeye.

Don't know if Matt would have actually considered transferring or not, but do know it wouldn't be the first time a parent, especially one with influence, would try to force a coaching change.

Matt had two seasons over .400 from 3, which is outstanding shooting.

Normally I'm a "you are what your record says you are" kind of guy. But Matt deserves a little asterisk. He played on the least talented teams since before Lute arrived. He was double teamed far more than a typical guard and was forced into far too many wild shots at the shot clock buzzer to even count.

As if not bad enough, he also played two season with untalented / unmotivated or injured teammates AND an offense that sometimes scored in the teens for an entire half. I mean, if ever a guy was swimming upstream his entire career it was Matt Gatens.

Matt, also, had 2 seasons when he didn't shoot 40% overall, let alone from the 3 point stripe. And, if you take out his great 5 game hot streak, he only shot 33% that last season from the three point line, not 40.0 plus percent. His high mark was just 41%. His career 3 point percentage was considerably less than 40% at 36.7% and if you discount the effect that those great 5 games had, the rest of his career he shot only 34.5%. Last year, Bohannon shot at a 38.3 percentage operating in pain and in need of surgery and had seasons of 41.6 and 43.0 prior to that. McCausland had a career percentage of 45.3 and a high season at 52.2. I had a lot of admiration for Gatens, but you can't make excuses for him or anyone unless you can come up with a stat that measures the adversity levels that EVERYONE faces.

Glad to see Fran give Gaten's a break. I'd also like Deano at Iowa, but he doesn't really have any personal connection with Fran.

CMAC is destined to get the next assistant job.

I would agree overall Matt is a good hire and always admired his BBall skills and on court personality.

gotta put Chris Kingsbury on that list.

Gatens is a great hire
I'm not sure I'd put Kingsbury on a PURE shooters list, with guys like JBO or Kent Mac. Chris was a bomber. Fearless, certainly with ZERO conscience. Entertaining without question, but the dude would shoot you out of as many games as he'd shoot you into, and just keep right on chucking until he got the hook....

I've never met Matt but know Mike really well - good dude. Glad to see Gatens come home.
