Congrats.

Middleweights are deep for Iowa -
157 - 9 wrestlers there now (2 SRs).
149 - 7 wrestlers (0 SRs)
165 - 4 wrestlers (0 JRs or SRs)

Semi-related, possible recruiting news; I looked into the kid that beat Malcolm by tech fall in Greco from Wisconsin Fritz Schierl from Stephens Point Area Senior High (SPASH) On his Facebook profile he lists Iowa wrestling as one of his likes. Also a Badger fan of course. Interesting that he lists Wisconsin Football in his favorite sports teams and Iowa wrestling. Anyways he's a 2 time state qualifier, placed as a soph, went 2-2 last year at 157. Overall record of 86-14. He's wrestling 160 this year and projects as a 157lber.

Just a little nugget of info here. . . . Fritz wrestles with a couple of kids at SPASH whose dad grew up in Iowa City and are big Iowa fans. Their dad's a lifelong Hawk fan and happens to post on this board from time to time. I suspect having those guys as teammates has rubbed off on Fritz to some degree where his interest in Iowa wrestling is concerned. I'm sure Dad can elaborate if he chooses to do so.

Spooner, I told him the checkbook will be open for you if they're paying for a kid you can beat as a sophomore. He said I'll never be a Hawk, and told me where he's going.

Interesting. Wisconsin would be a pretty good pipeline to tap into. They always have a handful of studs. Maybe Moody can be the first in a new crop of Badger snags!

That seems like a rather silly thing to do. And a presumptuous way of thinking.

Oh, okay. Thanks Spooner. Who the f*#% are you? I've known him since he was born, I'll have any conversation I want with him. When Marcus is done with highschool the checkbook will be open, it just won't be Iowa's. Brands is not the coach people want to wrestle for these days. Panther Train!!!

Just more weirdness. Last I checked Iowa is landing good recruits and is finishing higher than UNI by a considerable amount. (I'm a UNI season ticket holder, fwiw) You seem to be making a huge deal about a walk on level recruit. Seems like just a way to tell everyone how connected you are. Congrats, I guess.

I don't want to join the pissing match, but a couple of observations. I'd be interested in hearing more evidence that Brands is not the coach kids want to wrestle for. If the claim has any merit, that's a problem. But Sans mentioned one particular kid, who's ranked #20 at 160--the same weight where Iowa has both #1 Marinelli and #10 Young. If I were Coleman I wouldn't be looking at Iowa, and if I were Iowa I wouldn't be looking at Coleman.

As long as I can remember, Iowa has been a polarizing program, with fans, coaches, and wrestlers. I heard this type of talk from my high school peers even when Gable coached. That a kid from Ames would say he never would wrestle for Brands / Iowa does not surprise me at all.

A guy like Sans being a close friend, or at least claiming to be, of this kid and his family surprises me even less.

Yeah, I don't think there's any imminent threat of UNI overtaking Iowa. UNI overtaking Iowa State is another matter. But I'm not here to bash either. My only concern is Iowa; I never like to hear that kids don't want to wrestle for Iowa, but I get it.

I am one of Marcus’ coaches and wanted to pass along that Marcus has a lot of respect for all the Iowa programs and would be honored to compete for any one of them if he had the opportunity. He has not ruled out any school at this point – his current focus is getting better and enjoying the sport. He also looks forward to attending the Grapple on the Gridiron, the Big Ten’s, and the Olympic trials this year. He is friends with Malcolm and they have a lot of mutual respect for each other. They both have made a lot of improvements over the last year.

But Sansouchi has Marcus on speed dial tho and changed his diapers or something...

Thanks for the info coach and best success to Marcus...He is on the cusp of having a special career. I used to wrestle in Ames's room as a kid back in Coach Mendenhall's days. Glad to see a kid from Ames having success. Going to be hard to pull him from State.

Marcus is just a junior so he could grow into a 174, where Iowa doesn't exactly have a lot of depth right now. I for one was impressed with his Fargo and hope he gives Iowa a shot next year.

80 All Americans Per Year.

5 year window, roughly, where recruits are involved in any given NCAA tourny.

Projecting a possible AA would mean, roughly, a top #16 overall rank or better. Lots of variables, but this is a starting point.

So, assuming a Top #30 Overall Rank or better, this gives the wrestler a starting expectation for a Round of 16 run or better at some point in his career, which is "in the hunt." Guys outside the TOP #60 overall in a given class are long shots to even make the NCAA tourny. These are start points, not fixed in stone. However, as recruiting tools are getting better and better, it would seem important to stack your team roster, at a minimum, with as many top #30 Overall recruits as possible. Coaching up a Round of 16 guy to a potential NC is much easier than trying to mold a non-qualifier into a potential NC. Recruiting needs to follow this line of thought.

Long shots sometimes hit, but making a living on long shots performing well and finishing at or near the top of the podium at NCAAs is a tough load to bear for ANY coaching staff.

I agree with your point 86,but late bloomers do happen hard to make a career on them though..pretty sure burroughs wasn't as highly thought of as he is now.

Burroughs could have been the #1 recruit in the country and your statement would still be true.
