McCollum PC

Already doing a better job on the marketing of IA MBB and BMC...

Plus a cool shot of the great Ronnie Lester too!
Fantastic video. I mean, I can't believe Iowa had something that awesome out there already. And the students and others forming the welcome line on the way in to Carver . . . Ho-ly cow! That's a home run video and a grand slam hire!

Talked about pace of the game. Defense 1st. Offensively would be middle of the pack. Taking good shots is the most important thing. Didn't have enough shooters at Drake this year which dictated offense.

Actively recruited Dix, Sandfort, and Koch to come back
What I thought was REALLY telling, was when he said good shot selection leads to a more efficient offense, and then you can set up your defense. This whole, "good shot selection" is so "anti Fran". Probably says a lot about why we never could defend anyone....

I love the idea of a whole new look for the Iowa basketball program. New coach. New attitude. New fan support.

I hope they get new uniforms to go along with it. Need to wipe away all vestiges of the Fran era.
I know we dabbled in it under Fran, but if our default uniforms had the script “Iowa”, or even script “Hawkeyes”, I would be one happy guy.

Ok Fran is gone now so let's stop bashing him if you don't mind

Agree with this. He said get the best shot, which makes sense when your offensive efficiency is among the best (If not the best) in the NCAA. Shooting and making shots at a high level allows the defense to get set and reduce transition opportunities for opponents. Make their defense work harder, using the shot clock to your advantage. The efficiency tends to give you an advantage as well in late clock situations IMHO.

You don't think Fran emphasized good shot selection with Payton?

Oh good Lord. Why is stating a fact, bashing someone. When your one of the worst defensive efficiency teams for 15 years you are what you are. Hell one of his past players came out and said they basically NEVER worked on defense in practice. It was just we'll play man or zone. Listen to what Ben said about shot selection, and how it leads to better defense, and then go back and watch some of the stuff (especially Payton) used to throw at the basket, leading to no rebounding and not being able to get back and defend. Its like a light bulb went off. I mean wow, maybe you could actually at least attempt to defend even with the athletes we had, IF you were smarter about how you played. Hmmm...

Anyone else notice at the end that old toad face TK was first up to shake BM's hand? Wonder if he's hoping to parlay this coaching change into a bit of a career reset? Trying to ingraited himself into some previously lacking access.

Bruce Pearl was his summer coach during a bball tourney up in NW Iowa
That was a pretty cool story. It’s special to have a coach who grew up like many of us, loving Iowa basketball and looking up to the same heroes we did as kids. His passion for Iowa basketball really shines through. Iowa has its coach and good things are coming.

Agreed! Im old school and it probably won't happen, but I'd like to see the unis be a throwback to the 80s or 90s look. Seemed like they changed quite a bit in the 90s from year to year, as I recall.

I kinda like those 92-93 jerseys.

All the reporters and web admins were, as they should try.

Is it your opinion that his move to On3 was a bad move? I’ve certainly wondered if it might have been.

Oh I'm not sure. it's no secret on here I don't like the guy.

I do know that On3., when I've visited their boards, is kinda a ghost town.

I also get the feeling that other Hawkeye beat reporters have much better access, more widely connected, and more well liked. TK may have thought his people would follow him over to On3 but it seems not. I'd be curious as to the actual subscriber numbers. Could be wrong.

Clough does a better job with this site IMO, has a podcast of his own and has on pretty good guests which adds I think.

You can complain about some aspects of Fran’s coaching, but his offense was very efficient.

I went there for the $1/year membership but with OT being on rivals, I just decided to stay here.

FYI, I have no idea what your beef is with him.

What

So no one from Moline?:oops::cool:
Drop the tough guy, LukaD, your hate for me is unwarned. I'm a Hawk fan that was thrilled that 2 of my home town high school players chose to go to Iowa to play basketball. If my enthusiasm irritated you, you have skin to thin. Get a life!
Fran is gone thank goodness, as I believe he lost interest in coaching Iowa basketball after Patrick left for Butler and never committing to the defensive end and rebounding was always going to be Fran's kryptonite.
Owen and Brock came to Iowa to win a championship, it didn't happen and it wasn't going to happen as long as Fran was coach, if they came to Iowa only because of Fran, that's on them, new coach McCollum is now in charge, whether Owen or Brock see the light of day inside Carver again appears highly doubtful, the pull of money is strong, it's the wild west and college basketball is never going to be the same, but they are still my home town hero's. If that upsets you, I hope you get help. In the mean time stop the hate and let's focus our attention to Iowa becoming a factor in post season success. In Ben McCollum I trust. Go Hawks!

We scored a lot of points but thats not always the best way to measure efficiency, (something BM's teams generally led the nation in). And Frankly the topic was how poor shot selection leaves your defense exposed, and in poor rebounding situations. Something Fran could write a book on....

This was Iowa's worst season by adj offensive efficiency on KenPom in years and they were still top 20. In the Garza/Murray twin era they were always top 5. He had great offenses by any metric.

Iowa ranked 8th nationally this year in efficient field goal percentage. Iowa ranked 9th nationally in fewest turnovers per possession. Iowa’s opponents played at a below average pace offensively (235th nationally) so it’s not like we were getting beat in transition all day.

Objectively, there is really nothing to seriously complain about how Iowa played offense under Fran. It was elite.

But the defense was horrible, and that was Fran’s downfall. You can criticize Fran for focusing too much on offense and for favoring offensive minded players. But I see a lot of people complain about shot selection and turnovers. Those were objectively not issues under Fran.

No real hate & I've said before I give you credit for showing the love for your hometown. But you were over the top & I was counterbalancing your irrational enthusiasm. I'd probably buy you a beer if I were ever in Moline again but probably won't be making that trip again.

Good luck to BH wherever he lands. I've mixed feelings on Owen as I do believe he quit on his teammates and that's soured me. I doubt he will play as big of a roll on his new team as he did at Iowa unless he develops as a +35% three-point shooter.

Now as Rodney King famously said "Can't we all just get along"? I say yes, yes we can if you can just start agreeing with me... lol

That won't happen anytime too soon. They still bash Brian a year later. Sad some folks can't move on.
So why is a conversation about what our weaknesses were, "bashing" exactly? I don't have anything against Fran the person. Thinking that after 15 years his "plan" wasn't working doesn't seem like bashing to me. So any post made about Fran has to be about what a great guy he was, and how we led the nation in scoring most of the time, but for Gods sake anyone bringing up how we didn't defend or rebound well enough to be truly successful against good competition, and your out of bounds for bashing the guy?
