Its a shame. Had Iowa held on to that 16 point lead at IU with 13 minutes to go in the game, they would have shared the B1G Championship.

Megan should be the B1G Player of the Year and National Player of the Year.

However, as coach of the 2019 B1G Champions, Lisa Bluder would have had a great case for B1G Coach of the Year AND National Coach of the Year.

As you can see, she is 1 of 15 semi finalists for National Coach of the Year.

With all of the crap that grabs headlines related to D1 athletics it is truly refreshing to see such a good person have such success and also be recognized for her great play. Major congrats to Ms. Gustafson, she is very deserving of all of the accolades she is receiving. Good stuff!
hope they win the BTT & make a run in the Big Dance.

they will likely host the 1st 2 games in Iowa City; should be HUGE crowds

I just overheard on BTN’s award show that she was NOT unanimous POY from the media. That is so far beyond ridiculous and that voter or voters should have their privilege revoked.
The WBB fans from Nebraska and Minnesota have particular grudge against Iowa, perhaps their media are that way too.

Who else could the the media vote for? Other than Megan, there was only one other player unanimously voted to the first team by the media. That was Kaila Charles from Maryland. I wonder why they don’t publish the individual votes. I wish they would. I think it is shameful for anyone to vote for anyone other than Megan.

And how is it that Hannah doesn’t get even an honorable mention? I think there is a case for her to be second team. Smh

She's BY FAR the greatest basketball player, male of female, in Iowa history. It's beyond measure.

Why do people say things like this? Why is that female accomplishment is almost always made relative to male accomplishment?

She isn't even close to the greatest when compared to the men. She is the most recognized or has win the biggest awards but even that shouldn't be stated. Her accomplishment as the greatest women's basketball player can stand on its own merit. Great for her and great for Iowa.

I said it because I figured most readers would be smart enough to not interpret it literally.

I think it's a fair statement. Of course she's not better when compared directly to someone like Roy Marble or Ronnie Lester (she's not going to win any one-on-one games against these guys, for example)...but that's not an apt way to try and get a handle on the relative "greatness" of players of different genders. I think the better way to to judge them would be to ask "who was more dominant against their level of competition?" Similar to how you might compare baseball players of different eras. And if this is the measurement, then I would say yes...Megan is likely the greatest basketball player - female or male - to put on an Iowa uniform. She has dominated the competition like no other and has put up ridiculous video game-like numbers for the past two years. No Hawkeye male player has done the things in men's basketball that she has done in the women's game.

Anyone know who from the media did not vote for Megan. That is pathetic. Probably someone from the Washington Post out here who covers Maryland.

That was my inference in the earlier post where I noted that the only other player to be unanimously recognized on the B1G first team [by the media], was a player from Maryland. The individual results are not made public that I know of. It is incomprehensible how anyone else could be considered the B1G Player of the Year. Shameful and irresponsible even.

Hannah deserved recognition also. Fourth in the B1G in FG% and among the leaders in scoring & rebounds.

To answer your first question, because many of us believe it. Interesting then that in your next question, you use the word "accomplishment".

This is one of the better teams in Iowa women's basketball history.

The 1993 team is the only Iowa team to make the Final Four.

This year's team, right now, is looking at a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

I would also agree. The point is that no other [basketball] player (male or female) has “stood out” more among their peers. For argument sake, let me challenge responders with these questions regarding objective metrics of achievement: What other player in Iowa, B1G, or national basketball history has had 82 career double doubles, and has averaged a double double for their career? Who in B1G (or any) conference history has won 23 player of the week awards? Who has averaged 70+% FG shooting for an entire season (with her number of shot attempts) and almost 2/3 of their shots for their entire career. How many players own their respective school’s career and single season scoring and rebounding records? Which Iowa legend was B1G Player of the Year, not once but twice, and was a National Player of the Year (or candidate). Who has lead (or been among the leaders) in national season statistics in as many as eight categories for two consecutive years? (That does not include the often overlooked but perhaps most important statistic ‘points per shot attempt’.)

I have been an Hawkeye fan for decades and I cannot think of anyone, male or female, who has so completely and obviously ‘stood out’ [above all] among their respective peers in so many objective measurable ways as Megan has. In my mind, Megan is without any doubt, the GOAT Hawkeye.

During the win over IU this happened:

Looks like she also went over 400 rebounds for the season. Make an the B1G finals (2 games) then make an Elite 8 run (4 games) and she has a realistic shot at scoring 1,000 points in one season. Probably need a Final 4 run or championship game to hit 500 rebounds in a season. That is an outstanding season. No reason why she should not be the national player of the year.
