Megan Gustafson: Naismith, AP, USBWA, ESPN & Honda National POY! Lisa Leslie Award! 2x B1G POY!

Looks like she also went over 400 rebounds for the season. Make an the B1G finals (2 games) then make an Elite 8 run (4 games) and she has a realistic shot at scoring 1,000 points in one season. Probably need a Final 4 run or championship game to hit 500 rebounds in a season. That is an outstanding season. No reason why she should not be the national player of the year.

After tonight's game:
832 points this season &
402 rebounds

83 career double doubles

That looks like a foul. :) Did she make the shot anyway? :)

It doesn’t just look like a foul, it definitely is a foul (no question about it)... and it looks [to me] to be intentional. I was/am wondering also if it was whistled. It’s no wonder her arms are so red (and scratched) after each game. I hope the officials watch these players more closely and put an end to this kind of “dirty” tactic.

The worst call was late in the 4th when MG was fouled, no call, the ball goes off of her hand out of bounds. They initially called Iowa's ball, but they reviewed it and rightly so, gave the ball to Indiana. That one could have really hurt.

That's the problem. I'm sure you have watched enough Big Ten WBB to know all the long time officials. You can tell how the game is going to go when you see who is assigned. For last night, Mark Zentz is all no blood no foul. Kevin Pethtel always seems to have it out for Doyle. And Barb Smith was the only fair ref in the threesome. I'm just glad the Iowa women have developed the toughness to play through however bad the officials are.

The Big Ten has the same problem with officials in women's BB as in men's. I'm sure Coach Bluder would like to see it changed too, but the allowing of dirty tactics has gone on as long as I can remember.

I don't know in regards to this particular photo.

In the 2nd half, IU was almost playing dirty. One example: when Megan was not looking, an IU big came at her with her arms up & hit her at the FT line, knocking Megan back, and nothing was called.

She's not having a great game tonight scoring wise, but her defense has been pretty strong. If she can get on track shooting, we should steamroll Rutgers.

Why do people say things like this? Why is that female accomplishment is almost always made relative to male accomplishment?

She isn't even close to the greatest when compared to the men. She is the most recognized or has win the biggest awards but even that shouldn't be stated. Her accomplishment as the greatest women's basketball player can stand on its own merit. Great for her and great for Iowa.

I’m not surprised you’re triggered by this.

Ah the word triggered. Used by simpletons everywhere.

The need to try and compare women excellent within their own field to men diminishes women you dope. She is great all in her own within women's athletics without trying to make some ridiculous cross reference to men.

She is the national player of the year. That should be celebrated. She is the leading scorer all time for the womens program. That is tremendous and should be celebrated. Saying she is also the leading scorer for the men is nonsense and is disrespectful to her and to the men's program. She wouldn't be the leading scorer of much if she played against men. Sorry that hurts tour feelings.

She is a great all time player for Iowa. That is awesome. Don't diminish it by trying to turn it into something it isn't.

I don’t see where anyone said any of these things....

What was originally posted that you responded to:

"She's BY FAR the greatest basketball player, male of female, in Iowa history. It's beyond measure."

What you are inferring from what was originally said:

"Saying she is also the leading scorer for the men is nonsense and is disrespectful to her and to the men's program."

What?!

I'm confused, Megan is awesome, you're kind of derpy and picking a fight where there was none... that's on you. This whole thread is a Megan Gustafson love fest, so **** off with your drama.

Why is comparing a women’s basketball player to men’s basketball diminishing, disrespectful, and ridiculous? Nobody said she would be all that if she played in the men’s game. They’re comparing her dominance in the women’s game to some of the best in the men’s game. It’s done all the time and used for reference points.

It’s what he does. Picks a fight where there was none. Does it all the time

Then stop saying it. There is no reference point. None.

Not picking a fight. Stop saying something that isn't true . She isn't the leading scorer for the men's program. She hasn't scored more points than men. She is the all time leading scorer for the women's team which is more than enough. She is the national player of the year for women's basketball.

Her accomplishment on that is more than enough and should enjoy celebrated

And your comment is stupid that she is the best player in any sport at Iowa.

When was she announced as the national player of the year?

Hasn't happened yet but it should. I am simply stating my belief she is the national player of the year regardless of what gets voted. The big ten hasn't ever had a player of the year at the national level. Megan should be the first especially when you look at who else is nominated and their stays compared to hers. Like anything though what should happen is always what does happen. So right now I will refer to her as the national player of the year because her play warrants that.

Listen this comparison to men to augment respect for female accomplishment isn't appropriate. The main reason being that female accomplishment is worthy all by itself and should be recognized and celebrated as such. The other reason is that opening up the comparison to men does just that ...brings in the comparison. Despite what certain femisnists have been selling there isn't a viable comparison. Megan wouldn't make the men's team let alone score like she has. So stop making the comparison. It leads to ridiculous outcomes like has happened in Connecticut where two boys that identity as girls taking the top two spots at the state meet in track and field.

Men are better at sports. Megan could beat me in basketball. Almost certainly could even when I was young and a pretty good athlete. The thing about playing at this level though is you aren't playing against the 95 percent....you are playing against the too 5 percent. Her accomplishment shouldn't be colored against anything but that...because the top 5 percent in any of the women's sports wouldn't even come close to the top 50 percent of men in those sports.

No, she’s just the all-time leading scorer for Iowa period. You don’t have to like it, but it’s the truth. It is a reference point whether you like it or not. They’re using it to promote her for player of the year and to show her accomplishments. Why so much hate for it?
