Megan Gustafson: Naismith, AP, USBWA, ESPN & Honda National POY! Lisa Leslie Award! 2x B1G POY!

The ISU chick is for sure better than Gus! Just like Lanning was better than Jewel. Just like Chase Allen is better than Fant and Hock were. Just like (Puff-Puff) Park was better than Stanley. Just like JaQuan Bailey is better than A.J.....
Apples & Oranges there...we are comparing POY vs POY. One is the leading scorer in the country and the other is the most versatile player in the country and better defender. Gustafson scores nearly all her points inside 10 feet while Carleton scores from everywhere.

I've been trying to analyze where MG's season rates in terms of the best years in NCAA Women's history, and came across an old Drake name from when I lived in Iowa, who I never heard of: Wanda Ford. Her stats from '86 are mind-blowing: 30.6 ppg, and 16.9 rpg. Does anyone have any memories of her?

Outstanding night, your gal pretty much locked up the national POY award, right? 13 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Oh and 5 turnovers in a 18 point loss.

statelyred will be back when Iowa loses to let us know that Iowa State's player was better all along.

Not really though.

Gustafson > Carleton.........Got eem.

Your last sentence borders on stupidity. How many centers are there in WBB that are 6'3" or taller? 50? 75? 100? More? I don't know the answer, but if it's so easy to lead the nation in scoring 2 years in a row, this year leads the nation in FG percentage, and is in the top 4 or 5 or 6 in all other categories, why isn't someone else doing it? There are several players in the country that score from everywhere. By the way, Megan Gustafson has a pretty nice shot from the 15 foot range as well. (I really shouldn't mention MG is 1 of 2 from 3 pt range as well. ho ho ho)

Gustafson has 897 points and 424 rebounds so far this season. Here's to hope she gets 1000 points and 500 rebounds, which means Iowa will have been in the championship game:)

The Iowa women are ranked #8 in the country.

Here are Megan's National Ranks:
#1--28 PPG
#1--69.6 FG%
#1--369 FGs Made
#1--897 Total Pts
#2--424 Total Rebs
#4--13.2 Reb/Game

I hope for a couple things:

* That the @NaismithTrophy & @WoodenAward voters are not biased & that they don't ignore these stats when they vote.

* That we are not matched up with a team where they don't have to double team Megan. Our offense is so much more effective when they can play inside out.

Recently there have been several nice videos on Gustafson. Iowa coach's show on KCRG last Sunday had one, and the recent BTN women's report had one.

Those numbers are so ridiculous that it will take a very special player, playing at a consistently high level for 3 or 4 years to break those records. We're talking "Joe DiMaggio 56 game hitting streak" type of untouchable records.

Statelyred,
Did Carleton make all defensive team? I believe Gufstafson did. I did see that she is projected to be drafted in 2nd round.

As a Michelle Edwards fan, I have been a little slow to see the towering historic greatness of the season MG has been having. But as the season has progressed, MG's scoring season has become the best in BIG history. Compare her to the previous 2 best in BIG history (not counting MG's 2018 season):

MG 897 points; 28 ppg; eFG% 69.7%
Rachel Banham - 914 points; 28.6 ppg; eFG% 54.2%
Kelsey Mitchell - 889 points; 26.1 ppg; eFG% 55.2%

MG's season also compares favorably to what many consider the two best scoring seasons in NCAA W history:

Kelsey Plum - 1,109 points; 31.7 ppg; eFG% 60.9%
Jackie Stiles - 1,062 points; 30.3 ppg; eFG% 61.6%

Finally, while I think Iowa fans know that Coach Jensen was a great player at Drake, her numbers are also historic:

Jan Jensen -- 888 points; 29.6 ppg; eFG% 57.7%

I haven't seen the defensive team listing yet with Gustafson.

CLIMBING HAWKEYES: No. 8 Iowa has its best ranking in 23 years after winning the Big Ten tournament with a victory over Maryland. The Hawkeyes were last this high in the opening poll of 1996, when they were sixth.

From the ESPN story:

Gustafson is the Hawkeyes' all-time leading scorer (2,700 points) and rebounder (1,403), and one of the more dominant players in Big Ten history.

At 6-foot-3, Gustafson has great hands and an unrelenting commitment to trying to get open and provide a target for her teammates. Never mind the double- or triple-teams, Gustafson battles through the defense. She is shooting 65.5 percent for her Iowa career, and she has sent many a discouraged defender to the bench.

The Hawkeyes (26-6 overall, 14-4 in Big Ten) defeated Maryland 86-73 in their regular-season matchup in Iowa City. Gustafson had 31 points and 17 rebounds in that game. In the rematch in the Big Ten final, the three Terps who primarily guarded Gustafson all fouled out.

"Megan is so strong, so physical, and just a very difficult matchup, obviously, for us," Frese said. "It just really impacted us because of just the tremendous foul trouble that we were in.

"She's just that good. The first time we played them, we tried to run a lot of triangle-and-two and different looks at her, and it didn't pay off. We tried to front; we tried to have great help-side defense."

Frese's laments were expressed by all of Iowa's opponents. Defenses were set up specifically to slow her down, but she had a double-double in every game but two, when she just missed on the rebounding side.

Bluder has watched Gustafson grow into a Hawkeyes legend.

"Nothing she does surprises me anymore," Bluder said. "Whatever we give her, she just goes after it and she does it.
