JC running back M. Sargent is at the University of Iowa.https://iowa.rivals.com/news/juco-rb-enrolls-at-iowa
The 5-foot-11, 218-pound RB played at Iowa Western CC this past season in a very competitive league which showcased many JC All-American's. Sargent carried 205 times for 1,454 yards and 14 TD's,13 receptions for 104 yards and 2 recieving TD's, he is a JUCO 1st Team All-American. College Recruiter said: Sargent is liquid fast and can turn on a dime in different directions. He is very hard to tackle and if he receives the ball in open field, he is impossible to catch. Sargent is a proven college runner and will work well into the Iowa Hawkeye gameplan. He is a opening day starter if needed and will bring many cheers to Kinnick Stadium. Recruiting Graded: A 4*

Yes. If you listened to all of the people on this board, they had a higher fascination for Brock.
Of course they do. Iowa fans have been following bricks high school career when Iowa started recruiting him.. then all of a sudden Iowa takes this kid out of junior college.. either way it doesn’t matter how good a back is if the o-line in front of it sucks.. Iowa has 4 lineman committed in this class with 2 being 4 stars by atleast one recruiting service..

Unreal these threads. If ISU had a thread on their board discussing why Brock was a much better choice compared to one of their recruits who committed to Iowa, you guys would be all over them with the "sour grapes" and "little brother syndrome" things. You make our fan base look scared.

They do go to cyclonefanatic and go into the I. State rivals threads.. heck 1,000 pages of dissing Iowa and who Iowa recruits making fun of kids..

Is he proven because he did well at a CC?
Hardly b1g competition lol.
He might be better, I haven't watched them to see. Either way, talking about what he did vs some no name CC doesn't do much for me....

But you have to admit, it's a higher level of competition than high school. So it's probably fair to say he's more proven than Brock right now. Of course how well either will perform in D1 remains to be seen

Strohmeier runs a good ship. His roster is littered with P5 guys who are working on turning around their academics. They also allow for other talents, like Easley and Van Ginkel to raise their profile (guys who don't have academic issues but who floated through recruiting a bit too much under the radar).

Just some data to chew on:

Florida Class 4A (schools with total enrollment of 681-1,114)
Sargent (SR Year): 2100 yards - 27 TDs - 171 carries- 12.2 ypc

Not sure how that compares to anyone else we were recruiting, but those are hefty stats for high school.

His film looks good. A powerful back with good speed, good hands, and can block.

I am really surprised he didn’t have more offers.

Van Ginkel was at USD, not IWCC.
EDIT: Disregard, I was wrong

As for the original question, neither are proven at all. Sure, Sargent's faced a little better and more advanced competition, but he was also playing for a JUCO powerhouse with lots of talent around him. I'm not too worried about losing Brock, but to say Sargent is comparable when he is just a walk-on with a handful of offers is just blind homerism.

Is Mekhi a walk-on? Does anybody know for sure?

Also, Louisville had an offer out to Mekhi, but there were some issues with it (like he had to be a greyshirt ot something).

I’m pretty sure that Blair or Tom stated that the assumption was that there would be a scholarship waiting for him when he got here. I think that was before a few people had openly left and/or started tweeting.

He reminds me of James Butler honestly. Similar measurables and runs like him. He might be a touch faster. Obviously the type of back our coaches want.

Who cares about the ISU guy. :)

Good grief, we Iowa fans wanted Brock. He looks like a great prospect and it’s a very good get for them. ISU runs the new RPO system and they do good things with their running backs. Montgomery is a really nice player. It didn’t work out for the Hawks for whatever reason. I’m still excited for Sargent and Goodson but I was hoping we would land Brock at some point in the process. We don’t need to sit here and act like we didn’t want him. ISU’s recruiting is significantly improved under Campbell and that’s the new reality. However, I do agree with Steve Deace and could see Notre Dame getting rid of Kelly and Campbell becomes the new coach.

His tape looks good. He blocks with enthusiasm. Good combo of unexpected power, balance after contact, and tough to get down.

Where did you get that from? Your own scouting report? A college coach actually used those words?

Well I don't know how "proven" Sargent is but at least he played significant snaps and put up impressive numbers during his JC season. Compare that to ISU's 6th year QB phenom who held a clipboard during his JC tenure.

They wanted Brock up to a point. When Goodson told the coaches he was coming they got the back they rated higher. It all comes down to evaluation. At the end of the day the coaches have to trust their own evaluation. Time will tell who was right. Both teams got good backs. Sargeant is impressive, I'm glad he's at Iowa.

I’ve seen this multiple times on here but Iowa State does not run the RPO and they would be crazy to do it with Kempt.

Honestly I think if Campbell were being honest he has a ton of respect for the way Ferentz gets stuff done and would love to emulate him at Iowa State.

I like Sargents potential alot. He has that prototype body for a strong runner in the B1G. His speed is decent and agility is too. I'd only go so far as to say he is a proven Juco back right now, but I think we will soon get a taste of his abilities and see 3 years of them. Then we be able to decide if he has proven himself as a capable college back. I'm looking for him in the top 3 rotation this coming season and its possible he becomes the top guy if he really has "the juice".

What a silly discussion. The truth is its all potential at this point. Some 4 stars bust, and some 2 stars end up All Americans...like David Montgomery.

Iowa wanted Brock, pressured him to commit before he was ready and when he wouldn't they canceled his visit and went with Goodson. There's just not that much mystery here. From reports I'm hearing/reading, Brock has been an ISU lean for quite some time...though NW actually made a real run at him thanks to Ayeni.

How does that compare to a dude that played at an 8A School in Florida, and a 4A School in Utah? A kid that as a Sophomore in Florida ran for 1,011 yards and 14 TDs. As a JR in Florida ran for 2,116 and 32 TDs while leading his team to a State Championship. After moving to Utah he became a triple option QB and rushed for an additional 1,788 yards and 23 TDs while averaging 12.7 ypc on the way to a Utah State Title?

And for the record, that's exactly what Campbell SHOULD do - emulate Iowa. There is no way Iowa State is going to "out-B12 the B12", but if they played more of a power football style they'd be a bit different than the rest of the conference and would fit more of their recruiting base for lineman. For the record, I think this is what they're doing.
