Why is the men's game divided into half instead of quarters? I'm sure that this is not the first time someone has asked this question, but somehow it just doesn't make sense.

Probably TV timeouts. Didn't they test quarters in the NIT a few years ago? I'm all for it personally.

It's just strange that evey league, both young the woman's game,, the NBA, and the Olympics play in halves instead of quarters. But whatever I guess.

Actually, if you're a purest, then you would favor 2 halves vs 4 quarters as that was how the game was designed by Dr. Naismith. Apparently, the reason they didn't move to quarters when all other levels did was to keep the scores closer. Remember this happened when there wasn't a shot clock so teams could hold the ball for longer periods without being forced to go to a jump ball to start the quarters.

They tested as you said in the NIT. Can still do the TV timeouts with quarter. Can have one under 6 or under 5 in a quarter, then they can make the quarter break a bit longer to cover for having 3 TV timeouts in a half instead of 4.

The upside of quarters is the team fouls reset. With halves, if a team commit 6-7 fouls in the first 10 mintues of the half, they spend 10 minutes defending in the bonus and game can turn into a FT contest. Not that way with quarters.

Haven't heard why they don't move forward with it.

TV timeouts every 4 minutes - I'm not sure if quarters would make that much difference in the game (depending of course on what other changes they would make).

I guess two more chances for a buzzer-beater. Might be a good thing.
