Season is over. Time to focus on a new coach

I don't know....was Hoiberg qualified to coach a Big 12 team when ISU hired him? Gatens actually has more experience coaching than Hoiberg did when ISU hired him. That seemed to work pretty well for them. Not saying it would work in this situation, but it's not like it's not been tried and worked before either.

I think it's also safe to say, TJ Otz, was the man behind the scenes. If Gatens gets an assistant coach or 2 like that, go for it.

I didn’t watch last night but I’m curious, did Fran look like an absolute jackass once again standing there with his hands in his pockets all game?

Gatens has no shot. I wouldn't mind him staying on staff but no shot at HC.

0% chance we land Pearl. No reason to leave a place you are soaring and getting paid.

Iowa has two great options imo in DeVries and McCollum that are realistic hires. One will be more expensive than the other but I think both take the job if offered.

You think Matt Gatens is qualified to be the head coach of a Big Ten team?
Exactly, he was the best player (mediocre) on some horrible Hawkeye teams, why anyone would think that he would be a good coach is beyond me. It is more likely his dad is working the AD to get him the job. His dad is a notorious bully and has been doing it for years, high school, Lickliter.

I don't think Devries is realistic.

If he can recruit, McCollum could be a superstar at this level.

Still think the next coach has to have shown success with recruiting inner-city athletes. The Raveling experiment didn't work because he was a crappy coach and so we over-compensated with what we thought was an innovative x's and o's guy. And Dr Tom proved to be just that in the short-term but ultimately could never recruit the inner-city, which let's face it, is a necessity.

I watched the Drake game last night and while they do look fundamentally sound I can't help but think McCollum just might be too nerdy for recruiting. I know it's a weird take, but Dr Tom was nerdy too and it hampered recruiting and he could never get over the hump because of it.

DeVries was the lead recruiter at Creighton and has proven an ability to get athletes. McCollum's lack of experience is just too big of a risk IMO.

Dr Tom was a much better recruiter than given credit for. And he was also a great developer of talent, especially bigs. And pt guards. Dr Tom was still recruiting at a pretty high level when he got his nuts cut off with Ray Thompson.

And why do Hawk fans keep bringing up Steve Forbes? He hasn’t really done that much.
lol

Anyone who has ever driven on I-80 would apparently crawl through a mile of broken glass to land this job....(?)

Some of these names....smh.

Gotta think young and hungry, with the ability to excell in the NIL/portal landscape.

If they have proven tourney success at any level, all the better.

Fvck it, let's go crazy.

Before, when this shit wasn't above board, I NEVER would have imagined myself saying or even thinking this before, but now there's no reason to worry about 'getting caught cheating' or 'morally objectionable actions' when it comes to recruiting or snagging portal prospects, so ................

Go get Rick Pitino - or someone like him.

Yeah, I said it. Look what he's turned St. John's into. He had them trending up last year and now they're 11-1/20-3 in the Big East and knocking off ranked teams regularly.

It would certainly cost the UI some money to make that happen. His buyout. Fran's buyout. Devries contract at Iowa. Put them together, that's one spicy meatball.

McCollum would be the less expensive choice.

I heard this second hand, but a dad of a kid being recruited said it will be Gatens. We will see, I guess. I wondered how Fran is getting commits when most likely he won't be here next year.
Gatens as next HC??

Sorry, but that's a hard pass for me. What real experience does he have?

There is a VERY short list of who I don't want to replace Fran, and MG is on it. Not before he gets some HC experience at a lower D1 level, at least.

Don't mess around. Get Bruce Pearl. He will have this place rocking for a few years. Then pass the torch to a protege / assistant, who can lead from that point on, with no drop off.
As much as I'd love to see it, I think that ship sailed a long time ago.

I'm sure Pearl appreciates his time in IC, but that was over 3 decades ago, and it's not like he's an Iowa alum or native. I just doubt his Iowa connection from the past is nearly as big of a pull for him as I wish it was. Plus, he's got it rolling at Auburn, and he's 64. Why leave now?

It sounds like Devries would definitely cost more. Higher buyout than McCollum presumably, but I don't know the exact numbers. I'm also assuming it would take a higher base salary to get Devries than McCollum. I don't know that for a fact, though.

But, regarding a contract, Iowa will be paying SOME coach a salary whether it's Fran, Devries, or McCollum. To me, the contract is kind of a moot point. If Beth makes a move, the Fran buyout is what it is, so same deal. Or that's my viewpoint.

So to me, unless I'm misunderstanding, it's mainly a matter of the difference in cost between the Devries and McCollum buyouts. Again, I don't know the numbers.

What I really don't want to see is Beth just promoting from within every time there's an open position with one of the major programs rather than keeping options open nationally. It already happened with the women's hoops teams. If it happens again if/when Fran is gone (Gatens promoted to HC), that would not be a great sign IMO. Same for the football program whenever KF retires. That's all cart before horse, though. Just have to see what she does when the time comes.

Exactly. No matter what there’s a buyout. We always act like we have to have every coach stay until his contract ends in 2040. It’s time.

All good points. Also worth keeping in mind that the athletic department is currently working to come up with the $20.5 million to pay players next year when revenue sharing comes online.

Correct, and if Fran does leave on his own, there would be no buyout (ideal). Again, whoever the next coach is has no effect on that end of it.

Yeah, I agree with you there. I guess my point was when you pile them all up, it's going to cost the UI probably around $5.5-7 million a year for the next 3 years or so, with the buyouts, maybe more. $2 - 3m for the salary, $1.5 - 2m for Fran's buyout, $2 - 3m for Devries. (I'm sure the McCollum buy has to be less, a 10 second search on Google says he's making $275K this year). On a pure salary basis just for the new coach, they could probably sign McCollum for less money, at least upfront. So, overall, the Devries hiring would have to cost the UI more. To sign McCollum. it would probably cost the UI $3.5 - $4.5m over that same time period. Best reasonable speculation. I favor Devries, but it's only because I know more about him.

Agreed. Maybe Fran will leave on his own and save that part of the cost.

I think a guy like McCollum has a chance to be the next Bo Ryan or Bruce Pearl. Guy who paid his dues for several years at the lower level, won multiple national championships there, then got his shot. I'd for sure be in favor of that.

Actually in Hoiberg's first year coaching at ISU, I think Bobby Lutz was the experienced guy behind him. Otz was seen more as the lead recruiter.

Sadly, I think there's less than zero chance of this happening.

Just wish he had done something to earn that buyout this season, other than seeing how much pocket lint his hands and fingernails could collect during games.

All of this discussion about a new coach has gotten me more interested in Iowa basketball than I have been for a while. Is that wrong? I almost feel guilty, at least a bit disloyal, even writing this.
Lol, same here! I've been posting a lot more the last few days than I have in a quite a while. The possibility of change gives hope. It sucks because I'd rather be talking about a big win, or looking forward to an upcoming Sweet 16 or Elite 8 game. There hasn't been much positive to discuss in a while.

Agreed. I think he’s one of those guys who just wins at a high level wherever he is

Same.

I'll stand by what I've said before: Short of a title run, there is nothing more exciting in college sports than the hiring of a new coach. Hope runs in abundance.

The guys who run message boards love this.

??? And they'll have a lot more money coming in from the new media rights deal. It's revenue "sharing". If there wasn't alot more money coming in, the they wouldn't be sharing that much...Not to mention we had FOUR teams in the CFP. I believe the conference gets 4 mil per team and another 6 for teams reaching the semi's and final.

Dr. Tom was an OK recruiter and one very important reason he was let go, was his system was not appealing to high end recruits and he lost some really great Iowa players to other mid west schools because of of his hockey style substitutions, and for being a great developer of talent, that process of now obsolete as so many Iowa fans have turned to the instant gratification as the portal and multiple transferring allowed by the NCAA to improve teams to final four level as soon as like every year.
Fran is behind the times and it's time to move on as he has had 15 years to get Iowa to the second week of the NCAA tournament and it appears that his style of coaching is not only lacking in teaching defense, but rebounding as well.
If you can't teach the fundamentals of college basketball then you shouldn't be paid the big bucks to coach at the Big Ten level, especially for as long as Fran has been at Iowa.
Iowa and their fans deserve better, it's time for Fran to move on, thank him for his time spent at Iowa and hope he enjoys retirement or finding another school to resurrect from the ashes of a failed coach.
Fran is a good coach, not great, just doesn't seem to be the coach that can elevate Iowa to a level that a majority of it's fans would like to see. Carver needs to get back to the excitement level that Iowa men's basketball was during the 80's, 90's. or even during early 2000's, and if possible equal to the woman's team. Make it possible Beth....

We ain't getting any younger man.

Life's too short to keep giving a coach 15-25 year leashes to 'settle in' and make the Sweet16, let alone win once there - or the playoffs in FB.
I agree, but Pitino is and has always been an East Coast guy. He ain’t coming to Iowa. I’m confident we can find a great coach.

Defense and rebounding is mostly effort and hustle. The majority of time we get out hustled because Fran is a shit coach
Effort and hustle certainly play a part.

But defense and rebounding is mostly about habits (including effort), positioning, technique, teamwork/communication, game planning/personnel/execution. This is all achieved through coaching.

Yes, effort is important. But if it's misdirected and not choreographed, it can actually be more harmful to a defense than a lazy closeout and sagging off your man

Spot on. I may not like the Cyclones but it’s hard for me not to admire how they play defense. Everyone moves together like they are attached to the same string. Complete opposite of Fran’s teams. They look like a group of lost dogs chasing their tales.
