Minnesota 10 seed in Des Moines...

Minnesota should be playing in Columbus and Iowa should be in Des Moines.

couldn't disagree more, a 10 seed didn't earn and doesn't deserve a virtual home game. I don't like the shift the committee made several years ago that places an emphasis on keep teams closer to their home base. Except for 1 and 2 seeds, teams shouldn't benefit from playing in their backyard in the NCAA tournament. This tournament generates billions, ship teams out to opposite ends of the country, eliminate even the slightest hint of a home court advantage.

Exactly. So why does Minnesota basically get a home game?

Hard to consider a 250 mile trip out of state as a home game, but I get your point. That was part of my point above...no teams should get any hint of a home court advantage except the top 2 seeds. These games all sell out if I'm not mistaken and the tournament generates billions..ship these teams out to different regions instead of trying to keep teams closer to home in the opening rounds. 7 seed Cincinnati shouldn't be playing in Columbus and certainly 10 seed Iowa shouldn't be playing in DSM.

I think it’s some rule that they since Minn only played Mich St once they could be in that slot.

I’d assume if Iowa had only played them once we’d be in that spot.

Because they travel so well, I would consider Iowa State playing in Kansas City a home environment. I guess it all depends on the specific fanbase to make that happen.

I agree with you.

Normally the higher seeds benefit by being closer to home. This year #7 Cincy and #10 seed Minny are benefiting; has the Selection Committee been asked why Cincy and Minny are benefiting this year?

Conversely, you have to think that the city of Des Moines is hoping a lot of hotels get booked by Minnesota residents

But then again, it is only a 7 hour drive ROUND TRIP so Goofer fans don't necessarily have to stay overnight

#2 seed Mich State can't be too happy about this because Minny could very well knock off L'ville and then Goofer "nation" might be making its way to Des Monies on Friday night and Saturday morning

#2 seed Tennessee can't be too happy about Cincy being an hour away from Columbus because based on the odds, it will be Cincy vs Tennessee on Sunday

I hope the Selection Committee was asked why they put teams where they put them.

Why award a 10 seed (Minny) and a 7 seed (Cincy) with home court advantage?

Didn't Wells Fargo sell out a long time ago for this event?

Who bought the tickets? Clown fans and Des Moines area residents? If so, I wonder what the secondary market will be like and what the scalping outside the arena will be like.

#10 Iowa playing vs. #7 Cincinnati in Columbus is unfortunate for Iowa, but not what I would call unfair (pretty much exactly the same as last time we played vs. Cincy in Indianapolis). What definitely IS unfair is #2 Tennessee being set up for a potential 2nd round game against Cincinnati in Columbus. Don't know how that was considered ok, and I can't for the life of me figure out why the venues of the Tennessee and Kentucky pods aren't switched. I know putting the bracket together is complicated, but that seems like a no-brainer to me.

I guess Iowa has to fix Tennessee's problem by winning on Friday. :)

Tennessee was sent to Columbus because they received preference over Kentucky as the higher 2 seed. Kentucky was then shipped to The next closest, available site in Jacksonville.

Here’s what I guess happened in Cincinnati’s case. I know they couldn’t be placed in the Midwest because Houston is there and they played three times this season.

They weren’t going to swap them with Louisville and give Louisville a potential home court advantage as a 7 seed in the Regional Semi/Final.

So we are down to swapping with Nevada. I’m guessing they put Nevada in Des Moines, less travel than going to Columbus, and that allowed them to stay in the West region as well.

Maybe they could have jumped them up to a 6 and dropped Buffalo to a 7? But that would have destroyed a potential Buffalo/SJU matchup and God forbid if that happened!

Regardless, placement of teams is a pain in the ass. I don’t envy the committee’s job, other than the pay of course, after doing a mock selection committee on Sunday with a group of guys. I’m glad we can finally get down to just playing some hoops now that all of the speculation is in the past.

Jacksonville may be a bit farther from Knoxville TN than Columbus (~2 hr), but I can't believe it is Tennessee's "preference" to be matched up with Cincinnati as their potential 2nd round opponent there. Since Jax is in the middle of SEC country, they probably have more local Vols fans in the area compared to Columbus, also. Tenn would easily be the local favorite for all games in Jax; Columbus not so much.

But, like I said, their problems are solved if Iowa can win Friday.

does seem like teams that fared well in conference tourneys were rewarded with better locations but not higher seeds than ones that did not fare well. isu good location/region draw. cinci practically a home game. minnesota made a little run and gets des moines. could be coincidence too.

When Gophers lose Friday I wonder where would be a good spot to snag their tickets for Saturday ?

Catch them as they exit the arena,... In past years I've seen fans of losing teams literally give their tickets away,... And if not that they sell them off cheap to the street scalpers for resale....

Stubhub prices for the 2nd and 3rd sessions are already down quite a bit. 2nd session is dirt cheap, I assume due to only one team that’s semi-close.

Scalpers bought huge chunks of tickets are trying to dump them as you’ll see seats groups of 8-12 seats being sold.

It is going to give Des Moines residents a team to root against this weekend. I would love to be in Wells Fargo booing the Gophers and Pitino. That sounds like a lot of fun.

I will keep my eye on that after Thursday’s games. I would expect a glut if the gophers lose. StubHub fees are insane so the price jumps a lot come checkout.

When have the hawks been within 250 miles drive EVER in this tournament?

Minn being there as 10 seed is better than we've ever had regardless of seed.

Twice since the field expanded to 64

1986 Minneapolis
1991 Minneapolis

Next closest in no particular order

1993 Nashville
2005 Indianapolis
2006 Auburn Hills
2019 Columbus
1999 Denver

All other locations have been farther East or West but it looks like we generally get shipped West the majority of the time unless the committee wants us to play Duke in the second round. :D

Edit Minneapolis is actually around 300 miles from IC.

Like another poster said. Thursday night session in Des Moines is dirt cheap on stubhub. Even with fees it looks like $35-$40 gets you in.

didn't the tickets sell out really early once they went on sale? if so, who bought them? Hopeful Iowa and ISU fans? and now they are wanting to unload these tickets?

I assume it was scalpers because they’re getting sold in big groups of nosebleed seats.

You guys are giving Minnesota fans too much credit... do you really think the average Gopher fan could find Des Moines on a map?

There will be tons more Spartan and Wolverine fans this weekend.
No kidding. Most of them still have their fish houses out on the Lake.
