They are obviously down this year with some good young guys redshirting. One thing I found odd was that their entire starting lineup is from Minnesota. Can anyone remember a top tier program having their entire lineup full of in state kids or close to it?

91 Hawks. Zap, brands, brands, streicher?, Reiland, chelsvig, fiser, big o?

The 91 and 92 teams were both close with only the Steiners from North Dakota and Tom Ryan from New York.

That is a bit surprising their entire lineup is in-state kids. Obviously they have some on redshirt or on the pine from out of state, but that's a 1st for me hearing of such a thing. Iowa has definitely had some lineups with mostly Iowan's, but they weren't losing to Indiana as I recall..........................................;)

Kind of brings up an interesting topic. If you were to assemble a team using only wrestlers from the home State of Iowa (or any single State for that matter) how good of a lineup would be had. Could it compete for a National Title?

Current Wrestlers: 25 - Gilman (technically from IA, just school in NE), 33 - Clark, 41 - Grothus, 49 - Sorenson, 57 - Steiert, 65 - Weatherman, 74 - Meyer, 84 - Miklus, 97 - Harrington, HWT - Cabel

Don't know if there is a better substitute for Steiert, Weatherman or Harrington out there.

Ohio -
25 - Tomasello, 33 - Dijulius, 41 - Heil, 49 - Colin Heffernan, 57 - Ian Miller, 65 - Bo Jordan, 74 - Cody Walters, 84 - Abounader, 97 - Wellington, HWT - Walz

Minnesota's doesn't change much but Moore in Zillmer in those big holes surely makes a difference.

125-Petry
133-Brancale
141-Thorn, Mitch Bengston NDSU
149- Short
157- Kingsley
165- Cooper Moore, Clint Poster SCSU
174- Wanzek
184- Hayden Zillmer, NDSU
197-Pfarr
285-Kroells, Stoll

PA
25 - Megaludis, 33 - Conaway, 41 - Evan Henderson, 49 - Rutherford, 57 - Nolf, 65 - Casey Fuller, 74 - Mike ottinger, 84 - Nathaniel Brown, 97 - Zach Nye, HWT - Brooks Black

This is not me being a homer, I'm really asking this for the friendly PSU guys who post here. That lineup took me by surprise. I expected top names across the board and was a little shocked at how far down the rankings I had to go to find someone at each weight. If we did number of ranked guys per weight, well PA, OH obviously are pretty tough to compete with. Top level talent at least in this quick sample actually surprised me how well Iowa would do.

Did I miss some obviously ones PA peeps?

Outside of Thorn and big Pharr, not much quality there. Little doubt they are trending down. The current Steveson on redshirt appears to have been recruited to get a big "in" with the little bro.

Also doesn't look like the Iowa transfer Berge will see the lineup anytime soon. That's why I think Brady ends up in IC.

On another note, I'd keep everyone we currently have (or will have) in our line up over taking the ones inserted because of the state of Iowa ties.

Take half of Michigan's lineup and fill in the holes with half of Mizzou's lineup to get Illinois' best team.
(Not really but damn close)

133- Ryan Taylor, #6/George Dicamillo, #4 over DiJulius, #8
141- Dean Heil, #1
149- Hunter Stieber/Anthony Collica, #10 over Heffernan #8

Re: Steveson
Bobby was ranked #1 at his weight, recruited and already a Gopher commit before Gable made his big splash to start being looked at as a blue chipper.

Minny was the preseason favorite last year. Now losing to IU. Has to be tough for Goofer fans to take. Jammenz puts on his brave face but we all know he is hurting inside. :(

Would Marstellar make the team at 165 or 174? Obviously he isn;t making the PA team at 157 because of Nolf and because of his performance. I would think he would make the team at 165 though based on last year's results.

I thought Jake Short would be a big time stud in college. He looked to have turned the corner this year then gets beat up by the Indiana kids. Here are his senior year at Fargo results. He placed ahead of some pretty decent kids.

1st Place - Ryan Blees of North Dakota
2nd Place - Jake Short of Minnesota
3rd Place - Zach Kelly of Pennsylvania
4th Place - Anthony Valencia of California
5th Place - Brandon Sorenson of Iowa
6th Place - Vincent Corsaro of Indiana
7th Place - Brian Murphy of Illinois
8th Place - Darick Lapaglia of Missouri

The judges ruled that you can't claim Carton because he finished his career wrestling in Iowa.

I'm going to get hammered for this one...

I think he'll be our starter next year at 141. He is a guy with a big motor that has continuously improved since he's gotten here. He was a 33lber that had to get bigger and has had time to do so. It stinks that he was injured earlier this year so he really hasn't had a chance to prove himself. I think He would have a few wins vs. guys Ryan lost to this year if he would have been in the lineup(if healthy). I'd guess if he had been in the lineup all year he would be ranked 12-15 right now.

Because you think the brothers never talk to each other?
WTH! No, the reason I think Brady ends up at Iowa is that Big brother looks to be struggling a bit at both schools. His name NEVER comes up on the Goofs' forum when they discuss a few years down the road with projected lineups. There is something going on that is preventing him from being mentioned.
In summary... Iowa's future is considerably brighter going forward with the POSSIBILITY of a Kem/Marinelli/Berge combo. Way better then a , Stroker/Early/Berge combo. Plus... at Iowa you have a stable coaching staff for quite some time. At Minny after J... not so much.

Yep... looks like Short has gas tank issues and his college offense seems limited. BS majors him this year.

I'm a fan of whomever wins the spot but I do not think it will be Topher Carton at 141 next year for Iowa unless there's an injury. That's nothing against Carton. I just suspect we have someone better.

I was planning to bring this up in this thread. Where are the Minny fans who were so outspoken that Berge would thrive at Minny and come back to haunt Iowa? Or, an even bigger question, where are the Iowa fans who said the same? Is that still going to happen or is it not as likely of a possibility now?

I agree fully that if Carton had not been injured he would have beaten out Ryan this year. I also think BG will beat them all out when he comes back. Carton will have his chance next year. We haven't seen enough of Turk to determine if he will take the spot from Carton. Hopefully Midlands will give us that look.

IDK what to think about 141 next year, even this year its still a pretty big question mark until at LEAST midlands.
Carton and Ryan both got whipped by Long at the Grandview open, Carton got hurt, Ryan didn't, Ryan got the spot by default. Cartons match against Ashnault i'd say he outwrestled Ashnault to be honest, minus giving up that 4 pt tilt, in his 8-4 loss. This season Carton is our best option if he can stay healthy, unless Grothus proves himself against him/competition (which I think will happen).

Next year I think it is between Turk and Carton. Even this season, Turk has a Win over Gross and Ryan has an L.
SR Carton next year may be the best Carton we've seen in his time here, whereas Turk could come out like a ball of fire after getting acclimated to college wrestling during his RS year. Interesting stuff for sure, folks.
