Minnesota

I was planning to bring this up in this thread. Where are the Minny fans who were so outspoken that Berge would thrive at Minny and come back to haunt Iowa? Or, an even bigger question, where are the Iowa fans who said the same? Is that still going to happen or is it not as likely of a possibility now?
I don't recall either of the crowds you mention. Berge's struggles were well documented. The potential impact of Brady's decision makes it a potentially bigger deal, but he is his own person. Broc becomes eligible second semester due to transfer rules. He will be an upgrade over little Pfarr, but a place holder til Steveson steps in next year.

So Berge cut to 84?

I look at it differently...It will give him a measuring stick against tough competition. Say what you want about him but he's a gamer.

I respect your opinion Azchief32. I realize he SHINES when the lights come on, but he's out of his league as a true freshman in this event. If he were to have had a year of experience under his belt, I'd strongly agree with you.

I think he gets a couple of wins but you don't get the opportunity to wrestle the Retherfords of the world that often as a freshman...got to take it when you can get it. I agree, it will be a tough one for him though.

I NEVER stated that he didn't want to go. As a true freshman (redshirts), you ARE NOT allowed to travel with the team, and more importantly you incur all expenses. (Travel, meals, lodging and entry fee)
Seems to me that Evanston, IL (The Midlands), would be much more cost efficient than a trip to Chattanooga TN (The Southern Scuffle), and still provide you a good picture of where you stand as a competitor

That's what I thought too with his post... I don't doubt him because he likely knows more about the Gophers than we do, but I will have to see him at 184 before I believe it. Granted... it's likely his ONLY chance to ever see the lineup.

Broc intends to make 184. Time will tell real soon if he is able to.

Midlands won't see any Gophers, unless something changed. Not sure why.

Fredy can scrap. I don't get why everyone doubts his ability. Everyone is very high on Kemerer(for good reason) and the two have gone back and forth historically.

Lizak, Morgan, Stroker, Early, Steveson would likely be the five extras for the scuffle. If Brancale is still hurt, Morgan the starter and probably slot in Streifel at heavyweight.

Penn States team this year will likely have 7-8/10 starters from Pennsylvania...

25- Megaludis PA
33- Conaway PA
41- Gullibon PA
49- Retherford PA
57- Nolf PA
65- Morelli PA/ Rasheed NY
74- Nickal TX
84- McCutcheon PA
97- McIntosh CA
285- Johnson PA

If you wanted an all PA team then it could look like this....

25- Megaludis
33- Conaway
41- Henderson/ Gulibon/ Racciato/ Chisko
49- Retherford
57- Nolf
65- Morelli? idk
74- idk
84- Nate brown/
97-Nye
HVY- Soloman

Rather interesting because next year Penn State will most likely have the majority of their wrestlers be from a State other than PA.

125- Suriano- NJ
133- Cortez- ILL/OH
141- Gulibon- PA
149- Retherford- PA
157- Nolf- PA
165- Shakur- NY
174- Nickal- TX
184- McCutcheon- PA
197- Cassar- NJ
Hvy- Nevills- CA

That is only 4 guys from PA, and y the by they also have Mark Hall coming in from out of State too, he might push for a spot as a true Freshmen. It is very much possible that the 165 spot get taken from Shakur by a PA guy such as Brill or Joesph, bu you are still onlu talking about a 5 to 5 PA to out of State split. I wonder when that has happened at PSU before.

When we the last time over half of the Hawkeye wrestlers were not from Iowa?

Gilman lived in Iowa so he is from Iowa. That is half the team. When was last time it was over half (6/10)?

J tried to get some of the guys in from what I heard but Midlands had already hit their tourney limit. BTW, Lugo from Edinboro is undefeated...guess who beat him at Fargo? Stroker. He got a TD on Zain and lost to Ashnault by one point at team trials...he hung with both. I like the fact that we have Kemdawg but let's not minimize Stroker or call him a bust...it just makes us look silly.

Possible Corey (Shakur) might lost the spot out to Moreli this season southern scuffle will sort this weight out for them

Pretty sure redshirts can't be part of the extra 5. They have to pay for themselves and be non scorers if they want to go.

Agreed, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him place at the scuffle.

I'm not sure who US is, but me thinks the brush has been painted rather broad in this scenario, if you catch my drift.....

A couple, a few, more than a few, etc. is not "everyone" (as stated by grappler6). I think Stroker had rubbed some people the wrong way during his recruitment or lack thereof from Iowa, and he ends up in Minnesota. That isn't going to endear him to a chunk of the Iowa fanbase. Personally I didn't care one way or the other. He's not an Iowa kid, so we didn't lose a top flight wrestler who is one of our own (I would have liked to have had Kjeldgaard and Mason for instance - wasn't really room for Mack Reiter). If Stroker sucks as a collegian, fine by me. If he doesn't that's fine too, I have zero control over what happens, so I can sleep with a clean conscious either way.........................:D

He is now a Gopher, so the way I see it you're either with us or against us, and he ain't with us so....................................I won't be openly rooting for him, that much I can tell you.

You guys can't not claim Stroker as an Iowa kid while claiming Carton. Stroker spent his entire hs career in IA while Carton only half.
So let's agree Stroker is PA, Carton is IL and Nebraska releases all claims to Gilman.
<spits in hand and extends to shake

Works for me. Carton is not an Iowan. I hearby officially release him back to Illinois. Gilman is an Iowan. So I'm on board with you.

On behave of the people of Ohio, we would like to have back Alex Marinelli then please and thank you (the gaping hole in the Buckeyes lineup at 165 says thank you also).

I can handle this one *hooks suspenders with thumbs, and gives them a quick snap*

Stroker = Gopher = sucky
Kemerer = Hawkeye = not sucky

:)

(both are pretty damn good IMO)

My apologies for speaking broadly and using the term everyone. I really try not to do that as that is something that really bothers me. The minority is typically the case. My bad.

AZ, Thanks for pointin out Lugo, I remember being impressed with him. Didn't put two and two together.

Hell of a name drop there! I'm 30 and imo the two best Iowa hs wrestlers I've seen. They each had there own issues which derailed them in college.

You can't just show up at the Midlands just because you want to.

That would be correct.

McKenna petitioned in last year along with every post grad and redshirt that has ever competed there. That's why they're called "closed" rather than "opens."

Max Thompson has beaten lugo numerous times also.
And Stroker has beaten Thompsen the last two times they wrestled. Kemerer is the best of the three at this point but I think Kemerer had better coaching and partners in PA at Young Guns that got him where he is today. Lets see how Kemerer, Thompsen and Stroker develop. Nothing is a guarantee for any of these young men and they may or may not succeed in college on the mat for many reasons just like many high school super stars before them. Kemerer was ranked as the #8 class of 2015 recruit , Thomsen #15, and Stroker #20. All super stars and well accomplished in high school and I believe they all traded wins against each other over the years. IMO I think all three pan out and have wonderful college careers! Kemerer is the cream of the crop as his accomplishments and top 10 recruit ranking reflect. Iowa boys Stroker and Thompsen are pretty darn tough though.

Agreed on all parts. I think they are all natural 49 pounders too. It will be interesting to see if they all end up there. Obviously we need Sorensen and kem in the lineup next year. Hopefully one grows into a 57. On the other hand I would much rather have to beat zain for a title then imar.

Thomsen is for sure a career 49lbr, Kemerer and Stroker have longer frames and I could see them potentially filling out and moving to 57. Retherferd at 49 or Imar at 57, take your poison, none of these guys beating either anytime soon.

Yep, wasn't trying to get on your case, it's just one of those "always" or "never" deals. I certainly attempt not to do that as well. Al Gore's invention brings out all kinds, so "everyone" is rarely going to be a term that fits appropriately....................... :D

You only get them back in spirit, from the "homeboy" perspective if you will, not in the literal sense.......................;)

I also LOVED another kid over in that area named Jimmy Rodgers. From Oakland-Riverside if I remember correctly. I just thought the kid had "it", and the only time I saw him was at the State Tournament, which I went to each one for quite a stretch beginning in the 70's (I'm not 30 anymore!). I think he ended up at Iowa State and didn't see the mat much, but I sure wanted him at Iowa at the time. Guess that's why Gable was the Coach instead of me!
