Moss

Sorry man I disagree. In my opinion, Fran and staff have more then shown confidence in Moss, more then he deserves at this point. He is the starting SG. He has been in the program for 4 years and still gets run out there to start even though he is a one-dimensional (and even that one dimension is very inconsistent and in fact non-existent a lot of the time) player. He averages 24 minutes a game. Yes, he has the ability to score in bunches but 80 - 90% of the time he is invisible. We have all seen that if by the under 16 timeout he has contributed nothing, that’s likely what he will contribute the rest of the game. At this point, if I was the coach I would feel I gave him more the enough opportunities, bring him off the bench for 10 minutes a game, and make him prove he can give full effort and contribute somewhat consistently.

And then who takes his spot? Dailey? Dailey has somewhat surprised and when aggressive can get to the basket, but, is he really the best alternative to Moss who has the potential to score more points in 3 minutes than Dailey will all year long.

Fredrickson, Ellingson, Oglesby, ...Fran likes to have at least one of these guys on the team at all times.

Other than some potential racial issue this seems an odd comparison.

Ogles was a big recruit, I think around 125 nationally (composite of grades, ranks etc...). Ogles picked Iowa when we were coming off a 10 or 11 win season. Won us a few games with big threes, although never the great shooter for which every one hoped. Became a very good defender by senior season. Ogles was a good, not great, but good player at the Big Ten level.

Brady was not a good player, average at best at the Big Ten level. Certainly not someone that would get many minutes on a good team. Not every recruit is a star. Brady didn't play a lot of minutes and left after three seasons.

None of us have seen CJ play a minute of college ball so its hardly fair to prejudge him.

The common theme is the need for good shooters; and you can never have too many good shooters. Since Iowa is not and never will be a significant attraction for the 5* sure bet recruit Iowa's coaches have to gamble. Not every hand you draw is a winner.

Oglesby was the epitome of the greatest practice player per Fran that could never translate into the game situation.

To say he was a good B1G player is a major misstatement. He was a role player at best due to his lack of confidence shooting and defending in a man on man situation.

Oglesby and Moss would definitely win all blowout game performer trophies. Moss has gotten a little better but Oglesby was a no show unless Iowa was up or down 20. A little ironic that Fleming got Franned before ever getting a chance to play. Between Oglesby, Fleming, Williams and Ellingson I would have to take Brady. Let's hope Frederick does not get added to this list.

I know some people have argued with me about Moss this year - and he is far from the only reason for today and the overall performance the last 5-6 games but he doesn’t need to play anymore in my opinion. He is not good. At best, he shoots well against lower competition but besides that he is a negative in most every way. He is a terrible ball handler, terrible passer, has no court awareness, is inconsistent at best on defense, and if he misses his first few shots he just goes in a shell.

There has been plenty of talk about not having a quick, driving, Defensive PG but not having a 2G that can do much of anything is as big or bigger problem. I’m sure some people will not like what I’m saying but I’ve seem plenty of Moss to know this is all true.
With all due respect, I think this is a bit harsh. He’s inconsistent, but there have been games where he has had incredible impact. I don’t understand why he’s inconsistent. I don’t think it’s lack of skills or basketball IQ. Maybe more of a confidence issue?

OK, I will admit to only seeing about 10 game minutes last night, but I could almost swear I saw IM dribble on our offensive end, turn IN TO the defender, and practically take his hand away as if to hand off the ball to the defender. It was the "least effort needed" steal I've ever seen. Pathetic.

I agree in principle but Moss defers to others when he is open. A 2 guard, especially on this team, needs to be aggressive and drive it / shoot it when an opportunity presents. It's maddening to watch Moss turn down open mid-range shots to kick it back to Bohannon with 10 seconds on the shot clock. When Moss is at his best he has a scorer's mentality and hunts shots. When at his worst he is reluctant to shoot and very passive offensively which makes him an easy guard. Like others, Moss would benefit from a drive / kick guy who can get him some clean looks.

It is baffling why Fran sits Moss for long stretches in the 2nd half even when he has good first half performances. On that point I agree 100% with you.

When Moss hesitates hes bad. That's true of allot of players but its really extreme with him.

Besides the obvious that he needs to not be passing up open shots, on a team that struggles to get open shots, I'd much rather see him pick up multiple charges a game putting his head down and going to the rim than stopping after 2 dribbles and turning around.

When you're not a good ballhandler it helps to go at the rim straight and hard vs trying to set up a cross over.

Its amazing to me Fran canca get him to be more aggressive.

You missed it when JBo got his pocket picked. That was worse.

That aside, Moss had a very good game. Very good. He seemed to be dialed in on both ends.

My comment was about an earlier game...Wisconsin I’m pretty sure.
