Most money you have ever won

He found something - played great Sat and Sun. I like Colin this week.

Got killed on straight win bets the last few weeks.

Had $75 on Horschel to win for like $1000...Herman (the 137th ranked player at the time) comes from nowhere to eek out the win

Had couple hundy on DJ last weekend for a decent profit and Rahm just destroys on Sat/Sunday.

Two big kick in the nuts but it goes with the territory

I need a shower now.

I generally don't gamble. But about two-thirds the way through a lengthy road trip with some buddies many years ago, I found myself down to my last $20 in Reno. Although I needed that last $20 to get me home, my buddies convinced me that since we were in a casino, I had to gamble at least some. So I decided to spend $10 on playing slots and buy peanut butter and a loaf of bread to get me home.

I watched an old lady work three machines simultaneously and unsuccessfully for a long time, and then slide down one machine to the left. I walked up to the machine she had abandoned, and on about my third pull hit it for $100. I happily walked away. One of my buddies stayed to watch the old lady. She was miffed and slid back to the right to start using my machine again. I came back about a half hour later, and my buddy said she had pumped some ungodly amount into machine with no luck during my absence. (He had counted because he was amused, but I can't remember the number.) She slid to the left again. I again walked up and hit the same machine for some decent amount I can't remember on about my seventh pull. I thought the lady was going to murder me.

I ate steak all the way back home to Iowa, but have never hit on anything with a slot machine the rest of my life.

No money and there were no winners, but my name was selected for family pictures when I was about 10. I had a stupid habit of entering my name in every give away at retail stores and dropping the slip into the box. Tried to win boats, vacations, cars, etc..........selected for the family pictures prize. At least my mom(no pics) was thrilled. My Dad and brothers were pissed at me

I have had a few big weekends betting on college and NFL football. I don't typically do super high, single wagers though. Best weekend is probably $2-$3,000.

I won’t a 1989 Pontiac LeMans when I was 13 years old. Unfortunately my dad had to claim since I was under 18. It was a piece of shit car but it’s still cool to say I won a vehicle.
This is how I got my first car!

When I was 15 there was a local used car dealership that was giving away three used cars. There was no limit on the number of entries, so I filled out as many as I could. They drew the winners and I won a 1972 Chevy Impala. This was in 1989, and the car was a little older than me. Still, it was the best of the three they gave away, and it lasted through my senior year. Sold it for $500.

CSB- I was down there for the $30 Donkey tourney a few years back when some Chinese chick hit the bad beat for ~$80k. The guy that beat her got ~$30k, the rest of the table ~$3k. Crazy.
I had something similar happen at an Apache casino in Arizona about 15 years ago.

I had a straight flush (2-6 of clubs) and beat 4 aces. I won $1k, the person I beat won $2k, and everyone else at the table got $400 each. They shut the table down for about an hour while they reviewed the security cameras - they did NOT want to give that money away!

1200 on a bowl pool.
Now my grandma won $100,000 In the 1978 Massachusetts lottery, which is about like winning $325,000 now. They got 10k payments over the next 10 years, which benefitted me because they later helped my parents pay for my braces In the mid 80s. CSB

$61,000 three weeks ago. Gulfstream Pick 6.
Something i wish i would take the time to learn. We have a fairly nice track (really nice Poker Club) up here that has decent purses, pre-covid anyway, but also simulcasts all races. I make some random bets but spent all my time at the poker table so never sat down to really learn to study the horses.

Im actually thinking about starting virtual handicapping course. Something like $25 a head. Three levels. Beginner through advanced. Something like $65 for all three.

I pick my horses by whether they have a term related to alcohol or Iowa in them.

Does this system work?

I won big bucks on Go for Gin at the Derby in 94. Since then, not so much.

In fact, it’s a terrible system.

I won $600 on a single “pot builder” hand once in a 25-cent poker game. But roughly $450 of that pot was my money, the the net wasn’t that much.

I don't gamble, besides NCAA BB tournaments. Won $900 one year with $5 entry and won several hundred in other years. Always just one bracket too.

As far as casinos go, just not my thing.

Walked out of a casino up ~$2000 after a ridiculous night at the craps table (I typically bring ~$150 with me). I'm one of the few on this board, however, who will admit that over my adult life, I have lost a hell of a lot more than I've won while gambling. My last casino bet was about 3 years ago.

Oh, I readily admit that.

Don't play slots or roulette
Down on craps and blackjack
Up slightly on poker
Down on NFL fantasy, but was close (I tracked)
Up substantially on fantasy golf (I track)

I gave up all except fantasy golf and in person poker a long time ago.

I spent two years working hard on fantasy football and couldn’t make it happen.

Fantasy golf my friends is where you want to be:

Recency bias, lack of research by most betters, not understanding talent usually shines through, horses for courses; going for Phil and Tiger love; betting favorites when all they can get you is break even if they top 5; not understanding distinction between GPP formats and undervaluing ownership percentage.

It’s all there.

And three words about a guy that will make you money over the next two years: Rasmus Hojgaard

Not yet. I’ll post my core later this week and @FAUlty Gator and @hexumhawk and others usually jump in too.

I’ve been on the DJ fade train for two weeks and have been getting worked by that decision like a part time job, although Rahm, Finau and Niemann saved me just enough to make it okay last week.

After thinking this through I've made a drastic change.

First, I want a team I LIKE and won't be upset with not having if they go off and play great. Secondly, I want guys who can go real low at any time and have done so this year. Lastly I want people who can win from behind. DJ starts at minus 10. You either have to pick him and end up with a bunch of Lanto Griffins hoping they can make charges. So I wanted a good mix of that. Also, you can't worry about money left on the table with 30 players. After the top 5 they're all the same, so luck is definitely involved.

So...that all said, here's my lineup.

JT
Bryson
English
Finau
Horschel
Palmer

In DFS golf, do you typically try to leave some of your budget on the table to differentiate your lineup from the field? If so, how much?

Always in the GPP millionaire. I try to leave at least 2,000 on the table for most of my entries. If I really like a team, I’ll get closer to the max.

My lineup optimizer allows me to set the upper number. I usually stick with 48k or so.

I’ll also run it at 49.5 to see if there are any lineups I really like that I can’t get at 48k.

I was at Iowa in 1990 and the girlfriend and I went to Davenport for a date. Casino then dinner. I had $40 extra and I gave her $20 of that to gamble. I was done in about 30 seconds. She won $1250 on her last pull of the a lot machine. I got none of that. I did get laid. I guess she did buy dinner.

I was in Reno for a conference. I looked at the Iowa Illinois over/under and it was something like 57. Indiana had Randal El. I put 250 on the over and it covered by halftime. My personal biggest win but I’m not much of a gambler.

at one time? Last night I decided to wander over to the casino and place a few sports bets for today. I was up at the bar having a few drinks and this slot machine kept screaming at me. So I took $40 out and decided to give it a go. Ended up hitting for $5700. Thats the most I've ever won at one time. Not to upset about it.
Do you work at the IRS?

I'm not a big gambler at all, so not any big paydays in my history. I've won my fantasy football league several times and cashed at about $500 each time. I won about $250 in an NCAA BB pool (buy a square scheme). Played NL Hold-em once at a Dubuque casino for about an hour. Bought in for $100 and cashed out with ~$350. I actively played about 4 hands in that whole hour and won each time. Everything else was folded. There's a lot of fish if you find the right room and tables. I may become a semi-regular poker player in retirement, but I'll stick to low stakes because of my somewhat conservative fiscal nature.

EDIT: I almost forgot this payday scheme. I went to Solon Beef Days with tBW many moons ago and we stopped at the Bingo game to try our luck. I immediately noticed that the lazy game worker at the stand was drawing the first 5 numbers from the hopper while people were still choosing their game cards for the next round. I would quickly scan the cards in front of me and choose a couple of cards that had a majority of the pre-drawn numbers on them. We went on to win 5 of the next 6 games or so winning about $50 each time as I recall. At that point a lot of the other players started grumbling about our dumb luck and getting a bit belligerent, so we scooted out of there and gave a bit of it back to the community by purchasing a steak dinner and some brews. Good times.

I won $2400 in one hand at the Horseshoe about twenty years back playing $20-40 limit holdem.

The game was full of Koreans all of whom seemed to work together and were having a great time and bluffing like crazy.

I was dealt a 4-3 of clubs in the bigl blind and called a twenty dollar raise into an already $400 pot) with the whole table in the hand. ... I flopped a tiny little flush when three medium clubs came out.

Yikes, the guy to my right bet, I called and from then on every round of betting was capped. I was terrified, as any club hitting was going to wreck my made hand, but I called all the way. Two guys rivered straights including the small blind and the button. I have no idea what anyone else had as the guy on the button showed his hand first and the guy to my right showed his right away (out of turn) and I watched everyone else recheck their cards and then discard their hands. The dealer was having a hard time controlling the game and started to shove the pot to the button. I yelled at him and declared my Flush which seemed to wreck everyone's fun except mine.

My stack grew by $2400 and the total pot size was around $3000.

I left.

once turned $30 into roughly $900 at the craps table in riverside....

once farted in white shorts, after eating mexican food, with no issue. easily my biggest win

Wow, based on this thread, casinos in Iowa must not survive very long.
I had an ex boss that had a gambling problem. His family had him on a 50,000 a month Limit American Express Card. He would go out every month and take out cash against the card to gamble. Fantastic Blackjack player and could grind out consistent 5,000 wins. But, he would get board and hit the slots. One of those slots that you could bet eight ways. $50, so $400 every pull of the handle. He consistently lost that $50K a month and more.

Black jack in Vegas one weekend playing multiple hands at the Venetian. Couldn’t lose by turning $100.00 each night into $1,500 plus winners both nights. Wife won some too and kept pocketing the 100’s as I was drinking like a fish enjoying my wins until I started losing my $25 piles till I was done for the night/morning between 2 and 3. Walked out with $2k plus after the wife did some shopping at the Venetian Grand Canal Shoppes.

I won $400 once on a Lottery ticket, and cashed out of the slots in Vegas with $700. Not a huge gambler, though.
