NCAA Quarterfinals Thread

After watching Ayala, Eierman, Kem, and Cass gut it out with obvious injuries, everyone who said they didn't show "tough Wrestling" and Medical Forfeited out of the Big Ten's for seeding purposes, can bend over and take it lube free. Penn State bitchers can take it twice. The team was beat up and that happens, but I don't think anyone could or should complain about their toughness and willingness to try and score for the team.

The recurring theme for Bull is being very poor at finishing shots. He has gotten what he earned.
I concur. Ever since he started wrestling to win by a TD he's become more and more susceptible to these 3rd period or OT losses. Like you said, he got what he earned. I hate it for him...but he's allowed the other guys to figure his stuff out.

I agree. Not questioning their toughness at all. Nobody should be.

What does have me confused is how Iowa's wrestlers continually show up at nationals (every year) in shoulder wraps, leg wraps, torn ACL's, etc while Penn St. has never had a single one. In fact, it doesn't really seem like any colleges do except Iowa. That's the part I can't figure out yet.

We have guys fighting injuries day and night come nationals. Nobody else seems to have that problem to the degree we do.

news flash... last year was the exception... not the rule. Last decade has been rough. Today is no surprise to those that have been paying attention.

By paying attention, you mean were aware of the injuries, correct? With a healthy roster we have 5 maybe 6 in the semis and Murin and Marinelli still alive on the backside.

Definitely gutted out some tough injuries, but why are we so beat up?? Not one other team has a quarter of the injuries we have. If you add in Spencer and Brands, we have 6 major injuries. OSU has Ferrari and he was in a car accident, not wrestling related. How is this possible?? We are either not strong enough, over training or so bad at scrambling we put our joints in bad positions to get hurt??

These guys that stall stall stall then steal one with their only takedown is terrible for the sport.
That's a weak ass statement. We need to go out there and take it...something that Alex has not been doing a lot of this season. He's been wrestling to win by a point and it keeps biting him in the ass. This sucks because he was such a bad ass...

OkState actually has Wittlake completely out and I think Mastro had something significant as well. They are battling injuries almost as badly as Iowa.

Honestly, injuries absolutely derailed this season. People pointing the finger at the coaches I think are simply wrong. No doubt in my mind a healthy Lee, Eierman and Kemerer changes this team significantly.

That really brings me to the one part of the program I question - strength program. Other than Marinelli and Murin, the Iowa guys often seem small to me. Even bigger, the incredible amount of injuries that took place. I don't know enough about their strength program to start pointing fingers or calling for firings, but if there is one thing that I think needs some serious analysis and reflection it is how they are training and developing from a strength perspective.

I know others on here have brought it up. After watching this season, and particularly the last few weeks I think I would have to fall in line with their questioning.

Snakebit this year.

Lee: Happened in a match (last year)
Drake: Happened in a match
Eierman: Happened in a match, although his hand factored into it and that happened before the season I believe
Murin: I think before the season started
Kemerer: Before the season started
Cass: In a match

You can't plan around getting injured in a match. If anything, I think practices are way less intense than they used to be....or I should say the intense goes are for shorter time periods.

Can I ask in, and I mean it in a truly polite inquisitive manner, did you wrestle DI? The reason I ask is because I keep hearing fans say things like, shoot, score, go out there and take it, like it is simply a thing you do.

Do you realize how HARD it is to do once you have been scouted? Marinelli's entire offense is predicated on his opponents pressuring back into his ties. NO ONE does that anymore. He is NOT fast and now his only chance at offense is off loose ties with his opponents going mostly backwards. All that would happen in most of those situations, against top opponents is 1- He gets stuck on bottom or 2- He gets taken down.

I get that we all think these guys should be shooting at a high rate and scoring in bunches, but we don't have a bunch of Jordan Burroughs on this team and even PSU doesn't.

Finally, I can PROMISE you Alex is NOT trying to go out and win by a point. He is just not able to get to his offense because the top guys know EXACTLY how to keep him from it...

Thats only part of it... and aside for last year, they have failed to keep pace over the last decade... Whether its coaching or recruiting or performing on the big stage. They have come up short when it matters. Injuries happen sure. But there have been too many wrestlers... too many GOOD wrestlers looking to just get by.

I would absolutely love to be inside of the mind of Dan Gable right now.

Haven't listened to Ironside at all, I can't imagine he is too thrilled about his Hawkeye's right now.
He's definitely not but he's also a tnt loyalist and he won't criticize them publicly which is understandable. But some things need to change and we need all the possible input from people like him we can get.

It would never happen for various reasons... but Burroughs would kick ass in Iowa's corner....

You know I'm actually not that upset about assads performance. Worse lost this year after taking a year off to injury was cochran, and his two losses in this tourney were to all Americans.

We have no strategy. We are perpetually ill prepared. Brands seems to do the same crap after year and we have the same results year after year.
Year after year? Where have you been the last two years? Would have won in 20. Did win in 2021. Would have won this year (yes I really do believe that.). They could have easily won three in a row! But go ahead and be mad if you want to.

Then it's up to him and our staff to adapt and help him develop other offensive attacks. We have failed at that time and time again as a program in recent years. A guy takes away your go-to move, fine, try something else bc there's always something else. Rby wrestles with a hand behind his back, great, beat the shit out of his head and attack the side he refuses to engage with. We just don't adapt.

Yes, injuries really hurt the hawx this year. Who knows whether the story would or would have not otherwise been different. But that aside, I suspect if I went back and looked at previous years' tourney threads, I'd see a lot of the same types of comments as are in this one.

Let me just leave you with this one thought. I'm a Washington Capitals fan. The modern Capitals era did not start with the drafting of Alex Ovechkin. It started with the hiring of Bruce Boudreau, a hockey coach who firmly understood and believed in the core principle that the way you win is to score more points than the other team.

Well we wouldn't have won this year had we won in 2020 because none of the seniors , including Spencer, would still be here without Covid screwing things up.

It's easy for people to only se what fits their agenda...

Cat wants to call out our staff for some sort of substandard training. Can't do that if other teams have injuries too.

Minnesota had a rash of injuries with a deep senior group back in 08 (ish)

Psu has had some injuries in the past but not all at once.

It's a brutal sport and guys get hurt.

Can we look at other options for training? Absolutely, and it would be outrageous not to. Will that make us more healthy in the future? Not a dang clue.

I give that Keickesen kid a ton of credit, he wrestled his ass off from start to finish, and had all kinds of chances but unfortunately most were on the edge (thought he should have had 2 in the 3rd when he covered the other leg on the edge). Really good match by both guys, but Keickesen deserved better IMO.
Would love to see him find his way to Iowa through the portal...
