Nearly 80 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Iowa native Leo Keninger is laid to rest.

Martin Dvorak and 4 friends were drinking coffee 4 decks down when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor bagan. They climbed and crawled on hands and knees to get to top side. They had to jump overboard and swim to Ford Island. After the attack he had his tour extended and served until September of 1945. He went on to serve on USS San Juan where he was involved in 13 sea battles including the Battle of Midway.
After returning home in 1945 he married Daisy Price and they had a daughter who died at birth. He always remembered his friends and his time in the service. He lived in Hills, Iowa until the time of his death. He attended the 50th reunion in Pearl Harbor 1991.

My old " Babe Ruth " coach ( above ) was also a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a tough old SOB who never had any boys, but he loved baseball and coached old school style. More than once he'd pull a kid in mid inning for a dropped pop up or throwing error. He would load most of the team into a station wagon, with half the kids in the back cargo area, as he drove us to the next small town to play. Of course he had a cigarette in his mouth and used language that today's helicopter parent might find offensive. He died in 2004...

Keninger was originally buried as an unknown after dying during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to the USS Oklahoma. HIs remains were identified, and he has been returned home for burial.

I watched a documentary in the past year that told the story of the raising of the Oklahoma in Pearl Harbor. It was almost 2 years to the day that the ship was sunk and then refloated. It was not one of the higher priorities for the Navy to raise again after the attack as it was not deemed to be able to be refitted and used in combat. It was eventually sold for scrap but sadly sunk at sea during a storm in 1947 while being towed from Hawaii to the west coast.
