Nelson Brands has 454 takedowns this year

That seems doubful unless he has Tech Fall'ed every kid he has wrestled this year by about a 25 - 10 score...?? :)

He has wrestled 50 matches and has won all but 4 by bonus. 454/50 = 9.08 takedowns per match. Entirely possible. Most of his falls are in the 2:00-4:00 range, while many of his techs (against better opponents) are in the 4:00-5:00 range. He likely had 15+ points against those guys by the time he pinned them.

Wow...I looked at all his matches on TrackWrestling and yes he has dominated in 46 of the 50 wins with only 1 Major and 3 regular decisions ...if he ran up a 12-14 point lead on all of the guys he pinned it is very possible...

I've seen that ballpark figure of takedowns before today for him. I'm guessing it's right.

His matches I've seen have involved a lot of catch and release.

My take from that is 152lb Iowa kids need to work on leg defense.o_O There is no way he gets 400+ tds on our side of the river.

Didn't he score like 17 points in the first period of the semifinal or finals match at state last year? I know it was some outrageous amount of points he threw up on the board in a short amount of time

I probably didn't have that many takedowns in my entire wrestling career. High school, junior high, little kids, everything. Good lord.

Pretty sure those numbers are correct. A week or two ago, he set the IC West all-time takedown record, passing up several stars. . . . and he has another full season to compete. I also saw that he's leading the state in takedowns (obviously) and that 2nd place has about 1/2 as many as he does.

The kid is on a tear, to say the least. More power to him. I think it's safe to say he's mastered the mental aspect of the sport and that he's taken the "Iowa style" to heart.

I heard he has access to a ton of never before seen footage of 2 takedown wizards. Idk where he gets it from

He would do something similar in Illinois and imagine if he was in a room like OPRF or Lockport.

He's head and shoulders above everyone at 152 in Illinois minus O'Connor
I highly doubt that. If he were on OPRF or Lockport he would be wrestling people that he is not going to tech that easy. He would be at the Ironman and other tourneys. I am not saying he isn't tough, but guys like Joe Williams and Joey Gilbert and TJ Williams did not put up those kinds of numbers and the guy from Illinois does not have those types of numbers either. I doubt Nelson would.

Depends on the style of the individual. Nelson wrestles at a frenetic pace and doesn't really care if he gets scored on.

Joe and T.J. probably aren't the best examples to use. While they were both phenomenal, neither guy scored in proportion to his ability. I suspect they scored a good bit more in high school than at Iowa, given the step up in competition, but in college they were still almost always head and shoulders above their competition and didn't usually blow their doors off offensively. Nelson is just a Tasmanian Devil out there. He may not be the most naturally gifted wrestler, but he gets about 183% out of his his ability.

Bottom line is he seems to be a pretty talented kid who keeps getting better. He's got another year to develop and I imagine he'll put himself through another freestyle season this summer. If he commits to Iowa (stranger things have happened) he'll likely have to sit a year. His redshirt year Kemmerer will be in his Junior year, Marinelli in his Sophmore year. So unless he drops to 149 or bumps up to 174 and beats out Young, he's only gonna start 3 years at Iowa. He's certainly fun to watch.

He may be better than most of the Illinois kids but they would not surrender that many takedowns. Ask O'Connor.

I'm a fan of head Coach Josh Oster and a lot of his kids but Lockport ain't no OPRF. Montini is close.
Fun fact:
Every kid currently in OPRF's program has been part of a machine that has yet failed to produce them an Illinois 3A state team title since they've been enrolled there. Outside of a couple kid's that have transferred out no other high school kid in the world has ever won an Illinois 3A state team title. Almost UConn WBB like :D

I pulled a Pat Riley and own the rights to the

tee shirts I expect to hand out to our seniors the weekend after next.

Oster has also been there nowhere near as long as Powell (yes I know Collins is the HC but we both know Powell runs the show). The Twister/MFVE pipeline has proven to be very beneficial.

I say that he would because there wouldn't be so many falls and a lot more lopsided match scores for Nelson. He is also a different wrestler than O'Connor, he attacks at a much more frenetic pace.

That's awesome. It's my opinion that he has the mind and body to go 110% in the room and on the mat because he hasn't been pushed like a large chunk of kids out there.

I'm doing the same with my boys. Youth state titles are FUN, but I now wonder if more harm than good can come from them.

I think we will see Kem at 149 and Nelson at 157
