Personally I don't understand the big difference in NET ranking. Team AAA losses to Duke and Purdue? Apologies for the screwed up headers

I'm not an expert on this, but have an educated guess I'll throw out--The team in question has had close games in their losses and have blown out teams in their wins. They've sort of become this year's classic "computer tricker" team--maybe they actually are top-20 good, but I have my doubts.
Here's their analytic rankings: BPI #12, KP #18, Sagarin #22. They also have a Strength of Schedule ranked #26. That said, here are their results based rankings: Strength of Record #61, KPI #66.

The other reality is that the difference between #40 and #20 is pretty marginal--especially when talking about 360+ teams.

Just went to the Net site as well.

Rankings make no sense on just the numbers shown in the table. Must be a lot more to it.

Edit - yeah I guess so.

The NET includes more components than just winning percentage. It takes into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses.
