New Anthony Jeselnik special trailer

He's the best. I love to play him for my parents and watch my dad laugh and my mom cringe.
Supposedly with the Trans bits. He’s taking shots at Dave Chapelle and other low hanging fruit comedians. The podcasts I’ve seen him on promoting the special he hammers comedians that complain about being censored. Anthony going you are trying to be provocative.
You’re going for shock value. Then you have the nerve to complain about some being upset. You just had a special with 1 million views and made a shit ton of money. Says their grandstanding is all bull shit marketing.

I doubt he’s going after Chappelle. Dave punches down at times, but he’s genuinely funny and it always goes somewhere.

I really like Jeselnek comedy philosophy.

Basically your job is to be funny and make sure most have a good time. If you fail to do that. You suck. Anthony goes hard at every taboo subject. But still gets most to laugh.

I saw him in person a few years ago and he was terrific. I'd definitely go see him again.
Think he’d be awesome to hangout with. Talk sports, politics, movies, etc. Anything but comedy. Anthony talking to me about stand up. Would be a human trying to communicate with a bug.

Think I've posted this, but my wife & I went to this show in Green Bay, he filmed the special in Milwaukee a couple days before. The opening bit is indeed about trans people, & imo some of the best stuff he's ever done.
Also sounds like he's wrapping up his podcast as he's disgusted by the industry. He wants to be known as a stand up, & not a Podcaster who steals from his act for the pod or who chases clout interviewing people without giving them shit. IE Rogan & Theo Vonn types aren't comedians anymore. He mentioned someone canceling shows last minute bc they had Trump on their podcast but didn't say who

I'm a big fan of his podcast and will definitely be sad to see it go, but it's been pretty clear that that it could have ended at any time then there was a hiatus when he went on his European tour this summer. RIP JRVP

Think it’s nearly impossible to be an active podcaster and not have it hurt your stand up. But as he points out podcasts pay way too much money to turn down for most. But similar to any market boom it will bust. So best cash the checks now.

The “podcasting” industry has gotten so bad that I fully understand not wanting to be associated with it. Twitch streaming has gone the same way. You devalue your career by adding those kinds of hyphens.

My issue with Rogan now at least from featuring stand ups. Most of the ones he pushes hard are bootlickers. That either haven’t paid their dues or frankly aren’t good.

I saw this set live on his recent tour and it was great. The only thing I don’t like about Jeselnik’s style is that I can’t help myself from trying to predict where he is going to take these jokes, but that’s really more of a me problem.

I wasn’t even talking about Rogan. The Hawk Tuah girl had a top five podcast. Literally someone off the street was given a podcast. It’s really become the lowest common denominator.

Watched a bit of an episode. Reminded me of all those E TV shows from the 90’s. Following Tara Reid around the world while she goes clubbing or swimming in a bikini.

Yeah it appears what really pissed him off was a podcaster/comedian who cancelled a show at the last minute to interview the VP candidate.
Anthony hated that his audience had probably already made plans, sitter, set aside time etc to have that all up ended. Plus the venue was empty and went unused. Employees not getting paid etc etc. As a stand up he felt a big disrespect to the business.

Cancelling a show for that is such a bush league move. You are actively screwing your most dedicated fans.

If you can’t perform, it’s one thing. If you’re choosing not to honor a commitment, you’re the bad guy.

The venue as well. It’s all part of an economic system that keeps entertainers employed. If more guys did that all of a sudden some these places are going to quit booking comics or possibly go under.
There are fewer and fewer small clubs left. Partly because of the podcasting boom and economic viability. These places are where the new guys create their acts and come in contact on a human level with people everywhere. Just another potential shutting of people interactions.

Listening to Jeselnick on Dan Le Batard pod currently. He calls Chapelle out by name for his stupid "trans bits"

AJ, while having a sharp tongue in his comedy, does seem to be pretty laid back. He jokes about how many times he has killed off his parents and how family members want to be included until they are, and then have buyers remorse when it happens. e.g. his uncle becoming a molester, but I can't find that interview.

I enjoyed his tv show as well. But I think he does well enough that he has eff you money. So kill the podcast when it isn't fun anymore. We should all be that lucky.

I stand corrected. I’ll need to listen to it. I’m curious to hear how Jeselnik views it.

Dave certainly isn’t your average knuckle-dragging Rogan comedian. His commentary on the societal pretending involved with Trans stuff feels pretty culturally relevant.

Grinding for 20 years. 8 of the first by eating mostly instant noodles. It’s probably why he has difficulty maintaining weight. His body built up a decade of tolerance of essentially not eating. It’s cumulative similar to a person who has spent their entire life overeating.

Think Anthony meant it more of doing the bits without punching down. Jim Jefferies has a good trans bit. Where he says your generation is the most progressive ever. Similar to how the previous one was the most progressive ever at that point. But you’re also the most entitled and spoiled generation ever. Similar to how the previous generation was as well.

That's literally all he says. How the first 10 minutes of his new special is an answer to Chapelle. It is an interesting listen to hear his process/thoughts on comedy.

Dave is one of the few stand ups he feels operates at his level. Got the impression of more throwing the gauntlet at him than anything . Dave and Anthony with their persona both enjoy bragging about how good they are. Dave calls himself the goat. Anthony is saying well goat I’m better than you. What does that make me.
Honestly only remember one joke or story from Dave’s trans material. It was about a trans opener he invited to bomb for him. He asked her from the audience if the carpet matched the curtains. —-Dave, I don’t have carpet. It’s hardwood flooring. Everything else he did felt more akin to a lecture or sermon. Pass on that.

Yeah, that one was meh.

He developed his “Man on the Moon” Jim Carrey story from Dreamers into a longer piece of commentary on indulging method acting and how far we go indulging Trans stuff.

See I barely remember that bit. It really doesn’t apply. Pretty sure everyone realizes Jim Carey, Daniel-Day Lewis, etc are trying to make art. I’m glad Lewis was given freedom and catered to. Would have never gotten Daniel Plainview without it. Trans people it’s their actual identity.

Chappelle is one of the most honest comics alive. He doesn't give a shit about pleasing anybody.

How about being funny. Anthony’s point is you can still be honest/true to yourself and be funny. Dave’s trans bits just weren’t as good as his other material. I go to a stand up show to laugh. Not a lecture or sermon. Others can disagree though. That’s cool.

Can confirm the new hour is almost identical to the show we saw. I don't think there's a moment/word he hasn't meticulously pre-planned by the time he gets to recording an hour of material.

Dave has always had little lectures in his routine.. I mean for decades.

Yeah I know, but his last few came off as Cosby type lectures and ate up too much time to be considered little. Not implying Dave is any type of deranged rapist ala the Coz. Dave’s reputation is of a real cool dude on and off stage. My issue similar to Cosby is both are punching down.
If you’re going to have a conversation. Talk with someone not down at them. Everyone is trying to live their life.

I loved in this comedy special the story at the end about Norm McDonald. I won't spoil it for you. Lets just say Norm is a genius from the grave.

Chappelle’s trans bit was actually really good…. The first time he did it. Then he continued to bring it up in several specials in a row and it wasn’t funny anymore. His last couple specials seemed a bit lazy and it felt like he was losing it.
