New Football Recruit Enrolling Thursday

Tough, multi-sport athlete who will likely have a chip on his shoulder ... those are the kind of guys who usually helps make your team better. Given the loss of VandeBerg and the fact that Easley will graduate after '18 ... we're clearly looking to find some guys to compete for the slot spot.

Also, the kid was a really good lacrosse player ... that has pretty good implications as it relates to hand-eye coordination.

I'm usually the guy excited about pick ups like this. Maybe it's because of the game I just watched, but I'm just not anymore. Hope it pans out, I'm not going to think about it another second.

Just the type of guys who have made Iowa football medicore for the last 20 years!

Welcome aboard Nico. Come in and work your butt off.

(It is unavoidably concerning the only commits we have gotten since the initial signing day have a combined 0 stars)

Great?! Iowa spies a kid, invite him to camp during the summer and then keeps its mouth shut while maintaining contact and evaluating one's talent and pulls trigger just before semester enrollment. This is what it means to be MEDIOCRE??

Here's your sign (sb33Mlz)

I'd say its more the losing 5 or more games most years but who's splitting hairs.....

But going 9-4.....10-3.....11-2 is the norm across college football????? For clueless, fact-less, and non-realistic Iowa fans it is. When expectations meet reality you will enjoy the game a lot more. Want, wish, expect to win every game....not reality when you talk about the whole college football product.

Nah ... guys like Herb Grigsby, Tyler Fanucchi, Derrick Willies, and Trey Stross ... those are the types who contributed more to mediocrity.

In contrast, guys like VandeBerg, McNutt, Hinkel, and Solomon are the guys who helped Iowa "rise above."

When I see guys like Smith-Marsette, Cooper, Tracy, and Ragaini ... they remind me more of the latter group of guys than the former.

Given how the staff had put out offers early in the season ... it's pretty clear that the they were initially anticipating a smaller recruiting class. Given how O-linemen usually stick around .... I would guess that the departure of Daniels was unanticipated (as was how Jackson's draft stock blew up). Higher rated guys usually don't keep you in contention unless you were on their radar adequately early (or they have to make an abrupt change of plans ... due to a coaching change or something like that).

Given what the 'ship count is up to ... and considering that the coaches still might be fishing for a graduate transfer punter (or a sure-thing punter) ... what we're seeing is what Iowa always tends to do late in the recruiting game. Given how often late commits tend to be "hits" rather than "misses" ... I would consider that far from concerning.

Because successful football teams are just usually loaded with white receivers just like successful basketball teams are usually loaded with white guards. Are both programs offering free Starbucks to get recruits?!???

River city jazz man has already confirmed there will not be another scholly given to a kicker as they cannot justify 2 being spent here so the kicker would have to be a walk on. There are about 3 Eric Grahams for every Josey. And we can go all the way back to 99 if you want, unfourtunatly today I have time to do it if you want. We love the Bob Sanders Josey Jewell stories but there are a ton more andre Harris's than you would imagine if you go back through.

A while back someone on this board mentioned that any team that didn't win at least 9 games a year 4 out of 5 years should fire their coach. It piqued my interest so I went back and looked at the data for the five year period ending with the 2016 season. There were 9 teams in the power 5 that accomplished this, and a total of 11 overall. It's nowhere as easy as people seem to think.
Here is the list.
Clemson 5 times
Florida St 5 times
Oklahoma 4 times
Ohio St 5 times
Nebraska 4 times
Toledo 4 times
Boise St 4 times
Stanford 4 times
Alabama 5 times
LA Tech 4 times
Wisconsin 4 times

So this kid played 4 years of varsity ball, then a year at prep school? How often do you get a kid with that much experience?

What's the deal with the prep school route? Grades or did he just want another shot at earning a scholarship without going the JUCO route?

That’s one out of all the other NFL teams and all college teams....so, 1 out of about 150. Don’t like them odds.

Lot of teams have white slot WR like Clemson did last year who caught game winning TD pass in title game. Most teams have one in the group for college ball. Last I checked both Smith Marsette and Smith are not white nor is Tracey coming in next year or Young or Falconer on the roster. To just dismiss a recruit cause his skin color is pure ignorance.

Drake Stoops is going to play at Oklahoma from what I've heard. He'll be a walk-on, but can get free tuition. This is his replacement, in my opinion.

Boston College offered Ragaini a grayshirt.
Yeah because his dad made millions there the 1 thing the kid needs is "free tuition"...

My comment wasn't about lowly "starred" guys ... rather it simply is that when it comes to late offers ... the Iowa coaches have typically seen a lot of tape on the guys they offer. Or, at the very least, they've benefitted from also getting to see a guys SR tape ... which is an undervalued metric of a player's potential.

Consequently, when the Hawks throw out late offers to guys ... if you really track down a lot of those late offers ... they tend more often than not to be "hits" rather than misses. For example, even if you look at Clayberg ... the guy may be viewed as a "miss" because we lost him due to attrition ... however, on the flip side ... we still managed to land him as a gray-shirt AND he was an important special-teams contributor while he was still on the roster.

Also, in further response to your claim ... I'll see your "Eric Graham" and raise you an "Akrum Wadley" and a "Jordan Canzeri."

If you look at your example of Andre Harris ... he's an example of Greg Davis and Kennedy trying to "prospect" on speed guys ... hoping that they'd get them to work at WR for the Hawks. Thus, I'd hardly say that Harris was more representative of how Iowa tends to recruit at positions. Besides ... he wasn't even a late offer. As I mentioned before ... my comment had a lot more to do with late offers rather than just lowly rated guys.

Finishing in the top 10 five times, 63 players drafted in the NFL yep, pretty freaking mediocre.

You truly want to see mediocre? Go be a Nebraska fan. You want to see futility? Go be an ISU fan.
ONE top 25 finish the last 8 years, but only NE is living in the past ;).
ONE bowl win the last 7 years.
That is not mediocre? Cmon man!

is it too much to expect Iowa to finish in the top 25 more than once in 8 years?

Quite a conversation going on in this thread. Getting back to the subject that began all this, thank you Nico for picking the Iowa Hawkeyes. You are just the type of guy who prospers in our system. I love when the staff uncovers hidden gems like yourself. Work hard in the classroom and on the field and your experience at Iowa will impact you the rest of your life.
