**NEW** Iowa Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread

Help me out. By "big prize" I think you mean a national championship. By "recruiting the portal to compete for the big prize" I think you mean Iowa needs starters from the portal. But maybe you mean we need a few good non-starters from the portal to compete for the National Championship??

How many women in the portal this summer will be worthy of starting on National Championship team? How many schools will pursue those couple of players? It's just not that easy.
Not sure what is so difficult to understand, but IMO they need to try and find a more athletic player or two if possible. They do not have the players on the current roster to probably even reach the elite 8. Clark cannot carry this team all the time. BTW nobody said it would be easy that is your take.

I'm done now so you go figure out whatever it is you do not understand.

Personally Kate and Gabby know the system well but I don't think they're athletic and quick enough to be impact players. I agree they need more athleticism where else they've reached their ceiling.

I think Lisa is trying to maintain our program at a high level ,the best she can. This year’s incoming class has no for sure immediate help. The following class looks stronger and will have more developed players on the team. Stuelke, Sydney, McCabe, and hopefully others. I think we need to chill on all the NC or it’s a bust. The only sport we have that has the talent to compete wrestling. Enjoy a program that plays at a high level.
excellent post…… personally I’ll watch every Iowa game I can…… have 6 season tickets for wrestling……I support all Iowa programs and I’m overall pretty damn proud of the way our athletes represent our state…..

there is a lot more to athletics than winning national titles and most of us would be better served to look for positives wherever possible instead of focusing so much on negativity

Iowa wrestling is different…… anything less than a title is disappointing

Maybe Lisa is expanding her recruiting reach a little with a player coming from the west coast and looking at at least another out there. She has always needed more athleticism on her teams. That being said, I doubt she is going to change even a little bit on the character of players she will offer.

Mid level team next season with projected 2023-2024 roster. . What a shame to waste a generational talent.
Wow I have enjoyed your posts, but CC has been a joy and a blessing to Iowa fans. losses are disappointing. But with CC and Spencer we have 2 of the best ever Hawkeyes. And yes neither team is our best ever.

I think I understand. Your contribution is that to be a better team we need better players. Why hasn't Bluder thought of that! To score more points we also need to make more baskets.

I'm just going to root for this year's Top 10 team, and whatever players we have on the court next year. And not continuously complain about what the team doesn't have.

Iowa will still finish in the Top 3 of the BIG next season with little to no dropoff. Iowa could possibly be even better next year. Monica and McKenna are good players but Kate can easily slide over to the 4 and the center position has proven to be plug and play under Bluder. Hannah Stuelke should make huge strides and I'd be shocked if she isn't starting at the 5.

There was no guarantee Iowa was going to land a superstar in the portal and even if they did, you never know how that player would fit in.

With Martin/Marshall back you know what you have. Iowa will return a solid core of players along with experienced backups. Our lineup will be the most flexible I've ever seen it with several players who come in and play multiple positions. The overseas trip in the summer will also be really beneficial in avoiding a slow start. There's never a guarantee for success in the NCAA tournament but Iowa should be a host school year and be in a good position to make a run.

Hawk Talk update: Bluder was asked about Nebraska being a team they compete with when it comes to recruits. She said they haven’t had too many that have been in direct battles but feels they are about to enter one right now. “I think there is one that we are both going after very hard” I would assume this is about Britt Prince.
Random thought: does anyone know if Prince and McCabe have any connection?

What don't you understand? It highlights of Maddy Greenway playing against Hopkins.
I was at the game trying to read this. The video didn’t show, I tried to delete my post but internet in the 7 th row was terrible

I agree Hannah at the 4. The only other possible 4 I can see with this roster would possibly be Jada.
I agree. Only other option would be to go small and move Kate to the 4. I have heard people mention that here as a possibility. Would be a really small lineup, however.

A.J. Ediger is a 4, too. She is not quite big enough to be a regular 5 in Iowa's system.
In her limited minutes this year, she did seem to have a nice jump shot. Quick too.

She and O’Grady have indeed seemed better outside the low post than Stuelke.

I was thinking AJ was 6'3" instead of 6'2", so probably a better 4 but I believe she has subbed in to the 5 a couple of times this year. She's not as tall as O'Grady, but a little bigger.
It's fun to speculate but that's all I'm doing. There will be some changes probably before next October.

She's listed at 6"O". Warnock listed as 6'1". There's not really much of a difference. I could see Kate starting at the 4 as she provides a similar skill set to Warnock but is a little better at driving to the rim. The question then is who starts at the 3 and there are multiple options. Syd would likely be the favorite. She is listed as 5"11 so we would be a little smaller. Of course Kylie could also start at the 3 if healthy or Shateah (recruited as a 3) or Jada who Bluder mentioned was also recruited as a 3/4.

I think the 3/4 battle will be highly competitive but we have a ton more options if Kate slides over to the 4 than we do if she stays at the 3. If Kate stays at the 3, I think Shateah would be the best option at the 4 assuming that Hannah is the starting 5.

Pretty sure she has subbed in at the 5 all year.

After the Whalen news, I of course thought of the portal. Obviously there are some young talented kids who have some decisions to make, with the biggest potential prize being Mara Braun. I decided to look at her offers/finalists.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Iowa on her top 6 or so, which was nice (I assumed we had offered, but I didn’t rly keep up with recruiting before last season). I also saw one of her finalists was Maryland lol. I know she’s not even in the portal but in any case I’ll be pretty bummed if she ends up there tbh.

I think they are more likely to stay now that she's gone.
The Gophers freshman have been quoted in the last week as staying going forward at Minnesota. That was when they assumed Whalen was coming back.

Edit:
“We chose to go here for a reason. We knew it wouldn't be pretty right away. It's been super frustrating. People are so quick to say, 'Oh, are you guys leaving?' We're like, 'No.'”

I see people on their message board talking about how they all signed a lease together. As though kids don’t break leases all the time lol. I’m not saying they’ll all transfer but depending on the coach, it’s not at all unlikely that one would.

Yeah, the picture Minnesota is trying to paint is this was a mutual decision.

Really doubt it was.

As far as potential portal...All these returnees for the Hawks seems like a problem for building the team for 2-3 years down the road.
JMO.
It depends on the team's philosophy down the road. Indiana and Maryland have shown you can rebuild a good chunk of your rotation on the fly through the transfer portal and still be really good. Iowa should be a decently attractive transfer destination at that point.

If the coaches choose to rebuild from within instead I agree that it could cause issues.

The only way Iowa can rebuild, if that's what Lisa chooses to do, is run players off. That would be a sad day for Iowa WBB IMHO.
I don't necessarily think that's true. At this very moment the 2024-2025 roster has 14 players committed to it. That moves to 15 with an additional 2024 recruit and/or Clark coming back for an extra year.

But it also doesn't factor in players transferring out and/or Ava Jones potentially taking a medical retirement. In the transfer portal era it's fairly likely Iowa will see one or two transfers out over the course of two off-seasons. There are plenty of players on this year's roster who have no great path to playing time next year.

I hope there are no outgoing players to factor in. If there are not, then rebuilding is a pipe dream for many of you.
