Many of us come to this forum to escape from the divisive nonsense but now, like everywhere else, it is unescapable so as with many non political forums, I am done. Goodbye! Its generally been a good fifteen year run but the end is here.
LiesThis article I read interviewed an unnamed HC at a successful Wbb program in a red state (it may have been Bluder tbh, or maybe Moren even) and the HC was quoted as saying she had been asked point blank by a parent what she would do if their kid got pregnant. She replied that she’d basically put her life on the line to get the kid an abortion. Great sentiment but not something you wanna worry about as a parent I’m sure.
People leaving CA bc they can’t afford housing has nothing to do with families wanting their kids to go somewhere they can be themselves and not worry about going to jail or being harassed for doing what kids do (whether it’s trying weed, getting pregnant, wanting to participate in a pride festival) or just being black and doing anything.
If you still think no one cares, you can follow athletes’ socials to see what they think. MANY influential female student athletes (college, high school and alums) firmly believe the NCAA shouldn’t have had the Final Four in Texas bc of their abortion laws. Just one example.
To be clear, this is calculus we’re talking about, not simple math. This factor doesn’t apply to all kids. But think of it again as a checklist. The top kids want to check 10 boxes, and they’ll find a school that checks all 10 boxes, or the 9 that are most important. I’m saying that Iowa likely checks 9 or 10 boxes for very few kids.
Hopefully a black/mixed recruit might notice how popular Hannah is among us.
I look forward to having 3 girls who obviously have melanin on our roster next year.
But you MUST understand this is NOT how most young GIRLS feel — especially if they’re black or queer (which I’d say accounts for at least half of elite recruits).
Maybe the athletes are thinking Iowa would be a great place cuz unlike three southern states, we didn't fight right keep black people slaves.
So LA, AL,GA and FL are liberal hotbeds? Please. I WILL deny that this is a factor for a 'LOT' of recruits and more representative of your political leanings than reality. Repressive and regressive? You're trying waaaay too hard. How about safe and secure compared to most places with a friendly, supportive culture? Do you think anybody thinks about that these days? You better believe they
He is a shit starter. Saying things that aren't true.Agree it needs locked, but it was you who started this whole thing. You and some of the stupidest statements I have ever read on here.
I think you need to stay in your East coast or communist CA and get off this board. We get it, you hate Iowa. Go away!

Just because we have different opinions doesn’t mean we hate Iowa. That’s Minnesota Gophers fans. No offense man, but you're the one who injected both into this thread.Oh god it’s getting worse lmao. Again, I don’t care how you feel. I don’t live in Iowa and I’m not going to argue politics or policy.
Just because you say these attitudes effect recruiting doesn't make it true. I hold the same political opinions you do and I don't buy it. The last two decades have seen throngs of black recruits flock to Storrs, CT and Waco, TX for godssake. They don't care what these state legislatures are doing. Why would they? They are four years and out.But these subjects affect recruiting in a negative way. Most young people have views of tolerance and acceptance, the opposite of fascism. I don’t live in IOWA anymore but you couldn’t pay me to go back. For the safety of my wife and children, Iowa is being listed among many states who have put the car in reverse. Any trips through these states, we do it swiftly. States that were once a destination for us. Is now completely off the table. We are in our mid 30s. We don’t want to take our chances. If I was a parent of a potential d1 athlete woman, I would recommend avoiding Iowa and other states who are in a race to a fascist state. It hurts me saying it and thinking it, because it was great growing up in Iowa where things made sense. But the last 10 years have taken a deep dive into darkness.
Sorry but you are a effing nutcase and take this shit to off topic. Annoying as hell. You want to feel racist? By all means go ahead. You want to be embarrassed by the State and University and the WBB team? Go ahead....I won't stand with you. Typical of a person like you....all bitching with no apparent suggestion of a solution. Jesus your act and those like you get really effing old and why I tune out what you are saying. I am only responding to say "TAKE THIS CRAP TO THE OFF TOPIC FORUM".OMG you are so annoying lol I'm not talking about adults living in red states or blue states. Taxes??? These kids aren't thinking about that. I'm sorry Joe Biden is your president lmaooo but this thread is about basketball and recruiting kids.
Most kids who grew up on the coast (or in the south) -- i.e., densely populated, more diverse, talent-rich places -- probably think Iowa is a really boring, empty state. Most of them don't want to live in the middle of nowhere. That's not saying they can't be convinced. But it's gonna be much harder if it means they have to worry about getting a ticket for smoking a joint on a summer night, getting harassed for going to the only gay bar in town, or having to drive an hour away to get an abortion in the next state. If you dont think young girls (many of whom are queer, black, or both) and their parents are thinking about this on some level, you're clueless.
No but the cities that LSU, UGA, and most Florida schools (not to mention their student bodies) are located are in are much more diverse and/or closer to major metropolitan areas. Black and brown kids can walk down the street and not feel like they stick out like a sore thumb. Their teams are also a lot more likely to look like them -- no one wants to be the token black kid on the bench when everyone else on your team is white.
This is not a hot take. Iowa and Iowa City have neither any major cities nor diversity and it's only in the news for things that are, well, not really appealing or welcoming (book bans, drag show protests, abortion restrictions). Even our appearance in the NC was really actually not overwhelmingly positive. A lot of people came away from the whole Angel Reese / CC thing thinking that our fanbase / state is full of MAGA racists...these things stick.
And they're also not new developments -- this stuff has been said about Iowa for a few seasons now, going back to our Elite 8 run in 2019.
Can't say I blame you....effing annoying as hell. Many of us come to this forum to escape from the divisive nonsense but now, like everywhere else, it is unescapable so as with many non political forums, I am done. Goodbye! Its generally been a good fifteen year run but the end is here.
100% agree.God grief. We just had the Hawks play in the National Championship game and we have one of the greatest stars in the game, who just had an EPIC year, and we have people wanting to bring political crap into the recruiting conversation. Look, I do not care what color our players are. I just want them to love the Hawks and want to win a championship. This "shit on the state of Iowa" crap needs to just stop. There are some idiots in this thread.
He's not a smart personNo offense man, but you're the one who injected both into this thread.

Congratulations you found idiots and racists just like you!If you don’t think any of this is a problem, please spend some time on WBB twitter. I’m not making this up. This is what people say about Iowa.
It took all of 5 seconds to find these. They’re not the first and won’t be the last tweets like this. These things were said before we played LSU and South Carolina.
The truth is we never would have landed Clark if she wasn’t an Iowa kid. And we almost didn’t, she committed to Notre Dame first. We have work to do if we ever wanna land a recruit of her caliber again. Bury your head in the sand, fine, but don’t be surprised if we can’t get Morrow or Betts.
It taking 5 seconds for you to find those says a lot more about the content you consume than it does about Iowa.If you don’t think any of this is a problem, please spend some time on WBB twitter. I’m not making this up. This is what people say about Iowa.

Oh right, by searching “Aneesah Morrow Iowa” on twitter, I’m clearly consuming radical leftist propaganda lol c’mon now girl.It taking 5 seconds for you to find those says a lot more about the content you consume than it does about Iowa.
You found two butt hurt South Carolina fans, clearly ignorant of Iowa as illustrated in the comments in the thread, where they received pushback for their comments.Oh right, by searching “Aneesah Morrow Iowa” on twitter, I’m clearly consuming radical leftist propaganda lol c’mon now girl.
I was about to say, doesn’t it seem like there is black women openly racist against whites women in wbb?Congratulations you found idiots and racists just like you!
It would be better both for you and all of us if you were not a fan of the Iowa womens bball team. Take you racist, bigoted views out of here and become a fan of some other school. You exemplify what is wrong with the WOKE culture!Oh right, by searching “Aneesah Morrow Iowa” on twitter, I’m clearly consuming radical leftist propaganda lol c’mon now girl.
I found two SC fans who are representative of a pretty significant chunk of WBB fans. You found two butt hurt South Carolina fans, clearly ignorant of Iowa as illustrated in the comments in the thread, where they received pushback for their comments.
And there is very little we can do about the perception of Iowa and any debate about what little we could do is absolutely political in nature and doesn't belong on this board.
And I didn't call it radical leftist propaganda, that's just your strawman. Is that how you conduct all of your arguments, putting words in other people's mouths?
Lol I am merely a product of the culture, attitudes, history, community and excellence that are the University of Iowa and Iowa City baby Go Hawks!!It would be better both for you and all of us if you were not a fan of the Iowa womens bball team. Take you racist, bigoted views out of here and become a fan of some other school. You exemplify what is wrong with the WOKE culture!
All these show is that you found some tweets from some racists. And yes, blacks can be racists! If you don’t think any of this is a problem, please spend some time on WBB twitter. I’m not making this up. This is what people say about Iowa.

Well now you're just changing the argument. If your new argument is that players of color don't want to attend because we have a virtually all white roster, I can buy that. No one wants to feel like an outsider.Look another article. This one on the record. Really not lies.
“Less than a year after the Supreme Court’s decision, several coaches told the AP that a state’s stance on abortion has come up on the recruiting trail. One coach said a recruit’s parent explicitly said their child wanted to go to school in a state where abortion rights are protected.
When the daughters of Umme Salim-Beasley, the Rutgers women’s gymnastics coach, were making their list of potential college destinations, they crossed off states where abortions were sharply restricted.
Salim-Beasley called her daughters’ thought process “eye-opening” but also emblematic of their generation, one she believes is more politically aware.
“When I was in high school, (politics) was the furthest thing from my mind,” Salim-Beasley said. “That’s not something I had to concern myself with. But I think that kids nowadays, high school kids and college kids, are very aware and informed of what’s going on.”
It’s not my fault that Iowa fans don’t understand how the rest of the world views this state and our team. I’m not telling anyone who to vote for or what policies to support. I’m just someone who is very tuned into WBB across the country and it’s the state of play. I’m sorry if that rankles some red state feathers. It is what it is. I also say this as a response to everyone who’s just screaming “WHY WOULDNT EVERYONE WANT TO COME PLAY AT IOWA” lmao duh
Storrs is in the middle of NYC and Boston lol and also close to the ocean and mountains. New England is brimming with culture and diversity and events that Iowa does not have. Waco is in the middle of Austin and Dallas, two very diverse, young, booming cities (and yes much better weather lol). Again, all Iowa City has to compare is a 4 hour drive to Chicago. Chicago is actually my favorite city in the US but that’s not gonna cut it for some kids.
More importantly, both these towns offer something (offered, for Waco) that Iowa doesn’t — blue blood status and the cash, connections, coverage, and cachet that come with it. Multiple NCs and a shot at one more every year. Kids will make that trade. But Iowa isn’t close to that status.
Furthermore, Baylor did more than just overcome their hurdles, they demolished them. Despite the blandness of Waco (but better weather), they always had plenty of women of color and they were a powerful representation of black excellence to many WBB athletes and fans. Again, we in contrast represent white mediocrity. No, I didnt coin that phrase. That is a phrase people use to describe the Iowa women’s basketball team.
The only things I hate about Iowa are our reputation in the WBB world and our inability to recruit better. I hope both things are changing tho
I’ve said more than once that both of these issues are related and reinforcing each other. Add to that the fact that Iowa is not an exciting destination, it’s a lot to overcome. Especially when these girls can go anywhere they want — literally anywhere and the slightest thing can kick you off their list of contenders.Well now you're just changing the argument. If your new argument is that players of color don't want to attend because we have a virtually all white roster, I can buy that. No one wants to feel like an outsider.
But that's a far cry from your original argument, which is that that they don't want to come because Iowa has acquired a reputation as being on the far right of the culture war. I don't buy that.
There were also snaps of Lauren Betts arguing with Iowa fans over the whole Angel Reese thing I've heard. We unfortunately do, and have had, an image problem which would make some look elsewhere. The football thing hurt us a lot, as a university, even though it was basically speculative with little to no substantiation. We live in a world where perception matters more than the details within. Iowa is no different than other states but if your perception is only based off of the internet as many kid's nowadays are, this kind of stuff hurts. If you don’t think any of this is a problem, please spend some time on WBB twitter. Exactly. Do I think all Iowa fans are racist? No. Did I ever really interact with any while in school? No. I absolutely love being an alum of the University of Iowa and I love Iowa City just as much. I have so much pride in both, and our achievements this season made me exceedingly proud. I spent 6 years at Iowa as a student and staff in CLAS. I loved it and I love going back. I'm sure there are just as many racists in Louisiana as there are Iowa tbh, which is particularly frustrating lol. But our image is what our image is and the WBB universe is fairly small. People talk, word travels. There were also snaps of Lauren Betts arguing with Iowa fans over the whole Angel Reese thing I've heard. I did not see anything on that. If so, that's clearly not great. It's clear we have a problem attracting black athletes in our major sports. What's also clear is we have had some pretty good success in all 3 of those sports, clearly womens basketball just making the national championship game. Now you could argue it took us getting a once in a lifetime player in Caitlin Clark, and you'd probably be right. 3 of the 4 incoming recruits on the mens basketball team are white. I believe all of the womens recruits are white. I do think there's probably something to black athletes wanting to play w/other black athletes. I don't think Iowa City is any more remote than Manhattan, KS, Storrs, CT, Lawrence, KS, etc. Athletes are in school to play sports and go to school and that takes up the majority of their time. I guess it is what it is at this point and not sure how or if that changes. Not sure anyone is really to blame (or deserves any type of blame) about the current situation. Like I said, we're pretty damn solid in all sports. There were also snaps of Lauren Betts arguing with Iowa fans over the whole Angel Reese thing I've heard. We have two recruits for 2023 and one is black lol. Lawrence and Storrs offer blue blood status and a run at a natty every season year. Manhattan KS tho idk lmao.I did not see anything on that. Yes she did. Czinano said so on a podcast lol and told the whole story. Some on here thought that was already the case anyway bc a picture of her in ND gear had floated around back in the day.Pretty sure Clark did not commit to ND first..
