**NEW** Iowa Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread

The above players are all real people and in that sense “legit”. What level of player each will be in 2027 and the extent of their interest in the Hawkeyes is in each 14 year old young lady’s hands. The balls will bounce many times before we have answers to your question. Hopefully they will play with Deal, Hayes and Greenway!

The hire of Henderson looks a bit like an heir apparent sort of idea. Do you think Jan is already planning her retirement? Or is Randi seeing this as an opportunity get to D1, as a chance to become a D1 head coach somewhere else?

Insightful post. Definitely an opportunity to prove her meddle, but that's all it is...an opportunity.

Jan just got the job, I highly doubt she is planning her retirement lol. Plus, there are other coaches that have been with the team much longer.

I think Randi is probably over the moon about this opportunity. To go from a D3 coach to now coaching at your Alma mater who came off back to back national championship appearances… couldn’t get much better than that. Also, if she does want to be a head coach again down the line, she will be able to be considered for way bigger jobs now.

Respectfully disagree. Randi took over a juggernaut DIII program at Wash U (her predecessor won 5 national championships, had 4 national runner-up finishes, had numerous other Sweet 16s or better, with 20+ conference championships). That predecessor was also a complete failure when she made the jump to D1 at Illinois. In Randi’s 6 years at Wash U, she won 1 conference championship, and had 1 good NCAA run (3 wins). IMO, that is hardly the background of a coach ready to get a D1 or BIG head job.

Randi arguably was more successful coaching at Coe College compared to Wash U. Either way, she is a very good coach and a great hire for the Hawks. Wonder what Duez is doing currently?

Randi must have played post at Iowa. Saw a picture of he standing next to Duez, he is 6'6". She looked to be 6'2".

In Duez's resignation notice, it said he was going back into medical supply sales.

Sounds like Randi is a solid hire.

She was a heck of a player on Bluder's first team playing next to a freshman Jennie Lillis in the post. Consuegra and Meder were a pretty dang good guard combo too. Bluder did not inherit a bare cupboard when Angie Lee resigned which is why they finished 2nd in the conference, winning the tournament title that season. AP #16 at the end of the year.

She was a very good player, but sadly I always remember her multiple missed shots at the (layups) rim. She's been pretty successful as a coach so I'm glad she was hired.

Run 4 The Roses is in Louisville starting tomorrow (or maybe started today?). Most of the EYBL teams are there. A bit surprised no one is at that one. The Adidas circuit is in Rock Hill, SC. Would guess that's where they are headed to start.

I think Skinner's Utah team is playing there. Not sure who some of their other targets might be.

EJ is in Louisville so it looks like Jan & Abby are as well...are you sure they were in Charlotte yesterday😂
Yesterday Raina posted a pic to her story of 4 hands in a huddle and tagged the other 3 coaches, with the location marked as Charlotte airport. Jan also posted to her story about how they were all flying together (as in sitting together). Maybe it was a connection.

Raina actually said in another story that she is gonna be the road for a month. Not sure if that’s hyperbole or not.

Oh and another note — I listed to a recent podcast Jan did and she said Randi only just got to Iowa City. I think Monday may have been her first day.

One other thing from this podcast…there was an interesting exchange about Jan’s post play / style. It was of course interspersed with the 6 on 6 legacy and her style of play as a forward. She mentioned that some prospective post players just aren’t interested in her traditional / old school method.

I’ve long suspected that might be the case — despite the “post-whisperer” moniker (and undeniable results), Bluder and Jan have also developed a bit of a reputation as being ill-suited to develop posts for the W. I think some of that (most?) is a bit loaded and just rivals being haters — especially Maryland fans — but I’ve wondered if the style has its pros and cons when it comes to recruiting.

It wasn’t a huge admission or dramatic moment or anything, it was kind of a throwaway comment. But she mentioned how some kids are just more interested in shooting 3s than battling on the block (and she discussed how Megan had to add that to her game as well when she got to the W).

Just one of those things to think about…we so often ask “Why wouldn’t a post want to play for Jan?” but it’s apparently not that clear cut.

Blaming development for Iowa not having more posts in the W is wrong in my opinion. I don't think any coach in the country could've made Monika Czinano into a W regular. She's just not tall or fast enough. The issue is Iowa hasn't been able to recruit players tall or athletic enough that they could develop into W players.

Starting at the 5, players like Boston, Griner, and Cardoso don't really shoot the three much. They mostly score around the basket, hit short jumpers, and cleanup on the glass. But each of them is 6'5' plus and more athletic than Iowa's recent 5s have been.

Most of Iowa's 5s have only been tall enough to play the 4 in the W. But 4s in the W are even more athletic. Gustafson and Czinano aren't in the same stratosphere athletically compared to Angel Reese, Breanna Stewart, or NaLyssa Smith.

The truth is only 10-15 players in a given class will spent significant time in the W. Most of those will come from the top 20 or 30 players in a class. That Gustafson made the W as the 80th ranked player in her class without great athleticism is a testament to her development at Iowa and her perseverance to evolve her game.

Stuelke is the only Iowa post in the past 10 years that is athletic enough to compete with other 4s in the W. Let's see how her development plays out the next couple years.

Your comments about that reputation is one reason I'm really intrigued to see how/if HS evolves her game the next two years. I know she was out of position this year but it seems to me she has to improve 2 out of 3 in the shooting, handles, or passing ability to have a legit shot at the next level. Not quite tall/long enough to play there based on the already demonstrated defensive/athletic potential. If someone more versed in WNBA thinks differently please share your thoughts. If HS does that it would speak volumes in recruiting.

Yeah, at 6’2” Hannah would be a bit undersized for a PF and definitely not quick enough to play SF. She’s going to have a hard road ahead of her, but it is possible.

I don't agree. One of the most athletic young ladies in a long time. Runs like a gazelle, can jump and good rebounder.

Wanted to add that Kate playing in the WNBA as a three star shows tou can make it with hard work. You can't measure heart.
