New ISU Staff

Well, all the posters on here clamoring for the Cyclones to return to their former glory and a renewed rivalry are about to get their wish it seems. I, for one, hate to see them step up their game. With the emergence of PSU,OSU,OkiSt and others, it feels like a strong ISU ultimately hurts the Hawks more than anyone.
Got to give it up to Pollard though. Guy goes out and hires a couple former Hawks, one who was recently on the current staff and not retained, who might have a bit of a grudge against our current regime. Little extra motivation to stick it to Brands. One thing is for sure. The gaunlet has been thrown down and the Hawks are gonna have to up their game

Dresser and Brands recently had some public tension. Reported fallings out between Brands and both Zadick/St J.

Story lines in the state just got really interesting.

All credit and blame falls at the man at the helm and I'm sure TNT would be the first to tell you that. Iowa State hires a bunch of former Hawks and it doesn't change the fact that they haven't been good in over a decade. I think TNT are making ground in the recruiting game and coming off a 4th place finish. Doesn't mean they are doing everything they can from a financial point of view to get back on top. "You don't like the result...figure it out."

I'm not happy that Iowa State's staff is now all Hawkeye's, but there are a BUNCH of former Iowa Wrestlers coaching, and they can't all Coach at Iowa. Sucks but that's life.

I do think the Brands Brothers have some explaining to do in regards to Metcalf, in my personal opinion. To me that's a bit of falling asleep at the wheel.

I have a VERY hard time believing any talk about a "falling out" between these ex-Hawks and TnT or Iowa University (aside from Zadick who may be peeved he was let go - which is understandable). I think any of them would jump at the chance to Coach at Iowa given the opportunity and a similar position.

And frankly, any thought of ISU's staff "stealing" recruits in-state from Iowa are laughable IMO. That isn't happening no matter who they get on staff on a regular basis, and the numbers are so low anymore would it really matter all that much?

At the end of the day, they're still Iowa State and located in Ames, and we're still Iowa and located in The Big Ten and Iowa City. No contest.

Wow. Doom and gloom from our fans. Go figure whatelse is new. I wish I was not a middle class citizen that has a daughter that plays traveling softball to chase her dream of playing D1 softball some day and a son who has dreams of playing football at Iowa or Oregon with and/or wrestle at Iowa. This all takes money so I cant donate. With that being sad I even if I had a ton of money I dont know I could hand a BIG check to Eustice. Cant stand him everytime I see him in the room or out in public he acts like a pompus ass or eggo maniac. But then I would realize its for the kids and not him. If I could I would donate 1 million a year. Getting Christmas cards from Terry's family every year makes me feel appreciated as just a fan though.

Eustice a pompous ass? Wow SMH

Who said that I think our coaches aren't working their tails off? I doubt anyone out works those guys, but I also question if we might be getting outsmarted. Here's the deal, even the best CEO's seek the help of consultants. Iowa Wrestling should be no different. Is there a guy on staff with a Marketing or Sales background? Wrestling, in general, is terrible on the business side of things. We hire former wrestlers and assume we can make business savvy leaders out of them??? It's insane.

As much as I hate them, just look at what PSU is doing. They are obviously winning the money game, and it's probably not by luck. They have a system and they're following it. And say what you want, but they created a brand called FUN. That's not easy to do. What have we heard about our financial situation and what's our brand that we're trying to sell to top out-of-State talent: Hunting, fishing, and country music?

This could not be more accurate. there is no doubt the brands work as hard as anyone. but does that translate to success?

Wdm is totally missing the point about the fun "brand" that psu has created. I don't doubt that iowa has fun, just like every other program in the country. however, psu has made it a point to turn fun into a brand. If I had a blue shirt with fun written in white letters, what would you think if you saw me in carver? PSU... that is a brand my friend. they have turned success into a brand.

My thoughts on the brands is that they lack foreward thinking. the following is an excerpt about forward thinking in business.

"In the innovation space, forward thinking is more than a generic phrase: It refers to organizations and the way in which they proactively look toward the future to identify opportunities"

This is where tnt are lacking. wdm has admitted that they have had to change their tactics in many ways while others are forging ahead. I feel iowa will always be a step behind with brands at the helm. fornatately brands hard work keeps them close but never really in contention. Iowa just does not see the opportunities until it is too late.

FWIW, Wdm I always appreciate your thoughts, this is not an attack on you, just a different opinion.

Haha, you got me on that one.
at the end of the day we all just want iowa to win. everything else are just details.

Eustice has a big ego... so tell us again about your daughter playing D1 volleyball and your son choosing between football at Iowa/Oregon or wrestling at Iowa. Also, getting a Christmas card from Terry's family doesn't make you recognized as a fan, it makes your kids high school classmates.

No future in the past my friends. Time to start/keep moving forward like a Brands Brother wrestling.

I laughed at my son when he bet me ISU will get Metcalf. I said he bleeds black and gold, well apparently he bleeds green and I don't blame him...yes I do. Wtf?

Wait, you laughed at your son and lived to tell about it? You sir, are a stud.

Is it too late for me to state that I love Kevin Jackson as a wrestling coach and I feel that he should be able to stay at Iowa St until he gets the train back on the track?

Vall, you're awesome. We Hawk fans need to hire Jackson a lawyer to get his job back. That and some "HWC - I'm Not Impressed" t-shirts and we're there.

This is becoming a large thread and I haven't read it all. The sky isn't necessarily falling with Metcalf. He is just a volunteer right? I know his impact is more than just being on staff because of his name. With that said, now we know he wants to be in college coaching, which isn't a bad thing. He can always volunteer for a year or two and then come back to our room.

Would I rather have him in our room with our guys? Hell yes. Do I think he is better off in our room if he decides to make another run at international? Still hell yes.

Point is, he isn't now a cyclone for life

Zalesky, Zalesky, Dresser, Steiner, Steiner,Zadick, Zadick, Goldman, Ryan, Davis, Ersland, Schwab, Heffernan, Perry, Penrith, Juergens, Metcalf, Ramos, St John, Jeva, Evans and on and on and on and on.

We can't keep all the former wrestlers who want to coach, on staff at Iowa. This has been going on since the beginning of the Gable era and will continue. PSU will start to see this as some of their guys retire from wrestling and look for other opportunities. It comes with having great kids wrestle for successful programs. Teams in need look to tap the skills of the former wrestlers as well as hope to bring in a little piece of what made their former team successful.

I am not in the room so can't say for sure how much impact Zadick and Metcalf had during their time as coaches / mentors, but I know we haven't won a title since Metcalf stepped off the mat, and our recruiting has been well behind what PSU has been doing for many years now. And as "fun" is the new thing, if Metcalf pinned Hulk Hogan for the WWF title at Wrestlemania, he still wouldn't crack a smile, so there's that.

Nothing against either of these guys, great Hawkeyes, great men and and proud to have had them wrestle full time at CHA, but they move on, they will grow and become better and maybe someday we get them back, maybe not, but ultimately we can't keep everyone in house, nor should we want to. I want former hawks to have major success in everything they do, it's up to TNT to make sure we stay one step ahead, something I am sure is always on their mind.

All I was trying to say is I wish I had more money to donate to the club. I explained why and thats a sin. By the way my kids dont go to the same school as Brands family. Everytime I see Bonnie and or Michelle I get hugs and they always ask about how my family is doing. Guess thats no big deal either.

I have known Ryan for a VERY long time and you have no idea how much time, energy and money he puts in to get kids to come here. You can thank him for Kemerer, Marinelli and Young. There is more to recruiting to just a name. Ask Perry how that is working for him.

TnT are the main reason we got Lee.

Psu is getting kids based on them being hot right now and the money available to them.

By the way she wants to play Softball not volleyball.

It's going to be ok fellas. There is always a back story and If Brands and Barta really wanted Metcalf to be a major part of the program, he would already have been on the Iowa staff.

Looks like the new staff at ISU is already paying off. They just got a commitment from an Iowa highschool state runner up.

You guys are basing the future of your entire program around a state runner up......Imatation is a form of flattery I guess.

It is great all those former Hawks get to come back to the state and can coach. Losing Metcalf was inevitable due to the overlap in his weight range with the current staff. Let him go out and prove himself, the door will always be open. Hawks need someone for the 165-184 range. Dake, Taylor, or even Jordan Leen would be good gets. http://www.virginiasports.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/jordan_leen_800147.html

Did that Cyclown douche actually say that about Spencer Lee? Wow. I am going to get out all this discussion since I heard that on CF they are mocking how "scared" we are of the hires and thus have all these threads. Bottom line is very simple. They are, always have been, and always will be the jealous little brother. They are a little bitch to Iowa and always will be. It is such a loser pathetic fanbase that they post more on Iowa then their own f-in school.

Cyk, it's cool with me if you post here. HR is a place for all wrestling fans to contribute, so I welcome it. Plus, I don't think these ignorant posters like AZ(explitive) realize that ISU does not yet have a message board, the old one was closed down due to lack of interest and Dresser is fundraising to finance a new one.

Also, if you provide your address I can mail you a copy of the PSU guide to wrestling "The Complete History of Wrestling Since It's Inception - 2011 to present", and a copy of the rules and scoring structure, a lot has changed since 1987, the year ISU last won a title (or maybe that's a dual meet), little things like, the Berlin Wall came down and there was a change in the way near fall points are awarded.

Welcome to the cesspool. Word of caution tho, looking like you may be in over your head. :p

That's true, but I can't help it, I write for OUR entertainment, not his. We all can agree how advanced most of us HR peeps are, we can't be slowed down by the dull in this world.

Seriously, and for the record, good for ISU, they deserve more success than their administration has provided up to this point. Two of the best wrestlers and coaches of all time wrestled in Ames. If this was my team I would be very happy today. I'm not so I'm not, but that's my problem. I look forward to hating them once again in something other that basketball instead of pitying them, no one with "Iowa" in their name should ever be pitied.

he ain't new just some clown on 4th or 5th username spewing same old gibberish.

Iowa is 57-7-1 all-time vs. Iowa State. Just going to put that right here...

They can hire all the former Hawkeyes they want, they will never touch us. With that being said, I'm disappointed Metcalf has gone to Ames.

You would think DSJ would be the quiet one, but at their duals he was the most vocal coach. Dresser just watches and I'm sure does his strategery. Zad sucked with my signing my orange and DSJ just laughed and wouldn't touch it, but Kevin was f**. I really thought DSJ didn't want to burn a bridge, but Zad had a flamethrower ready.
